Cloiremont's cross-country teom finished fourth this year. On an individual basis, Jaime Montero and Doug Knight were nam- ed to the first team in the Western League 1987. Jaime also finished sixteenth out of three hundred starters in the C.I.F. thompionships. When asked how he felt about this year’s teom, Coach Cravens replied, They were very cooperative and work- ed hard; I was very pleased with their overall improvements. The girls’ cross-country team was made up of three new recruits with second year returning runners, Elizabeth Contreras and Deeno Peterson. Bosed on the determined effort given by all the team members, they were expected to do better than they hod. Their record doesn’t do justice to the positive attitude the team had. The three Contreras sisters, led by senior and number-one runner Diana Conlreros, gave the sport a family atmosphere with emphasis placed on the enjoyment of running. SPORTS 121

 For the first time in olmost o decode, the Chiefs donned woter polo tops ond took to the pool. The young teom, consisting mostly of freshmen ond sophomores, competed odmirobly against var- sity squods from all over the league that boasted starting line-ups of four-year veterans. Though no one on the teom had ever before played the sport, they pulled together quickly and began looking like a real team after only a few games. Team captoin Ben Kiblinger did a fine job in the hole position. Junior Kevin Miller, the teom MVP, was a great asset to the team, not only because of his speed ond high scoring percentage, but because he is a lefty — a helpful quolity for a team. Erick Nelson caught on quickly to being goalie and was able to block with the best of them by the end of the seoson. Although the new team did not win any gomes, it was far from a disap- pointing season. Coach Earnest is looking forword to next yeor's returning players who have ac- quired a taste for the game and are even more hungry for a win. 4 SPORTS 123
