On the 'Y other hand, U.S. grimly confronted ffA-f J issues concerning the White House I and AIDS crisis. 'Q I IRAN CRISIS I Once again the President 9 N figured prominently in the headlines. Reagan claims he was ' II not fully informed about his own . I 5 secret arms dealing with Iran in g iii exchange for the American hostages. The Iran-Contra scandal severely damaged the ad- . . If ministration's credibility. Oliver North, one of the key figures in the scandal, slowed the investiga- tion by refusing to speak before the Senate Committee. Taking the 5th Camendmentj, was the trendy thing to do this year. AIDS CRISIS The AIDS fAcquired Immune Deficiency Syndromej crisis has brought attention to the public eye and the medical community. In San Diego alone there were two hundred and eighty reported cases of AIDS. Among those reported cases, sixty four of them I have died. These statics are up I from only two reported AIDS cases in 1981. The rapid spread of this disease has caused scientists to work diligently to try to find a suc- cessful cure for this fatal disease. Concern over the issue has promp- ted San Diego City Schools to have an AIDS information lecture 'L :is a .i .:Y. H r to be taught in English classes v SOOU. VOYAGER America recovered from the Challenger disaster last year by triumphing in the air with the Voyager. The Voyager was the first plane that traveled around the world in nine days without refueling. The insect-like plane was designed by Burt Rutan, who is president of his own firm, Rutan Aircraft Factory. ws- Q HANDS ACROSS AMERlCA On Memorial Day Weekend of 1986, an event, that involved 5.4 million people occurred, it was Hands Across America. Across the country, covering 4125 miles, for a period of fifteen minutes, peo- ple everywhere hand in hand, sang and celebrated together. The idea was to raise money to fight hunger and homelessness. Each participant was asked to donate ten dollars for this worthy cause. Among the millions were celebrities from Hollywood who joined hands for this memorable event. LADY LIBERTY July Fourth was celebrated with a bigger bang than usual, because this year was Lady Liberty's 100th Anniversary. To commemorate this spectacular oc- ji' casion, there were musical events, boat parades, and great fireworks. Millions came out along the New York Harbor to honor this X majestic lady, who represented liberty, justice, and freedom for all. CARY GRANT 1904-1986 Cary Grant, the debonair and elegant man on the screen of Hollywood, died of a stroke at the . 4. A f 1' -'bs'-V V, . age of 62. From generation to generation, he was considered a screen legend, who star- red in 72 movies. Some of his well known movies are Hitchcock's To Catch A Thief, Notorious, and North by North . Even today his classic movies from the 5O's and 60's arejust as popular. AMERlCA'S CUP The history of America's Cup dates back 136 years. Each year the U.S. has won this title, ex- cept in 1988. Dennis Conner's Stars and Stripes spon- sored by the San Diego Yacht Club, regained the America's Cup which was lost to Australia. PEACE WALK California! Nevada! Arizona! Utah! Colorado! Nebraska! Arm in arm, in a clash of colors, age, and na- tionality, they walked in protest. The great peace march, a cross-country trek for nuclear disarmament, was the most dramatic protest of the year. Beginning in Los Angeles, they accomplished a 3700 mile walk to the capital, where cheers, rallies, and speeches, awaited them. Student Life 3
