«r5remonf,Kigh ■■ bi'9°- CM,i' FOREWORD Keys of the past have always unlocked the doors for today. A subtle blending of past and present pervades the atmosphere of San Diego and its surroundings. The rich, colorful doys of early Spanish California reflect in our heritage and play an essential part in the area's development. Musical Spanish names, holding the flavor of an earlier era, linger on our tongues in daily converse. Our quest for knowledge stems in part from the impetus provided by the good Franciscan fathers. The Padre Dam, still in existence, mark- ed the beginning of water control and irri- gation, so necessary in a region of whim- sical, undependable rainfall. For many decades the architecture of San Diego mirrored the adobe and tile structures of the dons. Our traditional hospitality, our cultural pursuits, and even our tastes in food retain the distinctive aura of the gracious days of the ranchos. The daring Spanish explorers who con- quered the desert routes to San Diego provided a vital key to its development, as did those who first ventured into the harbor. With the example of the past before us, it would follow that our interest in growth and expansion will unlock the doors of the future. WHEN NATURE BLESSES the earth with enough roin, the foothills spread o golden corpct in thanksgiving. 3 4 Water-—a precious key to unlock latent life in an arid land— magically transforms 5 the soil into a fertile source of sustenance for an ever-expanding population. Troubled by lack of experience, unusually tough com- petition, and a few bad breaks, the Chiefs struggled through 23 games, winning 6 and losing 17. The only league wins came against Point Loma twice, thus easing the pain of finishing in the Western League cellar. The scoring of Ken Henderson, with two 32-point games, and steady play by Bill Mason, Ted Heckman, and Randy Allen helped salvage an otherwise disappointing season. The presence of ten seniors and only one underclassman on the team prevented this year from being one of rebuilding. How- ever, despite this graduation toll, basketball should again take a turn for the better with several fine JV players joining the varsity next year. The farsighted merchants and investors who have made our community possible will also deter- mine tomorrow’s continued growth. Clairemont's merchants have generously supported school activities, and have become somewhat used to seeing us with hand outstretched, seeking assistance. Now is our chance to extend a hand again, this time to express our gratitude and appreciation for all they have done for our community. This is our way of giving them something in return for their many favors. Here is our gift to you. On the following pages we have pictured a group of Clairemont students embarking on a lighthearted tour of shopping and window wishing around the area's centers to show the variety of mer- chandise and services you have to offer. Thank you for the faith you have demonstrated in the development of our community. 198 Clairemont Quad 199 YOU MEAN I gel compound inleretl? SO THAT’S WHERE it i.'
