' I ' My name is Walter Winchbug. I am the author of this exciting novel, which underneath is really the story of what went on in Cloirton High School dur- ing the year 1957-1958. In doing research for the book, I lived at the school. I ate the food, risked my life in the halls, and even fdevoted, am l not?l did the work of a senior. The incoming sophomores made the first real im- pression on me. Those poor lost sheep! ln thev came through the wide doors, smiles on their faces and people. ioyous expectations in their hearts, thrilled at the prospect of finally being members of a senior high school and of meeting at least a thousand new How did they like it? It was more than thev ever could have suspected. They were thoroughlv deaf- ened by the bells and quite bewildered bv the lei- surely attitude of their iunior and senior frienki toward three-minute warnings. They rushed madlf while others lolled. They were comoletelv confused by the clear directions of kind upperclassmen like Richard Herbert and Craig Caldwell. But eventually they did catch on and the glazed look left their eyes. I even got to like them. You, dear reader, can make vour own decision. Here's the whole lost, lonely, slightly lazy, but likeable lot of them .......... While researching this novel, I dug up some facts that I think need to be presented. I discovered thot work for the good of the school starts before school work starts! By the students, I mean. Not all of those iuniors and seniors who reported back with the new sophs had spent the summer relaxing or picking up pay envelopes. Quite a few of them had labored many days for the good of their school. What these summer workers accomplished must be recognized as an important part of my story of the year. 1: .. hiv., 0 J ' 4. Y af we ' .S .., , 'L -42 ,,. tt QM. ,, as Work, work, and slave--those were the orders from director Ben E. Benack to the marching band during the hot months. With Dave Matz, tall-hatted and fancy-coated, swinging cn potent baton, and Wesley Ward doing special tooting tutoring, and Richard Ryan of Carnegie Tech assisting on drums- the mercury really sizzled with a fryin' type big combo. The only relief from the heat--well, air- conditioning, compliments of assistant director Richard Bertini's cool, cool arrangements. cf -f W .. ,ff 'm,y'2,2Jln1t9.vttt5ttf.P1KmJ.I'M' 7 6 AYM I it 'i il gf K Summertime and the livin' is easy? He does have one distinction, though-he's been in more activities than any other senior, even Emily. Of course, this is the result of his having been kicked out of almost every- thing at least once. Emily, along with her devoted group of cheer- leaders under the direction of Miss Barbara Ceryak, the marching band and the Honeybears, Benny's Saints , the Tech signs, and the cheering hordes of students and townspeople were the inspirational forces behind the 1957 football team-a team which rose to glorious heights, including the Steel Valley Championship, before being toppled from the high- est pinnacle on November 30 by Wilkinsburg High School. The Bears rolled over ten straight regular season opponents in crushing fashion to earn their bid to the big AA playoff game in the Pi1tStadium. This was a truly great Clairton team-a team that deserved everything it got, and perhaps de- served the championship, too. The squad faced one of the toughest schedules in WPIAL AA , but with a ground attack that was ultra-powerful and another dangerous weapon that wasn't even thought to be there at the season's start-a passing attack-the Bears completely demolished nine opponents in a row, and for the tenth, all-important Duquesne, pre- sented a stonewall defense that finally won them the game and the Steel Valley title. ,V on ill' 1 QC i 5 i I Pitt Stadium November 30 1957 SCOREBOARD CHS Opp. PEABODY at CLAIRTON 31 0 GLASSPORT at CLAIRTON 38 12 MONONGAHELA at CLAIRTON 38 6 CENTRAL CATHOLIC at CLAIRTON 33 12 MUNHALL at CLAIRTON 31 13 CLAIRTON at AMBRIDGE 44 19 CHARLEROI at CLAIRTON 26 0 CLAIRTON at TURTLE CREEK 21 3 CLAIRTON at CONNELLSVILLE 25 0 CLAIRTON at DUQUESNE 13 7 PLAYOFF GAME Clairton 0 Wilkinsburg 13 but lose AA in snow Coach Neil Brown and his staff started at summer camp with an experienced backfield and an uncoor- dinated line. Leroy Loudermilk and Co. from Wilkins- burg, a little smarter and better on that snowy November 30 in the Stadium, took the crown. I went to the game, and l wasn't sorry, even though the Winchbugs from way back have always detested cold weather. He knew that there weren't hours enough in the day for such a schedule, but never a quitter, he still inquired about the possibility at the office. The answer was a quiet Sorry, followed by a flat No. But still he turned out themes like ci printing press. llt was rumored he could have made a for- tune when Handicap themes were due.J He built full scale models of London and Stratford, two of the great seats of English literature, I have learned. After this preliminary practice, George forged ahead to legendary heights-he built Rome in a day. Still without hope of realizing his dream, he kept on writing, and building, and mostly reading. George would have delighted in any of these English classes. Opposite page: Above, Miss Kruppa and sophomore escape literature. Center, Miss Wilson and vocabulary building. The walk to the bus involves George with several book-obstructed ditches, once on board, though bruised, he again becomes lost in his read- ing. Here it gave the kids a little time to smile after the epidemic and between the arguments. A fine time it was, too, with Emily helping to paint toys for the sick children, George singing cherubically in the chorus, and even Butch, dressed up as the third Wise Man, behaving wisely. Then came the long vacation. The charm of the Nativity came to life once again, shepherds and Wise Men- and angels, too-worship the Babe, and the strains of Christmas music fill the air. 1 W s l x 5 , i . l Q . Coach Stan Berkman, who built a really great team this year, tells one of his good stories to the referees and the Penn Town- ship coach. VARSITY BASKETBALL SQUAD-STANDING: Steve NGQY, Tom Glover, Howdy Miller, Judge Dickson, Allan Jarrett, Jim Trent, Robinson, Ken Gadson, Jim Beam, Don Thomas, Ray Glover, Len 9' Greatest C S cage squad What a year for sports thrills this 1958-1959 has been at CHS! I couldn't have ordered a bet- ter one. Now take these cagers, for instance. This was to have been the year Coach Stan Berkman's Bears were to dethrone McKeesport-and the great- est basketball team irt Clairton history almost did, but just missed in an 88-82 thriller on the Clairton floor. So the Tigers took another section crown, and Clairton finished a close second. This senior- studded team, one of the most powerfully offensive clubs in the WPIAL, set 10 new all-time records in a 17-6 season and a fine 10-2 mark in tough Sec- tion Six. And the squad provided thrills through- out the season, but especially so at the end. , , A Meade, Cliff Livingston, John Bob Hecht. SEATED: Hercules :g yi 1 - H ,VN 56 nosed out In Section Six by Tigers Ken Gadson and Howdy Miller led the way, with some fine help from Allan Jarrett, Judge Dick- son, Jim Beam, Bob Hecht, and Lenny Kees. Clair- ton twice set new game scoring marks C90, then 931 and scored the most points any CHS five ever tal- lied against McKeesport 1821. They participated in two games that set total point records U70 with McKeesport and 171 with Glassport1, and scored more points over the season than any other Clair- ton team. They saw Howdy Miller set an individual scoring mark at Homestead C361, and Gadson set a season scoring record with 437 points in 23 games. Believe me, as a kind of third-rate manager help- ing to keep the scorebook, I needed an adding ma- chine for such big numbers. The incomparable Kenny Gadson drives down the lane for two in the league opener at Clairton. SCOREBOARD CHS OPP. From the first, the team displayed a great deal of drive and hustle with some fine sharpshooting to boot. It was a picture team-two fine rebounders and inside men in Jim Kelly and Joe Ancrile, and three outside playmakers, drivers, and shooters in Bob Lehman, John Paoletti, and Frank Johnson or Len- ny Baughman. Jim Kelly led the rebounders and the scorers with 283 points, he was followed by John Paoletti with 172, and Joe Ancrile with 164. JV Lenny Baughman tries his two-hand iump shot. COACH DAN HM JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL SQUAD-STANDING: Jam Mcoogney, Joe Ancrile, Jam George, Jim Kelly, Carl Abrasheff, Barry Barkman, Bob Lehman, Franklin George. KNEELING: Anthony Canterna, John Paoletti, Bill Bennett, Don Salvina, Frank Johnson, Lenny Baughman. The Fabulous Gaclson This is Ken Gadson and his famous iump shot -Gadson, the slender 5'l l dead-eye shooter, who led the Bears in scoring for the second consecutive year, finished runner-up in Section Six scoring with 249 points in l2 league games, and set a new single season scoring record for Clairton by notching 437 markers over the campaign. He was the boy every opponent tried to stop, and none, with the possible exception of Ford City and McKeesport once, succeeded. Blessed with a fantastically accurate jump shot and possessing good driving layup skill along with great ball-hawking, playmaking, and hustling abil- ities, he far and away earns the title of Player of the Year and should make his way to the big leagues without any delays. As Judge Dickson goes in for a driving shot, he is sandwiched by Munhall's Brown H53 and Knight 1207, but Al Jarrett is there if he should miss. KENNETH GADSON Penn's Billy Burkett did not succeed in blocking this shot by Bob Hecht, so Al Jarrett and Jim Beam did not have to rebound. .S SENIOR LETTERMEN In addition to Kenny Gadson, these six senior letter-winners were responsible for Clairton's great season. Next year Coaches Berkman and Hill will add the cream of the JV crop to an imposing list of juniors headed by 6'3 John Glover and sharp- shooting playmaker Don Thomas. Tom Meade, Steve Nagy, Skip Livingston, and Hercules Robinson, along with some of the promis- ing sophs-Jim Kelly, Bob Lehman, Joe Ancrile, and John Paoletti-will be on the court next year. Big Allan was a consistent rebound- . er and often a scoring asset. His sea- 1 son total showed 75 points, an aver- 1 age of 3.3 per game. Howdy Miller, one of the fastest im- proving players I've ever coached, according to Stan Berkman, led the Bears in rebounding and finished sec- cond in scoring, hitting for 302 points, a l3.'l average. Jim Beam, sharing the playmaking chores, hit some valuable scoring sprees to wind up with L32 points and a 5.8 average. ALLAN JARRETT JIM BEAM X HOWARD MILLER QXS1 ..., Q Q 1 X . ff' -1 ,tn -.,..,,.. -X 1 --.i..,3K Judge Dickson took a while to find his basketball eye after football, but in the big McKeesport game hit for 17 points, finished with 194, and had an 8.4 average, Big Bob Hecht, though seldom a starter, played often enough to score 154 points for a 6.5 average. He was fine on rebounds, but often had trouble with shots rolling off the rim. Lenny Kees, in and out of the start- ing lineup, was the team hustler and spirit builder-it wasn't really a game unless Lenny was on the floor at least once, He scored 124 points for a 5.4 average. You ob- iected to the fact that money was being spent for improvements in a department you disliked, so you blasted it apart. But that's not quite the way we solve problems here. We discuss. We listen. We even ask parents to come in and see the school and talk over diffi- culties. We send students to religious education classes, too, to learn about tolerance and sharing and peaceful ways of settling differences. This was not so irrevelant as it may seem, besides being another example of democracy at work in the school, this was the group, Mr. Bracken pointed out, which would pass judgment on Butch. DG .4s,. 1 1 U Butch s lost claws in f The Council's first reaction was to get Butch out of CHS, but Emily intervened with an eloquent plea for leniency. Finally, Butch's schoolmates softened, and a proposal enabling him to prove his good inten- tions, if any, was forwarded to the proper authori- ties: We, representatives of the student body of Clairton High School, do pass this iudgment on senior class member Bentley Yellowjackson: Providing that agreements as to Bugmanitar- ian practices shall be duly made, the new sci- ence laboratories should be built. ln punish- ment for his monumentally stupid bombing, the accused shall spend a maior portion of every day working on the construction of the new rooms. Butch's lost cause Butch- GGnuGH! This is a moderate expression of Butch's true feel- ings on his sentence. Chinese water torture or the Iron Maiden would have been more pleasant to him than this. He was doomed to spend the next months slaving away on a proiect he had made Herculean efforts to prevent. Grind. Sweat. He might as well have been forced to dig his own grave, but work he did. Con- sidering the lack of quality control where his efforts were concerned, in an unusually short time the new chemistry and physics laboratories were completed. I present my own photographs here for your inspec- tion. 74 'Url NY' e....l -me Problems of democracy lust naturally relate themselves to current events. Mrs. Lacey guides this discussion group. It's history Mr. Bracken's distasteful task was now done. The Student Council's distasteful task was likewise com- pleted. And Butch's distasteful task had been done also - the labs were ready for inspection. As the last flecks of dust slowly settled to earth, relative peace pervaded the school, and within a few months the sordid events of the past weeks would be studied in classes such as these. BRACKEN Flight to Forgetlulness While Butch tried to learn self-discipline, George had found an interesting occupation. He had ar- ranged tor a special language course which would enable him to study Latin, French, and Spanish at the same time. This may seem an unusual pastime for one whose love had always lain in English liter- ature, but when asked for an explanation, he re' plied that he was trying to forget how to say I love you to Emily in as many languages as possif ble. Alas, tragedy stalks George again, in another year he could have added German and Russian. 4 J' ABOVE: Senior Mike Datch and iun- iors Carolyn Yacamelli and Don Thomas with Miss Will read about and examine a map of the legendary site from whence the Latin language sprang. Although oniy a third of the year was left, it was felt that Tech training could still help Butch when he went job-hunting in the near future. From the start, though, this proved to be a fruitless ven- ture, for Butch was still too much of a roughneck for the Tech boys. JUST BELOW: Mr. Arnett discusses a problem with Machine Shop member Ray Dropulich, who can be sure he'll receive valuable aid here. BOTTOM: After Mr. Schreck, new department head, explains how to prove the diagonals of an isosceles trapezoid equal, Tech boys wonder why it seemed so dilticult. or perhaps vice versa Butch's shop career was a dreary business. While the other boys were singing and whistling at their machines, Butch shifted from one foot to the other and grumbled. His rapid failure as a vocational student was the beginning of a sharp decline in his new life. Soon he grew even more weary ot the surveillance of Emilyg and, reverting to character, he rebelled. Lewis coached his first CHS swim team in 1946. That first year he won the WPIAL title, and in each succeeding year has brought home another trophy for the front hall cases, II in all. This year, the twelfth, his Bearacudas did not win the league crown-that honor went'to Mt. Lebanon. The query, When will it end? had been answered. Through Il winning years, the Clairton team had displayed the best qualities of sportsmanship in hard, clean combat. But that was not too difficult. This year, though, in losing the title, they displayed the same qualities. They won like champions, so, too, did they lose like champions. A salute to the 1958 Bearacudas. I, Walter Winchbug predict, that from the ashes of this lone defeat will rise the Phoenix of many more titles for CHS swimming teams. But in answer to the first call for baseball candidates, 70 boys reported. Obviously, even one win would constitute an im- provement, and Matich announced a well-defined building system for CHS baseball. lt was to be based on the proposition that no seniors would sit on the bench, they'll either be on the field or not on the team. But when Emily was given a hotfoot while singing Cool Water with the sixth period chorus, and when accompanist Sandy MacClaren showed Miss Botdorf the three white mice in the piano, it was generally agreed that something had to be done. Oddly enough, the incidents in the vocal music department seemed to center around Emily, or those near the vivacious little bug, and Miss Botdorf, who was very eager to keep the peace, became a little wary of her fine soprano. On three successive days during rehearsal of the Easter Cantata, a stunned Mixed Chorus was drowned out by loud strains of rock 'n roll from undiscoverable origins. But on the third day, the ever-alert Miss Botdorf caught sight of a striped shirt fleeing around the corner, and things were very plain. In 1955 he won the coveted WPIAL track crown and has had his teams up near the top ever since. He is regarded as one of the district's top track mentors. Up and over goes John Hrezo, a specialist in the field events. is .9 1' 21 sf ,,,'- Coach John Soich and the CHS track team began practice in February for what promised to be ano- ther fine season for Clairton, always one of the district's top track and field contenders. On those snowy zero afternoons when they had to pound it out indoors, a bug's life was not worth much in those lower halls. The cross country record had been fairly en- couraging, and Mr. Soich was welcoming a small nucleus of Iettermen from last year's squad. He was faced, however, with the problem of replacing many high-scoring graduates. Senior Fred Hart, counted on for heavy-duty action in the distance events. Taj! for Mounties' title Some of the returnees were Jerry Smoyer, Roy Hamlin, Fred Hart, Bill Hartill, Judge Dickson, Paul Hrezo, Sam Glover, Jay Huffman, Gary Kaltenbach, Paul Wilkop, and Nelson Young. The first four would be ones who would give Clairton high rankings in the dashes and relays, es- pecially the speedy Smoyer. Dickson and Glover would probably maintain or even improve their fine 1956 high iump records. It remained for Coach Soich to mold these boys and those he would find to fill the vacant spots into a team strong enough to challenge Donley Mol- lenauer's Mt. Lebanon champions. wxu,m , , 21 Senior Jerry Smoyer, one of the fastest men on the squad, relied upon for the sprints and the relays. 1 f 4 L jug 1 ew, n- .,,.., ,Ma wi: -Ie: 'fl'-wut , if 'H A ' .wwffg I 'M ,I .fx .. -T,,CA,.2-gg, V? f J y X 'WO-fy' ' f, , ,z,ff6w.'?X4'1. The two are together at last. The prom, at a country club for the first time in CHS history, finally gave them a taste of the way George had known their life could be. They had a ball, got home early in the morning, and were about to live happily ever after. There remained only two things to be dealt with: gradua- tion, and the Butch matter. The large crowd at the elaborately and expensively staged after-prom party proves its popularity with CHS prom-goers. The year, up to prom time, produced a number of social events, most notable of which was the Heart Hop. RlGHT: The highlight of that evening was the crowning of Jay Hultman and Carmee lacovini as the King and Queen of Hearts. Lillian Leis, his date, performs the honor for .lay iust after senior president Jack Hipsky had crowned the lovely Carmee. BELOW: A moment during the same evening. Seniors to emerge from C S cocoon Butch remains to be seen Soon it will be that time again, and the boys, girls, and bugs who make up this year's senior class will have their impressive commencement exercises and depart to the four corners of the globe, or of Clairton, or of their own little webs. Just like good bugs, they entered CHS as grubby little sophomores, and the grand old school served as a chrysalis for three years until they are now ready to emerge, completely buggy. Themes, prom hassles, bomb tossings, Macbeth, almost-champion teams, and tests, tests, tests- have made this a hectic but exciting year for Seniors, 'l958. lf only they can figure out again what to do with Butch before graduation, June 4, school officials will insure one of the finest of commencements ever for this fifty-first graduating class. f ,-,Til , 1- -,er ' 14' l' 1 I 259 l l t . f l Q75 k ,kg 1 S zff l gl ff' l it l - f J v+ 1, 'in I SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS: President .lack Hipsky, secre tary Judy Mueller, treasurer Carolyn Hipsky, and vice president Zoise Malush. -1 P' -1'- ' 5-'Jil J A r AP 3 l I l lr l l l r I 1 V SENIOR CLASS SPONSORS: Mr. Mark Tingle and Miss Jane Walker. He served so well as Junior presi- dent that he was re-elected to the iob. While his chief responsibility this year has been managing the affairs of the Senior Class, he has continued his work as a key member of the band and of a popular outside-of-school dance band. He was also an assistant on the yearbook's business staff. Even through the many months he had to work at home, Jack maintained his high scholastic average and was elected to the National Honor Society. He plans to become an engineer. Wo ' 5 llt 010 1 4 x YQ Shi QQ X'-tiff ' J T '39 f4 ' fi' i To JAMES KUPECZ - The talents of quiet and reserved Jim Kupecz have been strongly felt in most of the literary, musical, and dramatic facets of CHS life. His writing abilities have been di- rected at co-editing the newspaper pages for two years and creating all copy for the 1958 Clairton- ian. Among his musical achievements, his part in the operetta, excellent ratings in solo forensics, and his support in the bass section of the Mixed Chorus are notable. His performance in Pride and Prejudice and in this year's poetry reading forensics indicate good dramatic potential. And certainly not least, he is a National Merit Schol- arship finalist. To EMILY BLAZINBUG - One of the most bright- ly shining of all senior personalities, Emily Blaz- ingbug is most worthy of recognition. Her untir- ing efforts have made CHS a more rewarding part of life for every student here. Her activi- ties are far too numerous to mention individ- ually and her accomplishments can be noted in a glowing trail through the pages of this book. ' ' She has shown intelligence, versatility, and a humble willingness to serve. f - , To DOROTHEA TSAGARIS - Few persons have the rare combination of abilities possessed by Dottie Tsagaris, who in addition to her responsi- bilities os news editor of the Clairtonian News finds time to devote to many outside interests. One of these, music, pursued also at school, has led to her the Forensic contests for three years with the Girls Ensemble and also won her a lead- ing part in last year's operetta, One of the top- ranking members of her class, Dottie plans to follow her interest in people by studying psy- chology at Carnegie Tech. Her warmth and quiet helpfulness are two traits that should insure her future as they have aided her past. The two top students, Emily and George, were finally delegated to the task of finding Butch a safe position Csafe for the world, that isj. After weeks of braintwisting George came up with a magnificient idea. The school maintenance men having had years of experience in working with all types of gadgets, George decided to go to 4 them for the help he needed in perfecting his gad- get. The crew which keeps school machin- ery running smoothly: standing, John Laver, head custodian Elmer Cathellp seated, Russell Smith, Wi'liam Demko. Wendy Gifford, Carmee lacovini, Pau- line Everson, Sandy McCormick, and Sheila Marcus dare their opponents to return Pauline's volleyball serve. Soon the first stage of the satellite was ready, but time was running out and the orbital placement stage was for from being completed. What to do was George's plight until Emily made a day-saving suggestion. A recent series of intramural games had singled out the best and strongest of girl basketball- ers. This heroic miss, this Diana, would be the sec- ond stage, would launch Explorer lll and Butch. With a terrific set shot that day of final com- mencement rehearsal, she sent the basketball-sized satellite whirling into orbit - with Butch. Everyone is happily ever after. Eb Z 'Q .
