S. A. S. : S. A. S. Take notieel matic - Science The mathematics and science depart- ments are two of the most fascinating in Clair- ton High School. It is here that the student learns a difficult chemical formula or discovers the easiest way to find the altitude of a tri- angle. llere the potential engineer, chemist, or physicist is given a firm foundation for the rest of his life. The student is pre- pared to live in a world of peace through sci- ence, but math. the basis of scientific prob- lems must also be mastered. lt also teaches the student to think for himself. The teachers are able to make the student understand every little detail in his course. Mr. Edgar Bleiler and Mr. Harold Wilkinson explain the prin- ciples of biology to the sophomores. If you are puzzled by C12 H22 011, Mr. Kay Chres- tensen of our chemistry department is sure to help you. The brave seniors attempt to learn the rate at which a body falls from the physics instructor, Mr. Larry Critchiield. Mr. Cha es Patton explains the basicitheorems of pane geometry. Miss Jane Walker teaches general mathematics and Miss Agnes Lytle takes care of algebra l and ll. lf you like a few jokes along with your math, you will take algebra II, trig., or solid from Mr. john Soich. Bolt makers Master machinists Uvcational The main objectives of vocational education are to develop such of the basis manipulative and technical skills needed by the student tradesman under existing conditions, to develop desirable trade ideals and attitudes, to develop trade pride and responsibility and to give the learner QCII- eral all around training so he will be able to ob- tain a broad foundation on which to build for advancement in his trade. The objective levels may be stated as the acquisition of information, appreciation. and doing ability. ln the electric department, the boys are fam- iliarized with shop equipment. took their care, use. and maintenance. The principals of motor and generator windings, connection, and uses are taught and instruction is given in simple blue print reading in this shop. The boys are taught the names of the tools, their care, use, and maintenance in the machine shop. They are instructed how to use shop ina- chines. such as lathes, shapers, milling machines. and planers, properly. Also included in this course is simple blue print readings and the proper handling of shop materials. The aim of the auto shop is to teach the boys the basic principles of the automobile. Due to the limited time element, it is better to give the boys these principles, which will make him a better apprentice and more valuable to his CITI- ployer, than to make finished mechanics. This is a deliberate choice of phrase, for a school should he as close to the community and its needs as is the gasoline service station. This service station of education should develop creative arts and aid in the solution of leisure time. Our English courses stress hoth of these developments. More than grammar is stressed in these classes, where students have as a primary purpose appreciation of their own tongue. The study of literature enriches thinking, oral and written composition provide opportunity for self-expression. Our history teachers unfolded historv and showed us how past events influence everv as- pect of our modern life. Prohlems of Democracy proved of particular interest. YVe had often heard of hanking. court trials. and the Presidentls cahinet. Now we know how to preside over a court room, plead a case. and analyze the tense prohlems of strikes, now current throughout our country.
