JinrcUuirh The high school years repre- sent stages of growth and tran- sition. The direction and form in which the individual grows great- ly depends upon his high school. Through athletic, scholastic, and social activities Ciyic Memorial High School is dedicated to de- veloping the individual. This year the Spector Staff has tried to capture this individual development and preserve it for lasting memories. We have de- viated from the usual style in an effort to present the student body with a truly unique edition. We hope this annual brings you as much enjoyment as it has brought us. SUE CAMP MRS. ROSEMARY SCHULTZ (fitijltsh Bcpartment MISS DOROTHY RAINEY English is the one subject re- quired, not only locally but by state regulation, at ail levels through the eleventh grade and urgently recommended for the twelfth grade student. Whatever his choice of career, an individual will need to read with under- standing, express his thoughts clearly in speaking or in writing, and be acquainted with the world of reading materials through which he may advance himself in his vocation and spend his leisure hours profitably and en- joyably. MRS. MARY HODGE MRS. COREEN FAUSER 12 ILatin Department Latin, widely known as The Basic Language, provides a challenge to the most able student but is well within reach of the average. It provides a foundation for the study of any other language, including English, and offers a background for the study of literature, history, and the world of ideas as well as the vocabulary of most profes- sional and pre-professional subjects. A member of the State Department of Education stated the case thus: If educators preserve the ideology of sound liberal education, Latin enrollments, as well as those of modern languages, should grow as the population grows. MISS RAINEY Latin Candy Sales You've got to be putting me on! 13 Iflueir Bi’partnu'nt The music program at Civic Memorial High School is composed of two departments, the instrumental and the vocal. Mr. Ernest Opp is director of the instru- mental, and Mr. Gerald Prange directs the vocal. The instrumental department consists of the concert band, the marching band, the pep band, and the stage band. Credit is given for participation in these organizations toward an award at the end of the year. The vocal department consists of the girl's chorus, the boys' chorus, the glee club, and the double sextet. Credit is also given for participation in the glee club toward an award at the end of the year. The future will see an orchestra at C.M. A string program is developing very well at Bethalto Grade School and Wilbur Trimpe Junior High. The future high school orchestra will provide the students, as well as the community, with an acquaintance with some of the world's finest music. MR. ERNEST OPP 14 MR. GENE PRANGE ibisturii 01'partnu'nt The purpose of Social Studies at C.M. is to pro- vide a background of Amer- ican Life, to help the stu- dents realize the importance of current events, and to provide a study of the ba- sic principles of our govern- ment. The students in ad- vanced art classes delve deeper into the various art processes. These class- es allow the students the opportunity to explore the field in individual projects by choosing materials and subjects that interest them. The Art History and Art Appreciation courses are geared more toward the aesthetic understanding of the arts. In the His- tory class the development of man's cultures and arts are followed in a chronological order starting with the cave man and following through the modern day. The appreciation course brings about awareness of the beauty in everyday life, stressing the corre- lation between works of art found in museums and art found in our every- day experiences. phusiral (fintratinn Bepartment Man this ceiling's heevyl The objectives of the Physical Education program are to develop ability in the perform- ance of fundamental skills, to gain a working knowledge of the rules required for organized sports, and to develop individual an oppor- tunity to participate in a program of activities, in spite of his capacities or capabilities. Mornings at school you would see Jim leaning on his locker, not quite wide awake. There were al- ways friends around him and he was seldom seen walking down the halls alone. He would not have been described by teachers as their most attentive student, but he never let a class become boring or too routine. Very few people could get a serious answer from Jim and his comical nature won him numerous friends. One of Jimmy's interests was playing the trom- bone in CM's concert band. His main interest and favorite subject was drafting. Civic Memorial takes pride in having had James Kessler as one of its students and regrets his tragic death. RODNEY ROBERSON Rod Roberson, a senior at Civic Memorial, was a quiet, but friendly boy. Because of Rod's friendliness and wittiness, he had many friends. Rod was always ready to do favors for his friends any time they needed his help. Much of Rod's spare time was spent working at his father's gas station. Civic Memorial High School wishes to say that Rodney Roberson was a fine boy and that this terrible death had never happened. 55 malic Club 2, 3, 4; French Club 4 Student Council 2, 3; Varsity Club 2, 3, 4; Secretary 4; Football 1, 2; Basketball 1; Baseball 2, 3, 4; Sport Letter Winner 1, 2, 3, 4.
