FOOTBALL The 1951 football season saw the Claflin Wildcats with coaches Nelson Hartman and Gordon Pekarek capture second place in the Quivira League standings. The purple and white were led by 8 seniors and some very good prospects of underclassrnen in their 1951 gridiron appearances. Winning their first game 6--o, they ended up witharecord of5 won, 4 lost. At Macksville the two coaches started with two new men in the backfield who had never been in the backfield before. They were Jack Feist, a senior and Jerome Beck, a junior who played his first game of football against Macksville. On defense Jerome Gerstenkorn, Joe Chism, Lester Shaw, and Jack Feist were exceptionally good in many of the games and in other games other players made spark- ling tackles and runs. .Toe Chism was unable to play the last two games due to an injury received in a game earlier in the season.
