English and social studies play an im- portant part in our education. An extensive study of literature. both English and Ameri- can. promotes the appreciation of select ma- terial and fine authors. YVith emphasis placed on vocabulary' building. grammar. and cre- ative writing. the English courses prepare the student for a more abundant life as he learns how to better express himself. To express himself. UAX. there's the rub. for who dares forget his Macbeth notebook troubles and senior themes? Iligh school life would not have been half so interesting with- 21 out our dear Shakespeare. whom we all love and want to keep close to our hearts. Adding sparks of fire. and fire indeed. were our traditional Fridax' panel discussions and debates over quite moot subjectsg the ob- ject being to instigate the studentis interest in current affairs. not to settle CIongress's prob- lems for them. l know of no wax' of judging of the future but by the pastf, Social studies outline the history of our government. explain the rights and privileges of each citizen. and teach us the American way' of living in peace with our neighbors.

Student secre- taries are given invaluable experience while working in the offices of CHS, or fulfilling requests from other school departments, Upon realizing how comparatively small the world has grown. one must admit we no longer have far distant neighbors. Nowadays. people who speak a language totally strange to us are doing daily husiness with us. Counnercialists must know and under- stand the language and customs of their fellow husinessmen. The well rounded courses in Spanish and French serve this purpose. Vocahularv and grammar study, along with cultural material that Latin pre- sents. are invaluable to anvone seeking a success in his vocation. Highlighting our exploits through -Iulius Caesaifs Gallic XYars is annual Latin NVeek. in observance of which, the students wear handmade emhlems and. often. take a trip to Buhl Planetarium. At this vearis French breakfast. we were fortunate to have a French mademoi- selle who told us many interesting accounts of her native country.
