These educational programs were sponsored by Mr. George T. Wilkins. Superintendent of Public Instruction and under the supervision of Mr. Otis Keeler, Public Relations Director of the state office. The writing of the script and training of the students was supervised by the teachers of the Education department: Mrs. Mary O'Neal, Mrs. Marie Schrieber, Miss Angela Hahn, and Ronald Stoltz. They were assisted by Mr. Vic Sumnia, Director of KETC. Mr. William Hodge and Mr. Kenneth Bell assist- ed in making props for the show. Mr. Charles Pelan assisted in speech training of the students. The following students of the Business Education Department presented these scenes from our curric- ulum: Beverly Schuette. co-ordinator of the program; Larry Titsworth, Terry Walker, Darrell Wright in Typewriting Secretarial Office Practice Taking Dictation from Record Player Was Televised at KETC Secretarial Office Practice Taking Dictation from Tape Secretarial Office Practice Taking Dictation from Mrs. Schreiber General Business; Helen Schreier in Shorthand; Peggy Watson and Marlene Pruett in Clerical Office Practice; Mrs. Schrieber and her Secretarial Office Practice Class; and Ray Moore and Howard Whaley in Dis- tributive Education. Pictures of business education classrooms were also shown. Adult participants on the program were: Mr. Wilbur R. Trimpe, Superintendent of Schools of Madison County; Mrs. Mary O'Neal, Head of Business Education Department; Mrs. Marie Schreiber,Teach- er; Mr. Kermit Harden, Superintendent of Bethalto Community Unit No. 8; and Mrs. Patricia Mink Rath, State Supervisor of Distributive Education. Needless to say this was an outstanding ex- perience for students and teachers and a privilege, which was fully appreciated by the participants. Sales Demonstration for D.E. Miss Amelia Stallings and Mrs. Mary Kay Doody. has an enrollment of 182 students. Eighty freshman girls were enrolled in Home- making I, where they studied personality develop- ment, grooming, clothing selection and con- struction, nutrition, preparation of breakfast foods, etiquette, baby sitting, home nursing, and careers. Thirty-five girls took part in the Homemaking II curriculum, where they studied: Conservation of foods, meal planning and preparation for the family and social entertaining for friends; clothing and personal appearance, advanced sewing and buying techniques were stressed. Management of time and energy were studied in relation to the girl's own resources. A child care unit terminated the year's activities. Homemaking III with an enrollment of fifteen girls worked with children's clothing, infant care, home management, housing, foreign foods, and nutrition. The highlight of the year was a three- week exchange with the Industrial Arts classes. Electricity, metal working, drafting, and wood- working were viewed. Meanwhile the boys from the respective classes attended Homemaking class- es with studies in etiquette, care of clothing, and some food preparation. Fifty-three junior-senior boys and girls studied Family Living covering the problems of dating, engagement, and marriage. Industrial Arts The New Electricity Class was integrated into the Industrial Arts Department Curriculum during the 1960-61 school year. The units of instruction are to follow the scientific approach. The theory and principles of electricity will be studied in detail with the students performing experiments to prove to himself the basic fundamentals. Upon completion of the fund- amental training, the student will be required to design and construct suitable projects. The advanced metalworking class has a four area program. Each section has been designed to show the students the need for good workmanship, occupational information and to stress the all important necessity of working together as good citizens. The class is divided into four groups. 1r. Vollmar observes students operating the casting furnace. M r. Compis explains an electrical diagram to a group of students 11 A design, some paint and plenty of boys and girls and we have a mural. The boys paint the high spots. The Art Department has shown much prog- ress under the direction of their new instructor, Mr. William Hodge. They have tried their hand at sculpture, murals, all types of drawing and painting. Their latest creation is the making of their drapes, which turns the Art Room into a regular studio. The Girls' Chorus, under the direction of Mr. Earnest Opp, meets three periods a week,Mondays,Wednes- days, and Fridays. The girls who are to be members of the Glee Club are chosen from the two chorus classes. The boys' chorus was organized two years ago and is also under the direction of Mr. Opp. This year, for the first time, the boys are going on tour with the Band and Glee Club. Music The Boys' Chorus, a new organization, works hard to secure recognition in the music department. The girls enjoy their musical training. 13 English Drama helps us portray the thoughts and ideas of famous writers. No matter what occupation you may follow, you will need to be able to read, write, spell, follow directions given orally, and express your ideas clearly and effectively. These skills are, in short, the goals of the English department for its students. In addition, every individual should be able to fill his leisure hours con- structively as well as enjoyably, and to continue to grow mentally. An introduction to good reading in the high school years is also an important part of the English program. English I, II, and III are required of every student. In addition, every student should take either English IV (literature and writing), or English V (speech) in his senior year. Learning the tenses of verbs and using them correctly in sentences is a basic part of our English training. Foreign Latin, French and German are the foreign languages in our school. We were very lucky to get a language laboratory this year and it has been a great help both in teaching and learning of a new language. Miss Rainey, Mrs. Lentz, and Mr. Schwarz are our instructors. Language Learning the customs of people In foreign lands is an Interesting part of our study of foreign languages. Our new laboratory has speeded up the learning of new languages. i 5 Learning To Live DemocraticalljvSocial Studies Campaigning - Republicans Campaigning - Democrats 16 Making Those X's Into the Ballot Box The Physics class determines the coefficient of linear expansion of metals through experimentation. Physics is the science which examines more closely the everyday environment in which we live. It is the aim of the course to introduce the pupil to the fundamentals of this science and enable them to gain a command of its language concepts, mathematics, and uses. Mechanics, heat, sound, light, magnetism, electricity, and atomic physics are studied. Biology is a science dealing with the study of all living things. We begin this study with the lowest forms of animal life and follow with each higher order until finally we study the highest order, man. Through the study of plants, we become aware of the importance of the individual parts of a plant. Throughout all our study we see the im- portance of plants and animals to each other. Mr. Skelton helps in remembering the name and location of the bones of the body. i A STUDENT'S VIEWPOINT OF MATHEMATICS These math students demonstrate the equality of angles. High school math usually starts with a course in Algebra. Algebra is a subject in which we use letters rather than numbers. Geometry is a subject that requires a great deal of reasoning. A background of Geometry helps us in solving our everyday problems. Trigonometry and Solid Geometry are es- sential if one plans to enter the field of science or engineering. These subjects are challenging, but they are interesting and valuable. Submitted by: Larry Cruse Janice and James demonstrate the relationship of lines and the circle. i 8 This, girls, is the motor, says Mr. Logan. The purpose of our classroom and behind the wheel Driver Education is to help one, as a student, to understand that the most important part of driving is not the manual skill of operating an automobile but developing good sound attitudes toward safe driving. We also try to give the student an awareness of the responsibility that you undertake when you get behind the wheel of a car. The responsibility is not only to yourself, but also to your car and other people and their property. In conclusion we would like to help in some way to reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by carelessness brought about by the ignorance of today's motorist. Classroom instruction is a vital part of Driver Education. 19 Counseling Library Mr. Jones reviews test results. grades, and aptitudes with the students to guide them in further training for the careers they desire. This is the first time that the students of Civic Memorial have had the advantage of work- ing with a part-time counselor, Mr. Maurice Jones. Extensive testing for the various classes and counseling for the juniors and seniors have kept Mr. Jones very busy. Every student sometime during the day finds his way into the library either for refer- ence books, magazines or to find a book for a book report. Mrs. McGee, Mrs. Trimpe or a stu- dent librarian stands ready to help the students at all times. Students select their books to read from a cart full of new books. 20 Girls' Physical Education Volleyball, a team sport, is one of the winter activities of the Girls' Physical Education Department. The girls' physical education department play various team and individual sports during the school year. Some of the sports are: volley- ball, basketball, softball, and speedball. The individual sports are: tennis, modern dance, exercises, relays, and tumbling. The new look for the girls will be white blouses with navy blue shorts. The classes are under the direction of Mrs. Nina Freeman. 2 1 Some of the girls show their ability by building pyramids. Boy§? Physical Education In the Fall the boys run track and in the Spring play softball, while others may be playing tennis, soccer, lifting weights, working out on the trampoline, or even have a wrestling match. One of their favorite games is bombardment. During the year, a volleyball tournament was held, which was won by the second hour class. A basketball game was played in assembly between an all-star team from the morning and afternoon classes with the morning classes winning this championship game. All students have a chance to find at least one activity in which they like to participate. Some boys indulge in weight-lifting as a body builder. The trampoline appeals to all ages. 22 Spectator Staff FIRST ROW: Bill Shewmaker, Photographer; Bev Schuette. The staff is selected from the group of senior volunteers, who are interested in working with the yearbook. The editors and business managers work together through- out the year to make each succeeding year- book bigger and better than the preceding one. Upon the arrival of the Spectator in the spring, the staff holds an Autograph Party, an evening of fun—collecting autographs from students and faculty. The Spectator is one of the biggest undertakings of the students and takes the co-operation of everyone to produce a good book. The sponsors of the Spectator Staff are Mrs. Mary O'Neal, Miss Angela Hahn, and Mr. William Jones. The staff and sponsors appreciate the splendid aid and co-operation of the ad- ministrators, students, faculty and busi- nessmen, which helps us to have an out- standing yearbook. Representatives from each homeroom attend the meetings and report to the students the happenings of the meetings. The purpose of the Council is to promote social and educational development through democratic action. The council supervises the co-curricular award for seniors, conducts all school elections, and sponsors the Homecoming Parade. The class reunions are also sponsored by the Council. Money is made by checking coats at the basket- ball games. Good will, good sportsmanship, and friend- ship are promoted by the exchange visits the Council makes to other area schools. The Engineers’ Club at C.M. at- tempts to further the members' knowl- edge of engineering in its many phases. By doing this it hopes to help the mem- bers to decide whether to continue in the field of engineering. For those that plan to make a career of engineering, it de- scribes more thoroughly the different fields, such as mechanical, chemical, civil, and electrical engineering. In doing so this helps each individual to decide which field he is most interested in, and best suited for. The Eagles' Club is sponsored by the coaches, Clifford Hoppe and Bob Jones. The main activity sponsored by the club is the annual Athletic Banquet. This annual affair is held at the end of each school year to honor all of the athletes, who have par- ticipated in sports during the year. The Eagles' Club co-sponsors the dances after the basketball games. One of the projects of our club is to make contributions toward a Whirlpool bath for the forthcoming athletes of Civic Mem- orial. Give me an E!” This was a very familiar sound coming from the cheerleaders at the football and basketball games. There is nothing more exciting than the sound of cheering voices and the sight of bouncing cheerleaders, cheering the players on when the score is behind or praising the team with cheers w'hen they are ahead. Although the games did not always end w'ith C.M. as the victor, the spirit of the cheerleaders was undaunted. Only nine of the players had as much as two years' experience. The Eagles had five players receive honors. All five were selected for honor- able mention on the All-Conference Team: A1 Corcoran was selected for two positions, guard and fullback; Dennis Cooper, tackle; Sam Knight, tackle; D.M. Cooper, end; and Mike Bristow, guard. A1 Corcoran and Boyd Zimmerman were selected by the players as Co-Captains for the 1960 Civic Memorial Football Team. JUNIOR VARSITY The Junior Varsity Basketball team under the direction of Assistant Coach Edward Hartweger have showed great signs of improvement. The boys are looking forward to the Freshman-Sophomore tournament at Jerseyville, with high hopes of coming out on top. Baseball 60 The Eagles had a successful season in baseball winning the first Mid- Western Conference Championship in the history of the school. The Eagles beat all conference opponents twice with the exception of Highland and Madison, splitting with each team. The Eagles beat a fine Cohakia team 1-0 and 7-6, Roxana 4-3 and 3-0, Dupo 12-3 and 1-1 tie, since this game was called due to darkness. The Eagles ended the season with a 15-1 win over Jerseyville, a non- conference team. The success of the team was partly creditable to the hitting of the team as a whole and the fine pitching by Don Florini and Dan Milligan. Team spirit was one factor that guided the team to a conference championship, losing only two games in the regular season. Twenty-one of the twenty-eight boys were hold-overs from last year’s team. Here, things go from bad to worse as Mr. Droopers, an English teacher, and Biff's phyches interchange. This led to a lot of laughs and good entertain- ment. You should each take pride in your accomplishment during the last four years. Some of you will undoubtedly look back with a sigh of relief that your high school career is over, while others will leave with a certain feeling of regret. All of you will go out into a world filled with new and challenging problems. It is the hope of the faculty and myself that with the knowledge you have gained you will be able to meet your problems in a forthright and confident attitude and make worth-while contributions to our society. I would like to also ask you not to forget your Alma Mater. You leave behind many educational problems for your school to solve. It is impossible for the school to progress without the help of the citizens of its community. You are now one of those citizens. It is necessary for you to maintain a high interest in order to understand and advise the future course of Bethalto Community Unit 8 to make it a better school. Our transportation system consists of nine school buses and two station wagons, that transport over 1600 students. This includes the Kindergarten and Physically Handicapped. Drivers are selected for dependability, good habits, unquestionable character, and their willingness to follow the instructions and requirements of the Superintendent and Board of Education. We expect our drivers to be courteous to all drivers on the highway. We emphasize to each driver that the discipline on their bus must be good at all times. All drivers are greatly appreciative ofthestu- Ike Rhine, Director of Transportation, Geraldine Suhre, Vernita Lasseter, Ronald Stolz, Mildred Leggitt. Agnes Winslow. Careful records are kept as to drivers, buses, routes, places of pick-up, time schedules, accidents, traffic violations, operating expenses for each bus, the condition of tires, warning signals used on buses, changes in routes, and any mechanical failure that may arise from day today on any bus or station wagon. Each driver is held responsible for these records each day, and must make regular reports to the office of the Director of Transportation. It then becomes our ob- ligation to make all needed changes, replacements,or repairs as they occur from day to day. Submitted by Ike Rhine Director of Transportation Dubbelde, Eugene Suessen.
