By rhe year 1995 or 2000, some of us will have forgorren about rhe losing or winning seasons, rhe good rimes, rhe bad rimes, and rhe days of our high school years. In addi- tion, we will have perhaps forgorren rhe world in which we lived rhese high school years. The yearbook is a history that purs our high school world inro perspective wirh rhe society in which we live. This year, we asked C.M. srudenrs ro derermine some of rhe most imporranr narional and inter- national events of 1984-1985. Here are some of rhe replies: Determined To Be The Most Significant By C.M. VIDEO ENTERTAINMENT The homelife of on overage Civic Memoriol srudenr is nor a very complicated one. There is always rhe usual load of homework and study- ing to do or home, bur most students moke rhis rheir last priority. Afrer-school hours ore usually filled wirh rest ond relaxation. These hours ore usually spent in front of the Television. Would great grandparents of today's teenagers ever have imagined the variety of entertainment that would be available within one room of rhe overoge household? Wirh rhe popularity of cable T.V., rhe srudenr hos a variety of shows to watch. When a srudenr wonts to listen to music ond to watch it or rhe some rime, he turns on MTV and watches videos. Most videos tell rhe imagined story behind rhe song. The videos that don't hove anything to do wirh rhe song usually show rhe group screaming in its natural habitat of smoke, fire, and leather. These videos hove caused much concern from psychologists ond parents who claim rhor o sense of creativity or imagination is tost in rhe process of watching videos. They appear to be here to stay, however. If rhe srudenr does nor feel like listening to music, he con watch a movie on a movie channel. When there is nothing on these channels to watch, he might be lucky enough to have a VCR. With o VCR he can buy or rent his cassette of music or movies. Video rental stores opened up every- where almost overnight to make ovoilable for home use everything from Disney to rhe bresr CM TIMES Vol. Ill Berhalro, II. Esr. 1983 box office hits. While prices for going to rhe movie approached $5 00, rhe rental seems to be a good solution. Whor was to come next? Satellite discs began popping up in people's yards facing south to corch rhe beams from communication satellites which broadcast a multitude of channels from over rhe equator of rhe eorrh. Although rhe homelife of on over age Civic Memoriol srudenr is nor o very com- plicated one, his technology becomes increas- ingly complex. O.O. Areo Conresr Winners. Seared: Tammy Koerner, F.rsr. High school, and even grade school, students brought home terms such as byte, Apple, boor, or “cursor that rheir parents didn't understand. Parents could no longer help rheir children wirh this home- work. Crash courses on how to use rhis strange looking typewriter wirh on attached T.V. were prevalent. Computers began to be found ev- erywhere — in dossrooms, in rhe guidance office, ond in rhe principal's office. CM's grading system went computer. People somehow knew how much these electronic devices could do, bur weren’r quire sure how to get them to do it. 1985 produced o generation of groduores who were at least confident obour getting rhe computer to work for and wirh them. These students comprehended o tech- nology that rheir parents perhaps only dreamed about. COMMUNITY SPIRIT NEW REQUIREMENTS Even though there were no new classes offered rhis year, rhe freshmen and sopho- mores of 1985 were now required to have twenty ond one half credits to graduate Changes in rhe number of credits and course requirements were mode in o reaction to a government study colled A Nation or Risk, which mode a number of suggestions to im- prove rhe schools of our country. The stare of Illinois began to follow some of these sugges- tions. Counselor Gary Cain feels rhor srudenrs will be carrying a full load of classes and since these will be required classes, students will have to be coreful obour rheir progress through rhe courses. The new requirements ore as follows: 3 credits of English, 2 credits of sodal studies, 2 credits of math, 1 credit of science, 1 credit in arts. 1 2 credit in consumer managemenr or economics, 1 2 in health, 21 2 in P.E., ond drivers' education. NEW SUPERINTENDENT After rhe retirement of Superintendent Don Simpson in March, a new superintendent was appointed. Assistent Superintendent Lewis Houser rook over as rhe new superintendent on July firsr. Mr. Hauser followed Mr. Simpson from teacher to principal to administrator. He begon os o moth reocher ond school principal or Cottage Hills Grade School. Mr. Houser rhen went to Trimpe Junior High and rook over os principal when Mr Simpson left. When Simpson wos appointed superintendent, Hauser be- come assistant superintendent for business af- fairs. Hauser has been in rhe district for twenty nine years. Probably rhe biggest event that hos ever happened to Berhalro is rhe 1984 Civic Memori ol Eogles varsity football ream. At least rhis is whor most CM srudenrs think. This ream be- came the firsr CM ream to ever be Mississippi Volley Conference Champions and rhe firsr CM ream to qualify for store. The players brought rhe fons many exciting games that will always be remembered. Berhalro seemed to be joined together by o common bond. 3
