Academic Oe athk n: This year’s Academic Decathlon was held in November at Palomar College. Top acodemic students from all over San Diego County spent a day competing for medals in such subjects as the arts, languages, mathematics, social studies, and economics. This year's Clairemont winners were Shando Magee, who won a silver medal for science, and Lorna Swanson, who won a bronze medal in economics. Academic Team: The Academic Team, coached by Betty Olson and llaria Krejer, was a team of students who competed against other San Diego City Schools to see who could accurately answer the greatest number of questions in the shortest amount of time. Participants had to be reasonably quick with answers as well os have a wide variety of knowledge. C.S.F. stands for the Colifornio Scholastic Federa- tion. The requirement that hos to be met in order to join is a 3.5 grade point overage with no F's or U's. C.S.F. participates in several activities throughout the year, including a trip to Disneyland on C.S.F. night, which occurs once a year. There is a reception at the end of each year honoring C.S.F.'s life members, seniors who have belonged to C.S.F. for at least six semesters. They also fund raise and set up a booth for Sadie Hawkins. C.S.F. is a club that rewards students who work hard throughout the year. ASTRONOMY Clairemont is the only Son Diego city school with an observatory. The Astronomy Club taught students how to use the telescope and identify constellations. They went on overnight trips to the desert and mountains, bringing along their mobile telescope, which they exhibited ot the Greot Escape. They also went to the Laguna Mountains to use S.D.S.U.'s and Ml. Polomar's observatories, which have even more odvanced telescopes, to observe planets, stars, and galaxies. Astronomy dub.
