.. Q9 ll ,AQ N jf Fift Years Ago As the twentieth century began, by way of the river came the heaps of dull red ore and glistening black coal. Then there was great heat. And finally there was cold, hard, indestructible steel, the stuff of the pillars and girders with which the young community was to build its permanent structure. There had been other smaller industries, but they gradually disappeared as Carnegie Steel expanded its holdings along the river. The orange-lighted night sky became every Clairtonian's beauty birthright . . . In the fall of 1904, twelve students gathered for the First session of Clairton High School in a building on Park Avenue. The next year they moved into a fine new building, the present Fifth Street Grade School. Hlhen graduation time came in 1907, only Emma Briner, Rose Colcord, Austin Cort, and Mary Newlin remained to receive the first Clairton High School diplomas, They stepped out into a fast-paced, progressive world. A radical named Henry Ford was claiming men could drive his automobile at the fabulous speed of twenty-five miles an hour and still live. Some innocent youths were being tantalized by shameless lasses who showed the tops ol' their high-button boots, while other blazer- clad high-lifers were playing big-wheel in the shiny new chrome and marble soda shops.
