THE UPPER CLASS The senior doss of 1988 hos tome a long woy. From humble roots os Clairemont's first freshman doss to hav- ing more school spirit than the lost several senior dosses, this group hos stepped oport from the rest. Mr. Thorpe, of the AVID program, described this progression best by saying, This senior doss's evolution hos been eloquent. This doss hos hod o reputation of being a success oriented group. From the entire group taken collectively to the individual peaces” of the whole, this doss took on a challenge with style. This year's seniors were, self starters, self motivated herd workers. If they decided to do something they followed through and did it,” said cooch Krupens. This determined attitude was shown to its fullest extent when this doss, os juniors, wos threatened with the abolition of the block schedule. The students and the staff rallied to its defense ond eventually convinced the board of education of its effectiveness. The statistics echo this commitment to achievement. The district's 12th grade dropout rate is 14.9% whereos Clairemont’s is only 11.5%. “Discipline problems are down, noted the Vice Principal, Mr. Schroeder. An in- creased motivation for post secondary school has shown that this year's seniors aren't satisfied with only o high school diplomo. Indeed, the class of '88 wos much noted for its goal setting. It wasn't satisfied with the satisfactory, but in- stead strove for the exemplary. Mr. Thorpe attributed its success to a variety of reosons. “They are adept at changing, and adjusting their views to a complex society. This class hos an amalgam of perserverence, in- telligence, compassion and curiousity about why we ex- ist. You are the ones looking for the answer. Of all the other people, such os Socrates and Plato, looking for this answer, the class of '88 has a chance of finding it.” 128 SENIORS
