Though a theme is not stressed in the SPECTATOR this year, it is hoped that the various art designs will serve to give the feeling of time, an important factor in high school life. Good times . . . bad times . . . Classes, sports, and clubs all seem to fall into the category of time. And, of course, time relates us not only to the past, but also to the future. Every student will go his own way, each having a different future, but we hope that the 1962 SPEC- TATOR will keep us in touch with times past, times when we all had something in common, Civic Memorial High School. RAINEY English Department Head Our Language Department The English Department not only has the main re- sponsibility for seeing that students improve their com- mand of their own language and become acquainted with the best writing of the English-speaking world, but it also sponsors a number of the school's activities. One such is the school newspaper, the Eaglet, this year in the capable hands of Mr. John Myers. The drama and speech teacher, Mr. John Kelso, has already directed one very successful play for the junior class and will likewise direct members of the senior class in their dramatic efforts in the spring. Latin Club has long been one of the largest and most active clubs at C. M., and now French Club, sponsored by Mrs. Lenz with the cooperation of Mr. Myers, is assuming a very active role in school life. Four members of the English Department spend part of their day in the foreign language field. Mrs. Lenz and Mr. Myers in French, Mr. Considine in German, and Miss Rainey, department head, in Latin. Mrs. Junia D. Smart teaches the upper levels of English, the highest of which compiles outstanding creative writing in a volume known as the Scribbler. Instruction of French in the Language Laboratory by Mr. Meyers. 6 Visual Aids in English IV. MRS. JUNIA D. SMART English III and IV MR. JOHN MYERS English I, II, French I MRS. DORIS B. LENZ English II, III, French II MR. JOHN KELSO English I, IV MR. JOHN CONSIDINE English I, German I. II Creative work in Art IV. The Art Department A four level art program was offered this j ear based upon the belief that creativity and artistic abil- ity can be developed in each individual. Art I is a studio course designed to provide a basic appreciation and fundamental knowledge of art expression and art process. Art II, III, and IV provide creative programs for students of advanced interests and abilities. 8 MR. ROBERT CARTER Our Music Department The Civic Memorial Music Department provides a program to enrich the character of the students involved, and to provide happiness, citizenship, spiritual develop- ment, and patriotism to the listening audience. Each year the high school band must meet all of these challenges along with the mastery of their instru- ment, and the ability to think and reason quickly and accurately. Because of the high standards of the music department, seventy-five per cent of the students are on the high honor or honor roll. Activities of the music department include several concerts each year, football and basketball band, and an annual Spring Music Tour. MR. ERNEST L. OPP A lot of work in daily rehearsals is required to put together a concert program. Our Mathematics Department A new course was introduced this year at CMHS for potential math majors. It follows a logical pattern of gaining all three dimensions of geometric figures in a single course rather than only the two dimensions that meet minimum college entry. The MATH DEPARTMENT, recognizing the greater emphasis upon the technological sciences, as well as its role in assisting pupils of CMHS to get a thorough, well-founded education, has attempted to readjust with the times in other ways too. This year pupils were screened according to their interest and aptitude in math through consideration of many factors. The purpose of the screening has been not to separate the smart from the dumb but to separate pupils according to the amount of math previously absorbed. This allows all pupils to progress from their present status to their utmost capacity, desire, or need. Though future changes may be made, just as has been the practice of the past, it is essential that the pupil remind him- self that he must constantly build on the basic knowledge he has gained by accepting new ideas and concepts as they arise. MR. THOMAS GRIESBAUM MR. CLIFFORD HOPPE MR. DALE RICE Algebra I, II, Geometry II, Trigo- Algebra I, General Math, Plane Ge- General Math, Algebra I nometry ometry The Science Department MR. VICTOR DUBBELDE Department Head, Chemistry MR. RONALD STOLTZ Biology I, Psycholog)', Physi- ology The Science Department consists of four fields of study. General Science surveys scientific principles in a brief and non-technical manner, and it introduces the student to the scientific method. Biology is the study of both plants and animals. Representative phyla of both kingdoms are studied in numerous laboratory experiments. Chemistry is the science which attempts to explain the structure of matter and the changes which matter undergoes. Human Physiology constitutes the first semester of an advanced biology course. The second semester, Psychology was introduced for the first time in the department. It deals with motivation, social patterns, and personality. MR. I. J. EMERT General Science, Biology I Lynn, Kay, and Terry conducting an experiment in Chemistry. I I Our Home Economics Department Regardless of what career you choose, the basic principles of managing a home are of importance to everyone. It is the important responsibility of homemaking to improve and strengthen family life today and in the future. Homemaking I is a one year course in vocational home- making offered as an elective to freshman girls. ■•This course lays the foundation of homemaking and teaches the basic skills needed for managing a home. Our Business Education Department MRS. MARY O’NEAL Department Head, Secretar- ial, D.E. and Clerical The Business Education Department offers a varied and interesting course of study for the students of Civic Memorial. New equipment in the department are the new IBM Se- lectric Electric typewriters and the Dictaphone Classroom. The department is staffed by Mrs. Mary O'Neal, Head of the Department; Mrs. Olive Brown; Miss Angela Hahn; Mrs. Donna Ericson; and Mr. Carl Behrens. MISS ANGELA HAHN Typing and General Business MR. Shorthand, and Book- keeping Studying income tax in D.E. Working with the Tele-Trainer in Secretarial Class. Becoming Better Drivers Through Driver’s Education MR. JOHN LOGAN MR. JAMES COMPIS MR SHELTON MAYES The Driver Education Department would like to help reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by carelessness brought about by the ignorance of today's motorist. The classroom phase of driver education is required of all students at the sophomore level. The aim of our classroom and behind the wheel instruction is to understand that the most important part of driving is not the manual skill of operating an automobile but developing good sound attitude and common sense toward safe driving. We try to make the student aware of the responsibility' that one takes when he gets behind the wheel of a car. This responsibility is not only to yourself, but the other people and their property. Margie and Jeanne learn what makes it go. Learning industrial techniques. Students putting the finishing touches on their woodshop projects. Knowledge of Vocations by Experience in the Industrial Arts Industrial Arts Education is a phase of general education in our high school. The Industrial Art classes give students the opportunity to test their in- terest and ability in working with tools and materials. It gives them valuable information so that they may choose their vocations more wisely. The courses offered emphasize teaching students to use tools properly and to develop an understanding of the related principles of science and mathematics. The individual pupil projects are the basic ap- proach to relating information and teaching skills in our industrial arts education. It is also our hope to develop within the student a social understanding and ability to w'ork with others as a leader or as a co-op- erative member of a group. A Sound Body to Go Along Physical The objectives of the Girl's Physical Department are to provide for more wholesome activities. Through these activities it is hoped that healthy bodies, strong minds, good sportsmanship, poised ladies, and better citizens are developed. The girls are introduced to various team and individual sports during the school year. Mrs. Pat Nobbe is the instructor of the freshman and sophomore girls. The juniors and seniors are under the instruction of Mrs. Nina Freeman. MRS. PAT NOBBE Barb's three point landing on the trampoline. With a Sound Mind Education Mr. Howard leads the boys in calisthenics, always a good physical conditioner The boy’s Physical Education Depart- ment is concerned with helping our young men develop physically as well as mentally. There is participation in various sports the year around. During warm weather, such games as softball and touch football are played. In the gymnasium, the boys partici- pate in basketball, weight-lifting, and tram- poline work. MR. Z. R. HOWARD Boys Physical Education Competitive spirit is developed in a good game of basketball. Our Social Studies Department The courses included in the Social Studies Department are World History, U. S. History, American Problems, Geography, and Government. All of the courses are elective except U. S. History, which is required of every Junior. The curricula include the following subjects: the Medieval to the Renaissance period, the story of our country, problems of complex modern civilization, world geography, and the American way of life. CHARLES XAVE Sec.-Pro Tem MR. HAROLD ALBERS Secretary MR. ROV ROBERTS MR BYROX DREXXAX MR. HILBERT PLEGGE KERMIT HARDEN You are completing twelve years of elementary and secondary school. Many of your class began their schooling the first year that Lnit 8 was formed. The first grade class in September, 1950, numbered 190 so you may see that a few of your number has dropped by the wayside. Some have moved away but some have not seen the importance of obtaining a high school diploma. You are to be congratulated upon your accomplishment. I wish those of you who are planning to enter a college or university the best of luck and hope you will see the importance of completing this phase of your education. 1 would hope those of you who do not enter an institu- tion of higher learning would continue your education in one of the technical fields. Acquiring a special skill will be necessary for you to obtain many of the advantages which a high school diploma used to provide. Now, it is becoming more and more difficult to obtain advancement unless you have added education. The fields of nursing, cosmetology, electronics, mechanics, and business are a few of the areas available to you. I wish to offer my congratulations to each of you on the completion of your education to this point, and hope for continued success in your future endeavors. 24 Kermit Harden, Superintendent FOREST KOHLBURN Each year as the date for graduation draws closer, I find myself devoting more and more time and thought to the members of the Senior Class. You are about to leave Civic Memorial High School. Graduation will be here so quickly that I hardly have time for a final evaluation of your growth and of the changes which have taken place in you since your Freshman year. Your experiences at Civic Memorial have been complex and varied. Con- sequently, my final impression of you is made up of many tflings—of pride in the diligence with which you are capable of working, pride that is tempered with amazement at the rapidity with which your behavior can change from that of a sophisticated adult to that of a child; and of confidence that you are well prepared to meet the demands of modern living, mixed with anxiety for a few shortcomings which you have not yet recognized.. However, predominant at this time of year is the increased awareness that although the opportunity to influence you, guide you, and teach you will end, I will soon be able to observe the effects of our influence, guidance, and teachings in your lives. Since you are the product of Civic Memorial High School, and the basic reason our school system exists, you may always be sure of my deep and continuing interest in you. Forest Kohlburn, Principal 25 MR. SHELTON C. MAYES Assistant Principal and Dean of Boys For the most part the duties of this of- fice are determined as problems arise through- out the year. However, they may be broad- ly classified into four areas, namely—discipline, attendance, counseling, and assisting the Prin- cipal in administering the school policy as pre- scribed by the Board of Education. A major problem of this office,” says Mr. Mayes, is trying to keep the attendance of students as regular as possible. Regular at- tendance cannot possibly be emphasized too much. Of course the parents must assume much of this responsibility and they can render no greater assistance to their child than to see that his assistance to their child than to see that his attendance is one of the greatest contributing factors to loss of interest in school, school fail- ures, and drop-outs and will surely mold an ir- regular future.” Dean of Girls The main duties of the Dean of Girls are counseling, discipline, and control of ir- regular attendance. Attendance seems to be the main prob- lem of this office. Regular attendance is of utmost importance in making accomplish- ments in school, and a great number of stu- dents and their parents cannot see the va- lidity in this until it is too late. It is therefore the Dean of Girls’ job to try to make the students aware of the im- portance of regular attendance through her other two capacities, discipline and counsel- ing. 26 MRS. MARTHA SWANN Special Teachers MRS. FLORENCE McGEE Librarian Student librarians Kay and Linda MRS. NITA TRIMPE Assistant Librarian MRS. VIOLA METZGER Unit Nurse Mr. Junior White, a 1957 graduate of Civic Memorial is the speech correc- tionist for all of the Unit 8 elementary schools and the Junior High School. Mr. White is very busy each day, but he hopes to expand next year in order to include high school students who need speech correction. Speech correction is a phase of special education that deals with finding the handicapped child and trying to cor- rect the speech defect that is present. Kan .... • -.. l ? J 4 S t 7 M Jjl21314151t MR. ORVAL WHITE. JR. Speech Correctionist 27 Civic Memorial Counselors Our guidance-counseling staff was increased considerably this year. Mrs. Twarog and Mr. Hoppe each devote one-half of their teaching day to counseling. Mr. Bell, before being called into the Armed Forces, served as part time counselor. These people along with Mr. Jones make up the guidance-counseling staff. MR. MAURICE JONES Head Counselor Informal counseling concerning future plans in education. Evaluation of test scores to aid counseling. The counselor's job is to help the student to help himself adjust and develop to his greatest potential. Most counseling sessions are centered around occupational and vocational planning, educa- tional planning, school problems, test interpre- tation (interest, ability, and aptitude), and social and personal problems. MR. IKE RHINE Head of Department of T ransportation ORGANIZATIONS A familiar sight this year was Miss Hahn, with Ellen and Paul skipping study halls and lunch hours trying their best to meet the deadlines for the year- book. Looking back with pleasure upon the memory-filled events of the year, we have attempted to capture the best and most outstanding memories between the covers of the Spectator. We consider ourselves very fortunate to have an advisor as capable as Miss Angela Hahn to help us over the rough spots and we cannot adequately express our thanks to her. Selling ads, drawing copy sheets, and innumerable other jobs were done by the regular staff members. At times their enthusiasm exceeded the amount of work to be done. Certainly, the tremendous job of editing a yearbook is inconceivable with- out the assistance and co-operation of the whole staff. We hope we have succeeded in presenting a good annual to you and that each of you will find among these pages some- thing special—something you will remember and cherish for a long time. Impressive- victories were posted over Alton, Marquette, Southwestern, and Livingston. The team will have nine re- turning lettermen to help bolster their hopes of a good season and will rely heavily on the pitching of returning lettermen Paul Corcoran, Maurice Sheff, and Tom Erzen. The Freshmen-Sophomores made a fine showing of themselves, especially in the Jerseyville Invitational where they placed third. The squad was weak in the field events but did a fine job in the running events—with Dan Cathoral being the work horse of the team running the 880, mile, and running on the mile relay team. His best effort was in the County meet where he placed fourth in the mile and broke the school record with a time of 4:46. The old record was held by A1 Maynard who ran it in 4:47 in 1952. Dan as a junior is the conference champion in the mile and is expected to improve over last year's performances. During the summer he placed fourth in the Alton Invitational meet which con- sisted of college and high school stars mostly from this area. Other good times were also turned in by Jack Gonzales and Kenny Allison. Jack as a junior broke the school record in the low hurdles which was previously held by Earl Rothe who ran the lows in 22.3 seconds in 1959. Jack's time was just barely under this with 22.2 seconds. Kenny Allison, a freshman, was not fortunate enough to break a record but was able to tie the school record set by Jack Harkey in 1953 in the 100 yard dash with a time of 10.4 seconds. Although these boys were the only ones to run in record time some of the other boys made a fine showing and are expected to improve and do even better next year. 60 DAN CATHORALL Cross Country FIRST ROW: Bob Jones, Coach, Larry Carr, Ralph Ferguson. BEATRICE WISEMAN he Junior Class THE JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS Ron Bishop, V.-Pres.; Barbara Swearingim, Sec.; Lynne Drennan, Pres. The Junior Class of 1963 has been busy with many activities. For our homecom- ing parade, the Junior Class built a first prize float. We constructed a huge head of Pinochio and our slogan was Eagles Victory, It's No Lie.” Our money making project this year was the magazine sales. The money which we make on magazines will pay for our prom. Next came the class play. The juniors chose to give The Curious Savage” by John Patrick. The play proved to be a great deal of work but also a great deal of fun. The biggest project of the class comes in the spring. This is the Junior-Senior Prom. The juniors work very hard in making this prom a success for the seniors. The prom always proves to be one of the biggest social events of the year. The junior cheerleaders are Kay Smith and Margie Stieglitz. Thresa Biesk is the substitute for the varsity cheerleaders. The Junior Class was represented at the coronation by Margie Stieglitz and Thresa Biesk. 106 John Ackerman, Terry Anderson, Louise Beasley, Jack Belangee, Dennis Berry, Danny Bess SECOND ROW: Theresa Biesk, Ronald Bishop, Sheryl Bond, Homer Bradley, Sharon Brewster, Joyce Bricker Kenneth Brooks, Sharon Broyles, Adell Bruce, Gloria Bruntgen, Cecil Cameron, Larry Carr Geraldine Cherry, William Coleman, Caren Coontz, Francis Couch, Shirley Couch, Donna Cox SECOND ROW: Gilbert Creekmore, Dennis Dale, Sharon Dillard, Lynne Drennan, Robert Edgell, Patricia Feltes Judith Flowers, Richard Gocway, James Garrett, Christine Green. One of the most exciting events of the school year is the corona- tion of the homecoming queen. In October, Brenda Thompson and Jeanne Henkhause served as maids to the Queen. The sophomore Junior Varsity cheerleaders have done remarkably well this year. Cheering our basketball and football players on to vic- tory have been Jeanne Henkhause and Cindy Donaldson. The sopho- more class is, very proud of these girls. Yvonne Jenkins, the substitute, was also a cheerleader in her ninth grade year. To help with our expenses in the Junior and Senior year, the sophomore class has candy machines in the cafeteria. Candy is sold during the lunch hours and before classes. As the end of the second semester approaches, we are looking forward to our Junior Year. 112 FIRST ROW: Miclcie Ackerman, Shelby Acord, Carol Adams, Kenneth Allison, Patty Allen, William Ambrose SECOND ROW: Edna Baker, Tom Bartholomew, Barbara Bechel, Donna Beierman, Ron Beierman, Tom Benjey. Once you're established in your life's work, you'll probably hear a lot more about Olin Mathieson. A good many of you may have business with us, and a few of you may even come to work for us. There will be room because Olin Mathieson is growing. When Olin Industries, Inc., merged with the Mathieson Chemical Corporation in August 1954, they brought together the skills, facilities, and resources of two of the country's most rapidly expanding industrial organizations. We extend our best wishes to you. May the future bring you all you've hoped for and everything for which you have worked. OLIN MATHIESON 126 EAST ALTON, ILL.
