He has endured four floats, magazine sales, Prom, Coronation, and student advisory meetings. He had to organize a gift to leave the school so no one will forget the Class of '81. But his job is not finished after graduation, he must co-ordinate the class reunions. Undoubtedly the Prom and Coronation were the two biggest responsibilities for him as president. Those activi- ties took months of advance preparation. Many class- mates shared in his effort to make the dances memorable. Sometimes Jay had questioned whether it was worth it, until everything fit together for a great evening. He will never forget the preparation and success of those events. Class presidents' tend to face various adversities. Jay will always recall two situations. After two months of preparation, the night of the Junior and Senior Prom was here but the band did not show. It was an hour and a half before they were found, set up in the old high school's gym. The second ordeal involved eight nameless senior students. The scene: Mr. Kohlbum's house. Time: After dark. Activity: Working on the float. Since the theme was CM's annual Fish Fry the seniors wanted a black kettle. The solution to this problem was left up to the eight nameless students. They said they only meant to bor- row the kettle. The problem was to explain that to Mr. Kohlburn, the Bethalto Police, and the victim . . Fortu- nately, the victim dropped the charges and our class's name was cleaned. Jay wants all the seniors to remember our class motto in whatever endeavor you wish to pursue in life, GO FOR IT! On October 19, 1980 Jerilyn Bourland was elected Stu- dent Council president. As president, she had to conduct all the council meetings. She had to make sure all the projects were carried out. The 1980-81 Student Council totally revised their con- stitution. They brought it up-to-date. Jerilyn organized the bonfire. Since the bonfire was banned the previous year, it was a trial. But the school spirit blazed throughout the entire rally. Another tradition that was reinstated through her leadership was the Student Council movie. But she would not let the council members forget the regular duties. The annual Turkeyman and Snow- flake contest was held. The homecoming parade suc- cessfully strolled down Central Street. The council mem- bers had exchange days with Wood River, Alton Roxana, and Marquette. Jerilyn was delighted by the experience of getting all the council members involved in council projects. She was happy that the bonfire succeeded. Jerilyn left this statement for the future Student Coun- cils: Always keep the Student Council active and get every- one involved. The more people that work together the easier it is and it makes the job more fun. The student council can do a lot of things if the students are willing to work. GOOD LUCK NEXT YEAR! 26 Foreign Exchange Students If you remember walking down the halls of CM and hearing a strange language, you were probably in front of Anders Hernaes. Anders was a foreign exchange student. His hometown is Tonsberg, Norway. Ritch and Nancy Alexander had the pleasure of keeping him in their home. In comparing America to Norway Anders noticed that the prices were much higher in Norway. (Maybe we do have something to be thankful for!) Also, Americans drove bigger cars than Norwegians do. He said that he missed the traditional dinner on Christmas Eve which was usually ribs. Good ole CM was well liked by Anders. He enjoyed the various activities which our school sponsored. There were not as many activities in Norway. But the school work here seemed to be much easier. In Norway the students stay in one room and the teachers move around. Norwegian high school students did not have the same schedule every day which means more subjects were available. More home- work was assigned. There were no school lunches in Nor- way. The kids almost always brown-bagged it. When Anders went back to Norway he had to finish high school. Then the law says that he must be in the service for one year. In 1983 he will decide between a university or employment. The students at CM came to love Anders. He was ex- tremely musically talented. Anders broadened the view of the world to many CM students. We wish him success and happiness. There were many new students who enrolled at Civic Memorial, among them was Per NSslund. A 19 year old senior foreign exchange student from Jakobosberg, Swe- den. His family for the year has been Max and Betty Norris of Bethalto. One of the first things that Per noticed was that the cost of Swedish items are much more expensive than they are here. Also the cars are bigger in America than they are at home. Per commented that he likes CM a lot, but it was hard to get use to the difference in school schedules. His school in Jakobosberg is very different than here. At home, school is more of a college than a high school. You never have the same schedule every day. Sometimes you have twenty minutes between classes. I miss that a lot Per has been in many activities this year: his favorites were stage band and swimming on the YMCA Swim Team. Where he broke several swim team records. When Per was asked about his out of school activities he re- marked, Hanging around with my friends and playing my guitar are what I like to do the most He and Anders have formed a band with some other CM students which keeps him very busy. Per will be returning home in July to finish out one more year of high school, before starting any future plans. We will all miss Per and wish him the best of luck in the future. 27 The Uncompromising 28 Seniors!! Seniors!! 29 FISH STAND A Better Way There is no return to the things we did In the hours of yesterday. But we can go forward to better things And do them a better way As cannot retrace the steps we have made Nor call back the words we said. No, we cannot do things over again — But we can do better instead. EVERETT WENTWORTH HILL Goals As I paused to think of something That sets some men apart. It seemed to me that goals in life Must be the place to start. Imagine playing football On an unmarked field of green, Not a goal line to be sought, Not a goalpost to be seen. It would b an aimless battle Were there nothing to be gained, Without a thing to strive for, Not a score to be attained. We must have purpose in our lives, For the Flame that warms the soul Is an everlasting vision. Every man must have his goal. ARTHUR J. It was the first event of the homecoming week. The bonfire started off with a pep-ral- ly. The cheerleaders, stagehand, drill team, and coach Beck did a good job in getting the hundreds of EAGLE fans fired up! Next, the thespians led a fu- neral march to to the bonfire. The Ex- plorer's casket was thrown into the wood and was lighted. As the fire was burning the spectators had fun cheer- ing and participating in races. The parade was set for Friday Octo- ber 10 at 2:00 p.m. School was let out early that day so everyone could enjoy the festivities. The winning floats were: 1st place-French Club, 2nd place-junior Class, and 3rd place was the Freshman class. The football game between Mar- quette CM was a classic confronta- tion. Over halfway through the 1980 season, Marquette boosted the best offense CM claimed the stingiest defense. We now know that CM is for real, said Marquette coach John Rogers. CM snuffed out the Explorers' playoff hopes as the Eagles soared to their sixth straight win. Chris Cowan completed 2 out of 2 passes. The Ex- plorers saw their running game sty- mied for the first time. Another one Bites the Dust! 84 Bonfire 85 Don't Let The Parade Pass You By 86 Preparations 87 Somewhere Over 88 The Rainbow Were we in the land of Oz? It sure seemed like it with all of the colorful dresses and tuxes. Everyone was smiling and laughing and seemed to be enjoy- ing themselves. Could it have been a dream? For some people it was a dream come true. The Seniors put a lot of work into the planning of the corona- tion. The stage was set with a beautiful rainbow. A yellow brick road lead to it. Somewhere over the Rainbow was the perfect theme for the evening. 89 Homecoming Queen Jerilyn Bourland 90 Miss Jerilyn Bourland, the 1980-81 Homecoming Queen of Civic Memorial, was crowned at the annual corona- tion on October 11, 1980. 91 Underclassman Maids Zina Ssparza Cori Schoenbaum Shelley William Cori Pelan V U n o r s S o m a n (Jamie Cleveland Kris Zutt B r a n ) e n k n s Queen Candidates Escorts D e n s e D o 0 1 e v 94 Underclassmen Maids Escorts Crown Bearers Mistress and Master of ceremonies Pep Assembly The EAGLE spirit at C.M. soared this year due partly to our fantastic pep assemblies. The cheerleaders, stage band, drill team, and drama club did a great job in building school spirit. Two of the most memorable assemblies occurred during football season. In order to get the pep club fired up the cheerleaders let the football players throw pies in their faces. The louder the pep club got; the closer the football players got to the cheerleaders. At the other assembly coach Beck was presented with our own version of “This Is Your Life. The humorous script was presented by the football players. The highlight of this assembly was when Keith Hausman (Gilberetta Beck) kissed her little brother. 98 Fall Sports Fall Sports 99 Eagles 1 V a r s i t y F Row 1: Dan Coleman, Brian Ewing, Kevin Tarrant, Pete Forsythe, Roger Martin, Cord Cooper, Brad Taylor, Bill Whiteside, Mike Epps, Brian Hausman, Nick Williams, Skip Jones, Lance Darr. The last game of the season ended with a trip to Mt. Vernon where the EAGLES once again were victorious with a 17-3 win. Our football team this year consisted of six EAGLE lettermen being chosen 1st team All- Conference, three 2nd team All-Conference, and one Special Mention. Coach Wilschetz brought forth uni- versality throughout the program. He has the freshman, sophomore, junior, and sen- ior players running the same type of pres- sure defense. This full court 1-2-3 zone pressure defense will undoubtably prevail in the future. The coach has gained respect from the players and other coaches in the system. Freshman Basketball “I have been very fortunate to be assigned the Freshman Basketball Coaching job. The team i have, went to state as eighth graders. They lost the first game at state, but even reaching that far is quite an accomplishment. You can tell these boys have done a lot of hard work with the talent and skills they have shown. They shoot excep- tionally well for ninth grade players. The ball handling has shown much improvement, but still has a lot of work ahead of it. The main assets of these fine players is their eagerness to want to learn more, along with their shoot- ing. Their attitudes are very good and I hope they keep it that way. They work hard in practice and do what the coach tells them to do. I am very pleased with the overall playing of these boys and have enjoyed very much the chance to help them become better basketball players in the future. Gary Bruening, Freshmen, Coach. The junior varsity wrestlers added their part to the success of the season by bringing home a second place trophy from the Collinsville Tournament. They received this honor for the outstanding achievements and loyality they had for their class. Is this your idea of a perfect prom? Where's the band? Maybe they couldn't find Bethalto! Jay Tomerlin, class president, was frantically searching for news of the missing band. Until the heavenly hand of Jesus came down. We overheard a conversation between Jesus and God. All of the problems were solved. The band made it after an hour of waiting. At first the trance was broke by the absence of the band. But it brought the couples closer. People had a time to talk to the rest of the couples. Jeff Gibbons, the Jr. class vice-president said I was really disappointed that the band didn't show because everything else went right. Mitzi McCalley said It was a good change even though it wasn't planned! Mr. Halemeyer assumed that the band was lost be- cause Bethalto is not that big of a town! He thought that all of the hard work in prepara- tion was lost. But the band did show! The decorations were classy! said Jerilyn Bour- land. Everything went great after the band set up. Romance filled the air. But all of the students realized that the band was not what made the Prom. The unity of the Junior and Senior class made it exciting. 152 The Unforgettable Unbalanced Row 1: Annette Hatten, Lisa Williams, Cindy Llyod, Jerilyn Bourland. Student Council Pres., Jerilyn Bourland, began the ceremonies by leading the students with the Pledge of Allegiance. Next the Stage Band preformed such footstomping tunes as “St. Louis Blues. The Swing Choir, dressed in full skirts, bobby socks, rolled up jeans, and ponyrails, sung a 50's medley. The chorus, under the direction of Ritch Alexander, preformed three songs. Mr. Alexander was under a lot of pres- sure since accompanist Sarah Scates was absent. Where were you Sarah? We missed ya! The newly formed Flag Team preform at an assembly for the first time. Their routine was to Another One Bites the Dust. Good job girls! The Drama Club pre- sented a skit to fit the spirit of the occasion. The country folks met the city folks and conflict- ed on what Thanksgiving is all about. Next the band, again under the direction of Ritch Alex- ander, preform two songs for our listening plea- sure. And last but not at all the least, Drill Team preformed a snappy routine to Brand New Day.
