SHAPE of TOMORROW The FUTURE is the big thing at Clairton High School, YVe try to emphasize it in everything we do. just look around-at our language labora- tory: at our curriculum being rcfdesigned to bring developments for the future closer to the presentg even at our inodernistit' Christmas mobiles-and you will agree that we concentrate on bringing the predictable world of toniorrow into the present. The MYSTERY of the future, the tomorrow we don't know, is symbolized in this book by the many photographs you'll find in every Inis-shape of the ordered and regular rectangle. As the class of 1960 graduates into the new decade, we look to it to play its part in removing the distortions. The brick house on its south was moving to its north, and nobody wanted to miss this once- in-a-life-time spectacular. ,xl -Z li , I A ff, With Sam Lauderbaugh at the controls and Paul Weintraub checking, the new electronic language laboratory goes into operation. The first of its kind in Westem Pennsylvania, this Instructomatic equipment was ready for use January 26. Helping in this test run are language students Cbackb Carole Arch, Ila Marie Polutnikg Cfrontj Ronald Kunz, Nancy Orsini, and John Gongas. What do you consider our 111ost IIlCIl1Of2IlJlC event in 1959- l960? Was it the coming of Dr. Helen B. Knipp to be Director of Curriculum? Was it the continuation ol' accelerzltetl control groups emphasizing such things as only literary topics for long themes and second semester trig? XVas it the installation of the language lab with its opportunities for linguists to express and hear themselves on tape? Because it is a difficult task to regulate and finance the affairs of a school as large as ours, members of the board must of necessity possess a sincere interest in school problems and must be willing to devote their time unsparingly to finding solutions modern but practical. Such characteristics are pos- sessed to the very fullest exent by each of the Clairton directors. As part of their program to improve the local school system by expanding the curriculum, they have emphasized this year reading therapy, science, mathematics, and languages. The installation of the language laboratory, the extension of trigono- metry to a full year course, and the addition of new biology equipment are but outward signs of this program, of which the true value to students is immeasurable. Through the conscientious work of the Board, CHS has become a school that not only keeps abreast but expects to be out in front. Vice-President Hugh F. Mullen President Leonard C. Lehman r V K f ,. Knapp B.A. 1vr.A. Ph.D. Director Of CUfflCUlUm University of Pittsburgh A significant administration move in 1959 was securing the services of Dr. Helen Bachman Knipp, formerly of the University of Pittsburgh and the Read- ef's Digest staff. As Director of Curriculum and assist- ant to Dr. Bohren, this specialist in reading psychology, in the administration of placement tests, and in the teaching of foreign languages has set in motion many projects which will have long range effects on what is taught in the Clairton Schools. Besides helping many students with personal reading problems, she instituted in the first grades a radically different method of teach- ing reading which is reported to be having amazing results. EW TWISTS in the Language Department Greetings in four languages to the electronic language laboratory with its dials, pushbuttons, and earphones! The purpose of this new equip- ment is to aid the student in speaking the language he studies and in understanding the spoken word. Its installation was made possible by the National Defense Act which provides that the government pay half the cost of im- provements for teaching languages. Beginning in January, students listened to recorded voices of native speakers, recorded their own voices, heard them played back, and had their pronun- ciation errors pointed out. Teachers had to master the operation of the intricate control panels and spend much time making their own tapes since not enough commercial material is yet available. They felt like true pioneers. Social Studies ----- thc PRESE through thc PA T To be well acquainted with the past is to be well prepared for the future. CHS Social Studies students hrst explore the history of the world. Then they study the place of America in that history, the way the laws and institutions they know as American came to be, and the methods for meeting problems which face young citizens in a challenged democracy. Through weekly study of a current events magazine, they keep well in- formed about persons and places in today's news. isa PRIME FACTOR In this age of space and speed, the always-important un- known X has become all-important. At the top, Richard Smith and Ed Taylor are bound for the national Future Engineer competition. The buses are leaving for a tour of Westinghouse Research, Churchill. At the left is Lynn Crawford, who placed first at CHS in the National Math Assocation contest. Her father, Mr. Donald C. Crawford, on Saturdays often drove Lynn, Paul Voelkel, Rosalyn Williams, and Larry Grimenstein to the Westinghouse Laboratories Science Honors Lectures. 1961 A , O O CLASS OFFICERS: President t Frank Billy, treasurer Sylvester Ama- tangelo, secretary Sue Ross, vice- president Bob Carleton. . I l There are those who pity us Juniors. They say we occupy an awkward position because we are above the inexperience of sophomores and below the prestige of seniors. Want to know something? We are not awk- ward and we are not in the least dissatisfied. We like having Jim Lewisg we are happy the seniors like having Jim Kelly. Are we looking forward to our senior year? Well, yes, but we haven't spent our junior year brooding about. it. We managed the prom, at least twenty of us helped with the yearbook, ten or more of us with the newspaper. Our athletes and cheerleaders certainly helped win those games. OUR Charlene Bowers drum- majored the band. OUR Kathleen Hrabosky S managed assemblies. And our Tech boys Wouldn't change this year for any other. Pity us? Why, we've had nothing but a ball! Fresh? Cookies for the evening's dance are sampled by junior refreshment f W committee members Frank Billy, Paulette Williams, Rita Martin, Ken , f Bolton, and Dave Harbst. Representing the Bears at the coin tossing for finale with the Dukes are Allen Lancaster, john Paoletti, and Alex Ross. Bears' third perfect show rained out CHS football, 1959, was a good show. It featured a bulky, fierce line and a flashy backfield. It had Coach Neil Brown sweating over the dusty gridiron hoping for organization. Its curtain call revealed an enviable 9-1 record. In the curtain raiser with Peabody, a hearty half- time pep talk was necessary to convince the scoreless Bears that they did not want an extra, hard, Saturday rehearsal. Three quick touchdowns and a whitewash was their answer. Glassport's Gladiators, having defeated McKees- port, showed up ready for battle a week later. When the smoke had cleared, the arena scoreboard read 26-0 in Clairton's favor. Long, brilliant runs and short worth- while ones the next Friday night at home added up to 20-7 league win over Monongahela. The Bears' defense mortar gave way a little, allowing the first opposing points. With Paoletti's aerials to ALL-WPIAL Jim Kelly sparking an offense that also featured Perkins, Brown, Lancaster, and Glover, the coaching staff turned its attention to defensive strategy. After a week's work, the Bruins' wall held firmly against their hosts, the Donora Dragons, who remained scoreless against Clair- ton's 21 points. Then, in one of the finest defensive games ever, the Bears fought back from a six-point first quarter deficit to a 7-6 victory over the previously unbeaten, untied Munhall Indians. The Bears executed a repeat squeak at Monessen as the big toe of tackle Ron Richnafsky sailed the victory-boat in another 7-6 contest. The record stood at six wins, no losses. The show's one dark moment came in the seventh act. In a miserable, steady downpour, Clairton suffered its first regular season defeat since 1956 at the hands of the WPIAL champs-to-be. The Charleroi Cougars first scored a field goal, but the key play was the fake kick that proved to be a TD pass to Strelich, Cougar back. For the only Bear tally, Jim Kelly picked up a loose ball and went the distance. Final score: Charleroi 9, Clairton 6. Erased from AA competition, the Bears wreaked havoc on their last three opponents. Starting with a 28-6 win over the Brownsville Brashear eleven, they continued the newborn streak by bouncing Connells- ville 27-0, and Duquesne, 34-7. Senior Bill Bennett provided a dramatic finale-a 75-yard punt return, with one shoe off and one shoe on. 'F , 1 H Incxpcricncc puts brakes on record in CROSS COU TRY Although the 1959 cross country record of 0-7 indicates a dismal season, the boys showed a lot of heart on the cinder track. Mr. Nick Soich in his first year as head coach had an inexperienced squad that gave all they had, but it wasn't enough. The boys dropped a heartbreaker to Wil- kinsburg 27-28, and then never performed as well again. Senior letterman Alf Spangler paced the harriers, but more help was needed. Other losses came at the hands of Baldwin, Fort Cherry, Uniontown, Penn, Connellsville, and South Hills Catholic. Coach Soich looks forward to rebuilding next year. Heading the list of returnees will be junior lettermen Gary Parnham and Joe Booker. Other veterans will be Bob Buell, jack Miller, Tony Ragone, William Patrick, Ray Lancianese, David Demchak, and Bill Alderson. Graduating lettermen are Alf Spangler, Larry Grimenstein, Robert Orsini, Dennis Nagy, joe Lovrencevic, Alex Harper, and Robert Earl Williams. Lose two heartbreakers Journeying up a narrow path, led by Coach Stan Berkman, the 1960 cager squad hoped to better their '59 total of two wins. A hard-fought 50 per cient-plus record shone through at the finish, 12 wins against 10 losses. Nourished on a strict diet of sweat and grind. the Bears whizzed through the exhibition games, but came to an abrupt halt upon encountering Section Six. Losing the season opener to North Catholic by 26 points, the veteran varsity brought rampage to the next four opponents. After nipping Monessen by one point, the league inaugural at the jinxed McKeesport Vocational floor was the first of three successive losses, a bad start. At this point the Bears donned their new uniforms and responded by shellacking Elizabeth-For- ward 71-47, setting the season high. Then Baldwin and Munhall were added to the win column. Returning from a one-game break in section play, Coach Berkmanis boys endeavored to start the second half on the right foot, but had their hopes smeared in two of the most exciting games witnessed in a long time by CHS fans. Both thrillers were lost by a single point, 62-61 to McKeesport, and 64-53 to Duquesne, the '60 Section winners. These heart-breakers paved the way for the fiogging by state champion Farrell and a defeat by Homestead. Tire Bears won the last three, finishing 6-6 in league play. In his nine years at Clairton, Coach Berkman has experienced mostly average seasons. He has high hopes, however, for the tenth, centered in such terrific prospects as sophomore Stewart johnson and junior Jim Kovalyak, both over 6'4 , and playmakers Tom Berich, Robert Everson, and Dom DiMattia. On the Baldwin field Clairton's fast baller Al Brown allowed only one hit and that to the Highlanders' first batter, but Bear hitters were unable to save the game for Al and lost 1-0. For 1960, Coach Matich had to replace only two regulars. To take over for Fred Lewis at first base, either Dan Jacobs or Rex Linn would be available. Hill and Mr. Samuel K. Jacobs as members of the Board, developed a system of operation to accomplish more with less trouble. Council members were divided into standing com- mittees for cafeteria, sanitation, social affairs, hall hosts, and United Fund. The cafeteria committee aided faculty supervisors Mrs. Grace Lacey, Miss Frances Ortner, Mr. Andrew Huzinec, and Mr. Stan Berkman in a campaign which resulted in a cleaner, more pleasant eating place for all lunch periods. The social committee took charge of decorations and entertainment for school dances. The United Fund Drive, for a second year, was successful under Student Council's promotion. A welcome revival was having definite school time, the first and third Tuesdays, Period One, for Council meetings. A face lifting for our favorite newspaper September 25, 1959, and the Clairtonian News had a new look! A change from letterpress to offset printing enabled co-editors Annette Cowan and joan Cutuly to use more pictures and drawings without extra expense. A second change, from newsprint to white heavier paper, improved the general appearance and photograph re- production. The adviser was also new: Miss Mary Lou Kruppa took over when Mrs. Jean Cowan moved to the Math Department. Most memorable of all their activities was their thrilling presentation of Luenna E. McMahon's three- act courtroom drama, The People versus Maxine Lowe. To celebrate most properly Guests of Honor had to be SAI T NICK and SAI T ALE TI E Fantasyland, CHS! The 1959 Snow Ball turned out to be just that. Two huge Christmasy, frosty snow men welcomed dancers to the stage where blue lights, tinsel, and a lighted star made them feel Christmas had arrived. junior Ed Blank also made sure St. Nick ar- rived a few days early, and like that jolly old elf, dis- tributed candy to the evening's revelers. Even though St. Valentine brought the year's worst blizzard, at the Hearts Capade February 20, sixty-nine couples, ignoring the weather, floated about on lace- and-crepe paper clouds to music by Wesley Ward's Quartet. The evening's big event was the crowning of Jim Kelly and Pat Donahue as King and Queen of Hearts. They had been named in a Clairtonian News- sponsored election, girls voting for king: boys, for queen. Annette Cowan and Alf Spangler of the News Staff ofliciated at the crowning. Making up a court for the royal pair were the other candidates: Vicki Billy, Janet Buck, Pat Cola, Merry Jo Gilmore, Stephanie Grunsky, Betsy Norrisg Lenny Baughman, Bill Bennett, Frank Guenther, Don Salvino, Jim Schultz, and Charles Simon. TOP: jack Pierosh samples Santa's bag of goodies. His date is Claire Traeger, other dancers, Mike DiCarlo and Carol Dreschler. CENTER: Happy Santa CEddie Blankj to have pretty sophomore Carol Tomich telling him what she wants for Christmas. RIGHT: The Snow Ball-DeCem- ber 17, 1959.
