SENIOR SPECTATOR STAFF JUNIOR SPECTATOR STAFF The Spectator Staff with Mrs. Mary O'Neal as their sponsor, works diligently all year. The staff is composed of members elected by the senior class. In the fall, they are hard at work soliciting ads, taking pictures, and selling subscriptions to the Spectator. Finally, the day arrives in May; the Spectator is finished and the staff sponsors the annual Autograph Party. Their work has ended; they have received their well earned congratulations and they make way for the Junior Staff to succeed them. Juniors, who wish to become members of the Spectator Staff, volunteer their services and aid the seniors in many ways in producing their yearbook. This also serves as a training period for the junior members. The Staff members for the 1960 Spectator will be selected from these volunteers. Future Teachers of America FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA FUTURE NURSES OF AMERICA The Future Teachers of America, sponsored by Mrs. Marie Schreiber, is a rapidly growing organization of C. M. Its purpose is to interest students in the teaching field and give them a chance to experience the work of teachers. They have plenty of chances to do this as they help the teachers grade papers, type tests, and record grades-. An F.T.A. member can often be seen selling pencils or wrapping jelly as these are their money-making projects throughout the year. The climax of the year's work is a chance for each senior member to teach the grade of his choice in our elementary schools. Sick? The F.N.A. members give their advice and help to anyone who comes to the nurse's office with an ache 01 a pain. Planning for the future, they try their hand at all phases of the nursing field. Many doctors and nurses are assisted by the members of the club at the various im- munization programs held during the year. They learn by participating and observing. With the help of a very fine and energetic sponsor, Mrs. Viola Metzger, the club remains very active during the school year. The members hear many interesting and instructive discussions of the advantages and disadvantages of their chosen field. Faculty members of the various schools of nursing from the surrounding area attend some of the monthly meetings and discuss their occupations with the inquisitive students. The F.N.A. is a club of service, not a profit-making organization. They offer their services to the hospitals in the area and supply Christmas toys and games for an orphanage. However, they do try to maintain a small balance for their homecoming float, annual field trip, and various other expenses. The club furthers one's interest and knowledge in the business woiid and its activities. The meetings stress the personal qualities and skills so necessary for success in the business world of today and tomorrow. To make money for their activities, the club sells Christmas cards, all occasion cards, and stationery. Richard Sandbach, as president of the club, and Mrs. Mary O'Neal, as Co-ordinator, had a busy year guiding and developing the students enrolled in Distributive Education into the techniques of better selling. Especial attention was given to the develop- ment of social traits so necessary in salesmanship. The club is a member of the State, Area, and National Distributive clubs. It has received area and state recognition. As their president, Richard Sandbach, served as Area President, Publicity Director for the State and a national delegate to Deca. With seven juniors and three seniors, which gave experience to the team, the Eagles did very well considering the tough schedule. With Juniors, Milligan and Kronable, and Seniors, Kutter and Dressendorfer, the Eagles had scoring punch with good rebounding. The two most impressive games were against Wood River and Roxana. The Eagles coming out on the short end of a 59 to 56 decision to Wood River and winning 55 to 48 against a strong Roxana club. SECOND ROW: Bill Shaw, Gary Kessler, David Sheary, Genelle McGaughey, Dan Swarrlnglm, and Lyndall Tarrant. TIMEOUT FOR GINGER Time Out For Ginger was presented by the Junior Class at File Gymnasium in Bethalto on Friday, November 21. Sandra Aghetta was the youngost daughter, the athletically-minded Ginger of the play's title. She had opportunity to snort Oh, parents! contemptuously from time to time. Terri Stotler as Joan Carol and Janet Klopmeier as Jeannie Carol were seen as sisters, with Genelle McGaughey as the understanding mother. The most famous scene of this New York hit occurred when the father of the family came home after a football game to tell the tale of how his daughter. Ginger, scored a touchdown. David Sheary, attired in a coonskin coat, acted this part realistically. Bill Shaw and Lyndall Tarrant was seen as the two contrasting beaus of the daughters in the family, Gary Kessler was the indignant high school principal, Dan Swarringim was the worried head of the father's business, and Evelyn Pelan was the family's loyal servant who was beside herself with enthusiasm over Ginger's powers on the football field. Assisting Mrs. Edna Tucker in the directing of this play was Janet Powell and Madge Zimmerman, with Gary Cain and Jacdc Cooper in charge of production. Advertising-Time Out For Ginger. Hoard Of Education NED BOND, President MILTON WOFFORD, Vice-President JOHN H. SMITH, Secretary HAROLD ALBERS, Assistant Secretary CHARLES NAVE Superintendent - Your Superintendent Speaks Congratulations to the Graduates of 1959. You have com- pleted a milestone in your life and are at the threshold of new experiences. You are leaving your school friends and going forth to form new friendships. The changes, regardless of your choice of vocation or the seeking of further training, will be many and varied and my sincere hope is that you are capable and trained to cope with these situations. I know that you have been well-trained and supervised during your classroom experiences but the measure of a man or woman is his or her reaction when supervision is removed and you are alone to solve your problems. I sincerely hope that Civic Memorial has developed your ability to recognize problems; trained you in methods of solving them; and that you have the will and determination to carry out the right solutions. I also hope you have and can keep an eager, inquisitive and open mind, so that you can adjust to an everchanging world. I would like to urge you to assume your responsibilities and duties not only on local but on state, national and international levels as well. The reputation and future success of Civic Memorial depends upon the continuing and future success of its alumni, so may I suggest that each of you do your utmost to keep Civic Memorial the Best School in the State of Illinois. No other stage in human development involves as many changes — physical, psychological, and social—as do the four years spent in high school. The Class of '59 were freshmen when I came to Civic Memorial High School in 1956. Now we are both saying good-bye. I hope that they are leaving with as many fond memories as I. Bethalto Community Unit 8 can well be proud of its wonderful high school faculty and the support given it by the public. I shall always have a deep and abiding interest in the progress of Civic Memorial High School.
