Just what is a good cheerleader? A good cheerleader should be a person who can take constructive criticism: be able to work with other people; have good rhythm; lxx’y control; co-ordination and grace; good grooming: a good academic student: and a leader of young people. All the cheerleaders would like to take this opportunity to thank the students at C. M. High School for making it possible for them to have new uniforms this year. Some people seem chiefly occupied with attaining ends, others are principally concerned with receiving experiences. We acknowledge these differences by describing some people as practical, others as imaginative; or by saying that there is a great difference, in the same person between the practical and the imaginative ways of looking at life. Certainly both attitudes are important and necessary. We must learn to cultivate an ability to achieve something in life, to stand firmly on our own feet. But we have also come to understand that man cannot live by this alone. To be practical is quite important but we also need to cultivate an imaginative attitude toward life as well. One of the most important human activities for encouraging the growth of spiritual and imaginative is music. On definite occasions, no matter how simple our lives may be, we have realized that there are certain facts beyond the eating and drinking, the walking and the talking that give us a sense of how great and strange and beautiful our existence is. The Girls of C.M. are a gifted group who have made the attempt to understand this part of existence through the medium of music and many times I am sure have sensed the true worth of life. The school music program is developed to enrich the character, health, dexterity skills, vocational skills, and social skills of the students involved and to provide happiness, citizenship, spiritual develop- ment, and patriotism to the listening audiences. Each year the High School band must meet all of these challenges along with the mastery of their instru- ments, and the ability to think and reason quickly and accurately. Because of the high standards set in the C.M. music department seventy-five per cent of the students enrolled are either on the honor roll or the high honor roll. The performances given by the school band at football games, basketball games, student assemblies, and civic parades are not done for the sake of performance but as a test of the group's understanding the problems involved, the demands made upon them and finally the solution — the performance. On November 21, at eight o’clock, in the File Theater, the curtains were pulled for the presen- tation of The Family Nobody W anted, a heart-warming play about a family that was adopted into the hearts and house of Reverend and Mrs. Doss. In spite of all the work of rehearsing lines, rebuilding scenery, mounting lights, preparing make- up, tickets, advertising, and properties, the play was a lot of fun. It gave us a chance to get to know our fellow classmates through working together and helped to develop a greater appreciation for the theater. The bull, Detective O'Finn, was lured into a china shop, the apartment of six old maids, when the old ladies fell hopelessly in love with him. Being a detective of homicide, the only logical thing that brought O'Finn to the ladies' apartment was a good murder. The ladies oblig- ingly offered their services. This led to a good mystery and lots of laughs. LEFT TO RIGHT: Nita Clark, Sue White, Madge Zimmermann, Betty Parsons, Genelle McGaughey, David Sheary, Dan Swarringim, Geraldyne Marr. BUSINESS OFFICES - CAFETERIA The services of the workers in our business offices may escape the notice of the average student, but without their able assistance, our school would not function very well. We find them willing and able to assist us at all times with our many and varied problems. The Bethalto Community Unit 8 has six cafeterias, which serve an average of 15,700 pupils per day. These are operated in cooperation with the State and Federal governments through a reimbursement plan which pro- vides five cents for each Type A lunch served with milk. If additional milk is sold , there is a reimbursement of three cents for each bottle, providing the school sells the milk for three cents. The Federal Government also furnishes the cafeteria with surplus commodity foods from time to time. The Type A lunch must consist of a meat or other protein dish, a vegetable or fruit, butter, bread, and milk. The menus are made out the third week of each month for the following month, by the cafeteria di rector, Miss Stallings, the school nurse, Mrs. Metzger, and Mrs. Taylor, the chief cook. NOT PICTURED; David Transportation plays an important part in the daily life of the stu- Schmittling, Amos Jack, dents of our school. Approximately 1,550 pupils in the unit are trans- ported each day in eight buses, with each bus traveling an average of 10,500 miles per month. Two station wagons transport Special Education pupils. Drivers are carefully chosen and they attempt to make our pupil transportation efficient, safe, and economical.
