FOREWORD Keys of the past have always unlocked the doors for today. A subtle blending of past and present pervades the atmosphere of San Diego and its surroundings. The rich, colorful doys of early Spanish California reflect in our heritage and play an essential part in the area's development. Musical Spanish names, holding the flavor of an earlier era, linger on our tongues in daily converse. Our quest for knowledge stems in part from the impetus provided by the good Franciscan fathers. The Padre Dam, still in existence, mark- ed the beginning of water control and irri- gation, so necessary in a region of whim- sical, undependable rainfall. For many decades the architecture of San Diego mirrored the adobe and tile structures of the dons. Our traditional hospitality, our cultural pursuits, and even our tastes in food retain the distinctive aura of the gracious days of the ranchos. The daring Spanish explorers who con- quered the desert routes to San Diego provided a vital key to its development, as did those who first ventured into the harbor. With the example of the past before us, it would follow that our interest in growth and expansion will unlock the doors of the future.
