Realizing this the girls, vocational homemakng department, under the guidance of Miss Olga Coleman, Mrs. Mar- garet Davis, Miss Patricia LeDonne and Miss Sara Seitz, offers an extensive program to meet the complex program of everyday living. After two years in this course the girls are equipped With knowledge and techniques in foods and nutrition, and in the construction of dresses, suits, and coats. Art and science, as applied to home and clothing, are included in this course. In addition to these, the course offers a semester of work in each of the follow- ing subjects:-consumer buying, vocations allied to homemaking, housing and home man- agement, child care and training, home nur- sing and hygiene, family relationships and per- sonal etiquette, and hobbies. Not only will this course enable the girls to become eflicient homemakers, but with a careful selection of subjects from ninth grade on, they will be prepared to enter college or to enter nurses' training. Too many cooks may spoil tht Bolt makers Master machinists Uvcational The main objectives of vocational education are to develop such of the basis manipulative and technical skills needed by the student tradesman under existing conditions, to develop desirable trade ideals and attitudes, to develop trade pride and responsibility and to give the learner QCII- eral all around training so he will be able to ob- tain a broad foundation on which to build for advancement in his trade. The objective levels may be stated as the acquisition of information, appreciation. and doing ability. ln the electric department, the boys are fam- iliarized with shop equipment. took their care, use. and maintenance. The principals of motor and generator windings, connection, and uses are taught and instruction is given in simple blue print reading in this shop. The boys are taught the names of the tools, their care, use, and maintenance in the machine shop. They are instructed how to use shop ina- chines. such as lathes, shapers, milling machines. and planers, properly. Also included in this course is simple blue print readings and the proper handling of shop materials. The aim of the auto shop is to teach the boys the basic principles of the automobile. Due to the limited time element, it is better to give the boys these principles, which will make him a better apprentice and more valuable to his CITI- ployer, than to make finished mechanics. Take notieel matic - Science The mathematics and science depart- ments are two of the most fascinating in Clair- ton High School. It is here that the student learns a difficult chemical formula or discovers the easiest way to find the altitude of a tri- angle. llere the potential engineer, chemist, or physicist is given a firm foundation for the rest of his life. The student is pre- pared to live in a world of peace through sci- ence, but math. the basis of scientific prob- lems must also be mastered. lt also teaches the student to think for himself. The teachers are able to make the student understand every little detail in his course. Mr. Edgar Bleiler and Mr. Harold Wilkinson explain the prin- ciples of biology to the sophomores. If you are puzzled by C12 H22 011, Mr. Kay Chres- tensen of our chemistry department is sure to help you. The brave seniors attempt to learn the rate at which a body falls from the physics instructor, Mr. Larry Critchiield. Mr. Cha es Patton explains the basicitheorems of pane geometry. Miss Jane Walker teaches general mathematics and Miss Agnes Lytle takes care of algebra l and ll. lf you like a few jokes along with your math, you will take algebra II, trig., or solid from Mr. john Soich. We in Clairton High School are fortunate to have such excellent math and science teachers. Cllrestensen Prodigies XVish the bell would ring. Learn your grammar, kiddies. Clairton's Politicians Mrs. Bayles' Angels Collapse of lioman Empire ngli In-Social Studlw A ,, '1 . s. A- ri Our schools should he a Service Station of Education. This is a deliberate choice of phrase, for a school should he as close to the community and its needs as is the gasoline service station. This service station of education should develop creative arts and aid in the solution of leisure time. Our English courses stress hoth of these developments. More than grammar is stressed in these classes, where students have as a primary purpose appreciation of their own tongue. The study of literature enriches thinking, oral and written composition provide opportunity for self-expression. Our history teachers unfolded historv and showed us how past events influence everv as- pect of our modern life. Prohlems of Democracy proved of particular interest. YVe had often heard of hanking. court trials. and the Presidentls cahinet. Now we know how to preside over a court room, plead a case. and analyze the tense prohlems of strikes, now current throughout our country. lfonio vsto' xclo l'au'lvz-xous Ffilllflllhls Commercial Zangu ge Thi- cliclx-click-click of tlim- tyPCXVl'itCI'S in- cn-usc-s stcuclily ns onc npprouc-lics the right re-zu' scction of tlic- tliircl floor. They of course, are somewhat sore from the over-exertion of human croquet, cannon- hall, basketball, and calisthenics-but still they never learn. After getting into the spirit of the sports, many of the boys have the idea to go on with the seasonls sport-whether it be football. bas- ketball, swimming, baseball. or track. The girls are not left out however. Intramural games are played by the girls' choice teams. They compete with one another in volleyball, basketball, and bowling. Only the winners are awarded letters, whereas in boys' sports, the ones with credit for participation will re- ceive an award. Cancer clinic. Set it upl Nice diving board! Heads up. Those students who contin- ually lose or forget their locker keys, or the ones who are ahsent every other day and must get their absentee cards are the favorites of the otlice force. For Seniors the ladies ot the otlice perform many duties such as, making out the class ratings, giving out scholarship information, and sending transcripts of grades to colleges. Ann F errero Graduation is over for the class of 48', but the events and memories of past years lin- ger still in our hearts and minds. We all, at one time or another, have been guilty of wish- ing those all important years away. But dur- ing and after the Commencement exercises we have wished that, in some strange way, we could return and start anew. Even when we received our diplomas, we could not make ourselves believe that we had to leave those many happy hours behind and keep only the memories. As these memories pass in review we can- not help but think of the many exciting min- utes spent in watching our football and bas- ketball teams in action, our swimming team- the pride of our class which won their second W. P. I. A. L. Championship, the Prom with its gala dressings, lovely gowns and sharply creased suits, the importance of escorting that favorite girl, also the many tests we worried and fretted over until pastmidngiht, our first taste of government in student council with its many discussions on student problems. The final parting of friends-both teach- ers and students, which we have made down through the years-has come. We must leave this castle of guidance and go out on our own. Let us use the knowledge given to us to attain the goal set before us. Senivm O C C Alexander, Frances - Academic, Allen, Donald C.-Vocational. Allan Phillips Vice-President .,..i . Ceorge Pascoe Secretary ,. . ., Alice Ellis Treasurer , . Ioan Capul Ioan Capul NVe are the forty-niners--President, Allan Phillips, Vice-president, George Pas- coe, Secretary, Alice Ellis, and Treasurer, Ioan Capul. Like the forty-niners of a hundred years ago we have uncovered gold. Our gold dust was the proceeds from selling Christmas decorations, stationery, and mag- azine subscriptions. We sponsored several Antrim programs and movies which added to our pilc of gold. We also had a hand in the big social successes of the year. The first big success was the hilarious Sadie Hawkinsv party where everyone tried to look his worst-and succeeded. Then came the Christmas Dance and the Hobo Party. The Easter play, The Three Sonsf, was presented by the Iunior Dramatic Club. The play was a novel, beautiful and inspir- ing pageant ably portrayed and directed. The crowning event was the Spring Prom. This year starry eyed lads and las- sies danced slowly in a jungle atmosphere to the dreamy music of the Maestro Tommy Carlyn. This Junior Formal will never be forgotten. We, the class of 1949, want our class to be the best, our school to be the best, and our peace to be the best. We pray that those youths who danced under the soft lights at the Prom, will never be compelled to exchange their colorfully garbed partners for the shining steel of weapons of war. uAt Ylainlz- - - One more ear ROYV I-Alll-rio, cjilflllvlill lluclclvll XViuuim': Cross, Nlarvilwg Culv, l'cg1g.1y Auug Drnlic, Dulmlizlg Cyplwr, .luzu Suimlcr, Mary ju. National Honor Society The Honor Society occupies a prominent position in school life as an organization Whose membership has been selected from the leaders of the Senior class. Character, scholarship, lead- ership, and willingness to serve are the four qualities one must possess in order to gain mem- bership. To be eligible, a student must main- tain an average of 90 throughout his high school career and be a participant in one or more extra- curricular activities. However, most members belong to several interest groups. Iuniors who have met the requirements are atappedn in May. That is, the old members turn the government of the Society over to the students who will belong the next year in an assembly. This assembly is held to acquaint the student body with those who have been selected as members and to spur the student body to greater effort. Many a hard- Working boy or girl has been rewarded by mem- bership in this organization. The Honor Society is unique, for, although some of the most active students in school belong, it is more of an honorary group than an active one. The members are given the opportunity of Wearing an emblem pin which is the torch of knowledge on a keystone. Clairton has had an Honor Society for eight- een years. The charter for a chapter of the Na- tional Honor Society Was granted in 1930. The purpose of the Honor Society is to encourage scholarship and character development. There are thirteen members in the present group which Miss Amelia Opacic sponsors. The oilicers are: Ianice Nelson, president, Bob Royle, vice president, and Dorothy Sanovich, secretary- treasurer. fibre:-iam Please tell me if The Babe Bnth Storyv is in. The purpose of the organi- zation is to better relationships among the stu- dents, aid weaker girls in athletic skills. pro- mote good sportsmanship and aid in the Girls, Intramural Program. All sophomore, junior, and senior girls a1'e eligible for membership. Election to the Asso- cation is by the unanimous vote of all the members. To be considered for membership a girl must have distinguished herself in at least one sport, be in the upper ten per cent of her class athletically, and have definite good sportsmanship qualities. New members are taken into the group after each major sport. A pledge goes through a hazing period in which she must abide by certain initiation rules. When the pledgee 94 14 tlnletic 14 Aociativn has met the informal requirements, she is sworn into the group during a solemn formal initiation. The girls hold social affairs at the Clairton Lodge every month. The year is started by the usual alumni party. At the end of the year an annual picnic is held for the graduating members. They are presented with a gift from the sophomore and junior members. The G. A. A. sponsors the three major sport tournaments-volleyball, basketball, ano bowling. At the present time the G. A. A. has thirty-two members and has an alumni of fifty- six members. The C. A. A. members may easily be dis- tinguished by their emblems of C. A. A. in black chenille on an orange background which is worn on a black sweater every Friday when the weather permits. Iirls Atlllvlim- Assuuizltiml N . I o hn Philip Sousa The High School Band 106 The bead These hearts were Woven of human joys and cares, Washed marvelously with sorrow, swift to mirth. The years had given them kindness. Dawn was theirs, And sunset, and the colors of the earth. These had seen movement, and heard musicg known Slumber and waking, loved, gone proudly friendedg Felt the quick stir of wonderg sat alone, Touched flowers and furs and cheeks. All this is ended. There are waters blown by changing winds to laughter And lit by the rich skies, all day. And after, Frost, with a gesture, stays the waves that dance And wandering loveliness. He leaves a white Unbroken glory, a gathered radiance, A width, a shining peace, under the night. This year we have been twice saddened by the presence of death in our very midst-Mr. Stilley and Mr. Obradovich. Mr. Joseph W. Stilley was born at F inleyville, Pennsylvania August 21, 1882. He resided at Charleroi and later at McKeesport before coming to Clairton. While at Charleroi, he played class A baseball. On November 11, 1903, Mr. Stilley was injured in the Clairton mill where he was a crane operator. After being injured, Mr. Stilley served the city of Clairton first as a mail carrier and later as the truant officer for forty-one years. It was as truant oflicer that we all learned to know and love him. No one in and about school ever attained to his height of popu- larity. Mr. Stilley was friend to everyone who knew him and everyone was his friend. He died November 14, 1947. Mr. Milan Obradovich was born November 20, 1895 in Yugoslavia. WVhen a lad in his teens, he came to America and settled in Clairton. Soon after arriving here he went to work in the mill where he was an engineer on the mill railroad. Later he came to work in our high school as a janitor. This position he held until the time of his death-February 18, 1948. We as students at CHS knew Mr. Obradovich as the quiet little janitor who was always busy. 107 Y-I 'fm' V- , x Ttrfl- f 7 V 'ki x gt g,-x k gfgxfKff1f .1 ,V K . - QQ. , f'5f,1 1 Jlzeg ' Iggkg ,N y Z HL ,rg Rn 14 ma mater VVe hail thee Alma Mater, Our voices raised on high With loyalty unfailing, and Love that shall not die.
