f«— ns Spectator '82' Civic Memorial High School Bethalto, Illinois Volume 31 Table Of Contents Introduction Faculty Seniors Class Traits Underclassmen Homecoming Sports Organizations For now, this yearbook is to look at and laugh about with close friends. In the future, it is to enjoy, re- membering the old days we shared at CM. These pages are a record of our teenage life in classes, clubs, on winning and losing teams, in con- certs, and plays. This yearbook shows why this year was special and why it was different from any other. This is why the 1981-1982 Specta- tor is especially for you — the stu- dents and faculty of CM High. K.K. 2 Activities - Wm mm- mmm. I ■■KB 'g m m The Spectator is for the futures of the 1982 Civic Memorial High School students. For the past years of school, we have grown together from crayons and fngerpaints to Hr college applications and paychecks. Now' the P time has come for us to reach for individual goals and go out on our own. It is an exciting, frightening, and confusing experienced but it is one step closer to becoming an adult. No matter where our paths will lead, we will spent together at CM. Keep in mind progress we have made, but more impor- tantly, set your sights on the progress we have yet to make! Sincerely, moi 3 o o I o a r Harold Balsters, Richard McGaughey, George Draper, Clyde Jones, Robert Mull, Don Smith, Paul Hattery 4 ARE TEACHERS REALLY HUMAN? Between the innocence of babyhood and the conquest of the adult world, lies a teacher. The are as ancient as Adam, as modern as televi- sion and available in all sizes, male and female, from 22 year old college grads to an experienced 75 years of age. Teachers are found everywhere - in classrooms and cars, at football games, dances, bowling alleys and after school. Little girls love them, little boys hate them, sophomores ignork therri, older students tolerate them, and graduates appreciate them. Teachers like neat papers, lunch hours, clean chalkboards perfect attendance, and vacations. Teachers don’t like nameless papers, too much makeup, tight clothes, smart alecks or bubble gum. A teacher is happiest when everyone understands the lesson, saddest when there is a huge stack of smudgy tests to correct, and nicest when you’ve just decided to hate her. Who else can cause more grief, embarrassment, irritation and de- spair; be hated, ignored, knocked, and gossiped - about, yet seem so wonderfully sympathetic and tolerant when the world is a mess and your self-confidence is tumbling? Yes, teachers are nerve-wracking nuisances, just task masters to be endured - but when commencement is over and it’s time to face the world, we are thankful for the knowledge and understanding of the most influential and dedicated people in the world, TEACHERS! Ten students coached by Mr. Johnson went to Lewis and Clark Com- munity College on Saturday, February 13. Fourteen area high schools were represented. Students took two tests in areas of biology, physics, graphics, mathematics, English, and chemistry. Many students placed individually in their particular subject. As a school, CM won the second place trophy. Congratulations Jets! The Voice of Democracy speech contest held their awards banquet on February 28 at the Cottage Hills VFW. This year’s theme was Building America Together. Each participant wrote a speech and taped it at a local radio station for judging. Carla Cain was the first place winner. He took the first place titles in Conference, Disti Sectionals. Kip then went on to take thefstate title at 98 lbs. or Kip Khstoff PliKASK KKMAIX si: it f | nrm-J a senior reflecting back on the high school experience . . . 1 remember what it was like to be new around here .. . the place seemed a little bigger then, and though I never admitted it, a whole lot scarier! I remember searching hallways and stairways and auditoriums filled with unfamiliar faces, hoping to find someone to share my confusion with .. . and feeling so grateful whenever anyone smiled. Forawhile, I wondered how I was ever going to fit into this strange, super-sophisticated world . . . but now I wonder what I was so worried about . . . the confidence came . . . and so did the fun! What an assortment of unforgettable characters, I’ve met here! There are class- mates I liked from the start, and those who took a little getting used to . . . There are teachers I love, and teachers I survive . . . There were upper-class celebrities who awed me with their style, and lower-class innocents who appear to stand in awe of me . . . But most of ail, there are good friends I’ve made here . . . and all the together times we share. I remember times we won together and times we lost . . . times when we worried together, and times when we celebrated . . . but how do you ever say thanks for a mind-full of beautiful memories? I remember autumns when all the excitement in the world flashed between two goal-posts, winters warm with the glow of our holiday spirits . . . springtimes that dazzle us with the promise of freedom, and long lazy summer vacations when not doing anything was our favorite group activity! Looking back I’m amazed that so many crazy and colorful things could have happened to me! It won’t be easy saying goodbye to this school when May rolls around and to all my friends . . . But I have so much more to learn about the world and about myself . . . and it’s time to get started. I only know that wherever I go, whatever 1 do, the days I’ve spent right here will always be a really special part of my life ... A time to Remember!
