Page 42 On the Marquee! CLUB ACTIVITIES The Spectator Staff “The Spectator Is Here!” A sigh of relief is uttered by the Staff, “Thank goodness, we made it!” After a humerous assembly, ad selling, taking pictures, collecting money for pictures, distributing pictures, and selling subscriptions are finished, the Staff puts all these together to help make the Spectator a success. The final joy of the year is making the books balance and then putting the Autograph Party underway. With the help of the fifteen Junior class members, who are competing for positions on the next year’s Staff, and the co-operation of the Senior Staff; “Finis” to the ‘58 yearbook has now been written. Student Council If you should attend one of good old C. M.’s home basketball games and check your coat for one thin dime, you are helping to support the Student Council. We, of the Student Council, earn money for the organization by checking coats and by having our annual Lost and Found Sale in assembly. This sale is an auction, at the end of the school year, of all the lost objects found on the school property that have not been claimed. Under the leadership of our principal, John Stewart, the Student Council assists in student government and attempts to make a more enjoy- able place for all. The members try to set an example of good behavior and dress for the rest of the students to follow. The Student Council is composed of three members from each senior high class and one representative from each home room. The Eaglet Staff The Eaglet Staff publishes a bi-monthly paper to inform the students and faculty about all of the news and events at Civic Memorial High School. The paper, which is mainly a senior project, has a staff of about thirty-five persons. The Eaglet was first published in 1950 under the supervision of Mr. Charles Sing. The paper is now sponsored by Mr. John Bailey. Dramatics Club A STAR IS BORN A bright new star at Civic Memorial this year is the Dramatics Club. This club, under the direc- tion and sponsorship of Mrs. Edna Tucker, has presented numerous plays throughout the year for the general public, and for the club members. The Dramatics Club is open only to Seniors, and to those Juniors, who have earned the right to belong through participating in the Junior Play. The purposes of the Dramatics Club are chiefly to promote interest in the dramatic arts in this area, and to provide entertainment and a chance to gain more dramatic skill for its members. The Drama- tics Club entered a play in the speech contest. The Dramatics Club does not yet have one main project, but it does have several varied ones —such as selling snowcones and crackerjacks at the football and basketball games. National Honor Society Scholarship, leadership, service, and character are the foundation of the National Honor Society, which is composed of eighteen Seniors and twenty- tive Juniors. Invitations for membership are issued each fall by the sponsor, Mrs. Florence McGee, and her assistant, Mrs. Mae Rhine. Formal initiation of Junior pledge members takes place each spring. The sale of Homecoming mums is the only money-making project of this organization. Its main function is to encourage improvement in scholastic achievements. Library Staff “Chaucer, Byron, Mark Twain — we have them all.” Our library is full of famous personages. Won’t you come in and let our staff help you find them? This is the second year of the regular meetings of the library staff. With their aid, Mrs. Florence McGee and Mrs. Mae Rhine have made our library one of which we can be proud. Science Club The Science Club is composed of students who have taken two years of science courses or who are enrolled in their second year course. Its mem- bers complete individual projects by the end of the year. Its sponsor is Mr. Victor Dubblede. The Latin Club The Latin Club consists of students taking Latin or who have taken it in the past. Its money-making project is the sale of candy during the Christmas season. The Latin Club has two annual events, a potluck and initiation in November and a tour of St. Louis in the spring. The club is sponsored by Miss Dorothy Rainey. Page 43 Future Teachers of America The Future Teachers of America is a club that enables high school students to gain a better knowledge of what teaching is actually like. It gives you some idea of what qualities are needed in order to enjoy the profession of teaching. Teaching for a day is a program that enables the Senior members to teach any grade they choose for one day. They are assigned to a big sister or brother who counsels with them and guides them throughout the day. This program also gives them a background for some of their college courses. In looking at the social aspect of the club, we find they have a Holiday Tea every year dur- ing the Christmas holidays. The Tea is held for the former members of the club and at which time ideas are exchanged by the students on the subject of teaching and college. Funds are gained by the sale of pencils and bake sales that are held throughout the year. The club is sponsored by Mrs. Marie Schreiber. Future Nurses of America “I’m a future nurse, may I take your pulse?’’ If you should hear this phrase, don’t be alarmed it’s only an F. N. A. member checking to see that everyone at C. M. is healthy. This club helps with immunization shots, works in the nurse’s office and does numerous other jobs. The sponser of the F. N. A. is the school nurse, Mrs. Viola Metzger. Future Employees of America What qualifications must I have to succeed in the business world? What skills do I need? What is automation doing to the business world and what does it do to my chance for a business job? How do I get a job? These are only a few of the questions that the monthly meetings of the F. E. A. attempt to help solve for their members. Through movies, speakers, panel discussions, brainstorming and buzz sessions, these questions are highlighted with the hope that each member finds the solution to his own particular problem. The F. E. A., composed of students interested in a business career, sell Christmas cards and football scorecards to sponsor their activities throughout the year. The club sponsors are Mrs. Olive Brawn and Mrs. Mary O’Neal. Fufure Distributors of America A State Officer was our goal this year and we succeeded! Bea Tucker was elected Area II Secre- tary and later became State Secretary. How can I sell more merchandise? How can I get along with all types of customers? What future do I have in retailing? How can I be of more value to my employer? These are the prob- lems of the members of the F. D. A., and they attempt to find solutions to such problems through their club programs during the year. The F. D. A. participates in the Area II Conference and the State Leadership Conference each year. They sponsor the Workbook and School Store throughout the year to pay their conference fees and their Annual Employee Banquet which is held each year in April. Mrs. Mary O’Neal, D. E. Coordinator, spon- sors the Club and its activities. Future Homemakers of America “YOU MUST HAVE BEEN A BEAUTIFUL BABY, ‘CAUSE BABY, LOOK AT YOU NOW!’’ This is the theme of the new contest created espec- ially for choosing the cutest Senior baby boy. It was accepted with such enthusiasm that we are sure it will be an annual affair. Among the many services performed by this club are The Sweetheart Dance in February; Christmas Givings, which include donating to the United Christmas Fund, visiting orphans and older people; Christmas caroling; Mother-Daughter Ban- quet, and the Style Show in the spring. The girls work hard all year to be able to sponsor all these different activities. They sell hot dogs, coffee, hot chocolate, and potato chips at the basketball and football games. In short, the F.H.A. has a well-rounded activity, program for the girls, while at the same time pro- viding them with the fundamentals of home mem- bership, womanhood and motherhood. Industrial Arts The purpose of the club is to prepare the members to take their places as mature and re- sponsible citizens in a functioning democracy, to promote the programs of an industrial, cultural, intercultural, social and educational nature. The Industrial Arts Club’s constitution was changed during the 57-58 school year to enable freshmen shop students to join the club. This past year the club sponsored a basketball throw at the Bethalto Homecoming and a Slave Day project. Mr. James Compis is sponsor of the club. Varsity Club A letter, that’s what you need to belong to this club. The distinguished sponsor of this active club is Mr. John Logan, coach of basketball and cross country. The problem of wiping out the deficit of the football lights is our main goal. To do this, we hold an annual basketball game played by the Varsity team versus the Faculty. Both the team and the faculty look forward to this annual event. Our social activities are the annual initiation of the new lettermen, and the athletic banquet for all the boys, who have participated in athletics during the year. Page 44 The Hi-Y Club The Hi-Y Club is one of the service clubs of our school and community. Each year, our club participates in the “Youth and Government” program. Our representatives are sent to Springfield and with other club members take over the legislature and pass laws, which are presented by the various clubs. The Hi-Y sponsors various dances throughout the year and ends its social season with Twirp Week in February. Girls’ Athletic Association To start the year, the ninety-one members of the G. A. A. were hostesses to a Play Day? Throughout the year, they participated in bowling, basketball, softball, volleyball, tumbling and danc- ing. They complete the year with the annual Mother-Daughter Banquet. The club is under the leadership and guidance of Mrs. Martha Swann. Pep Squad The members of the Pep Squad back up the cheerleaders by cheering with them at the Football and Basketball games. It is sponsored by Mrs. Edith Burmester. Cheerleaders The Cheerleaders are elected by the student body. They lead the cheering at the Football and Basketball games. They also lead the Pep Assem- blies and plan social hours after the games. They are sponsored by Mrs. Edith Burmester. Chorus — Glee Club — Band “THERE WILL BE A SPECIAL MEETING FOR ALL MEMBERS OF THE BAND. GLEE CLUB, AND SEXTETTE AT 7:00 IN THE MUSIC ROOM.” Mr. Opp is the speaker; the members of the band, glee club, and sextette, the listeners; and the subject is another rehearsal for the concert tomorrow night. You will find many of these last- minute rehearsals going on all over the place, as well as, people hunting for music, instruments, batons, and, of course, the sextette accompanist. Again this year, as last year, we have two sex- tettes composed of twelve outstanding members of the glee club, which form our double sextette. A very important part of our marching band are the letter girls, who add not only talent to it, but also interest and “eye-appeal.” These groups mentioned above combine to form the largest club in our school, all of which are under the capable direction of Mr. Ernest Opp. During the year, they perform many times at CM, as well as at other schools in the area, and on tour. They do an excellent job of entertaining all ages from the small fry right on up to the older folks. The school is proud of this organization and are glad, when after they have competed with other schools at district and state music contest: they come home with a good share of the rewards. Engineers Club The newly formed Engineers Club consists of a group of boys, ranging from the freshmen through the seniors, who are interested in engineering. All fields of engineering are introduced to give each member a preview of what can be in store for him. The officers of the club are: Bill Landers, Presi- dent; Richard Williams, Vice-president; Larry Taylor, Secretary; and Mickey Henkhaus, Treas- urer. The club has nine crews of five members. Each crew has its own captain, lieutenant, and secretary. The captains of the crews are as fol: lows: No. 1. Glen Eberhart, No. 2. Tom Carter, No. 3. Harlen Shaw, No. 4. Mick Shaw, No. 5. Bill Landers, No. 6. Claude Endicott, No. 7. Fred Vogel, No. 8. Mike Keefe, No. 9, Eddie Cazaad. The club has intentions of joining a national organization of Junior Engineers. It is sponsored by Mr. Thomas Griesbaum. Radio Club The Radio Club, comprised of forty-five boys under the direction of Mr. Thomas Griesbaum, is another of our newly-formed clubs. The purposes of the Radio Club are: (1) to give introductory knowledge of radio to those not fami- liar with it, (2) assist those who are more advanced in industry, electronics, and technology, (3) to assist anyone interested in ham-broadcasting to set up and operate his own station, and (4) to set up a school station. The officers are: Meredith Sebastian, President; Jerry Albright, Vice-President; George Drury, Treasurer; and John Hickerson, Secretary. The crew leaders are Jim Grindstaff, Tom Zivic, Dennis McKey, Charles Vinyard, Bill Shaw, Dennis Doolen, Bob Webster, Bill Landers, and Dennis Pointer. Uuuuuuuggghh!!!!!! Three to Get Ready!!!!!! Page 55 On The Marquee! ATHLETIC EVENTS Football “Autery charges through for a first down. Tackled by Dale! Tackled by Howard!” These words were heard frequently during the 1957 football season as the Eagles came up with a four win, four loss and a tie record. Though plagued by injuries, they made a creditable showing in every game. The players as well as the coaches feel that their best game was the first one of the season, against Wood River, when the squad was intact. Cross Country If, during September or October, you passed the school and saw a group of very tired-looking boys go jogging past, you probably saw our cross-country team. These boys, under the direction of Coach Logan, traveled to the surrounding schools to compete for honors. Led by Ron Coy, a new boy at C.M. this year, they won six out of seven dual meets and placed well in the Troy Invitational and Midwestern Conference meets. Basketball The 1957-58 basketball team, under the direction of Coach Logan and led by Rich Knoche turned in a fair 12-15 season. With the help of a couple of sophomores, moved up from Junior Varsity, the squad won almost every non-conference game. The conference games were the stumbling blocks. The conference games were usually close, hard-fought games with our team coming out on the short end. The league leaders had many a good scare, but we could not seem to get enough pep into our rallies. A very promising Junior Varsity, coached by Mr. Edward Hartweger, had a very good record. These boys are expected to bolster the team next year. Both coaches and students are looking forward to the coming year with high hopes. Baseball The ’57 baseball season, though not one of our best, was not altogether a loss. The Juniors and Sophomores played in a number of games and gained experience for the next year. With Mike Mead’s timely hitting and Jerry Dale’s skillful fielding behind the Eagles’ star hurler, Don Emde, the ’58 season was one full of victories for the Eagles. Track The track team of 1957-’5S with the added im- petus of experience gained the year before, had a fine season. With Bill Kutter, broad jumping, Jerry Dale running the hurdles and pole vaulting, the team won a good percentage of their meets. THE SCOREBOOK SAYS Basketball Staunton 42 C. M. 44 Jerseyville 49 C. Talking It Over! Green Valley Junior-Senior Prom '57 Page 64 On the Marquee! SOCIAL ACTIVITIES HOMECOMING Tense excitement prevailed during the various activities at the sixth annual Homecoming Cele- bration on October 25 at C.M.H.S. Although hampered somewhat by the bitter cold, the parade elevated the spirits of students, faculty, and alumni. Clever themes, ingeniously executed, inspired the Eagles to defeat Western Military Academy’s cadets. The flu bug, a biting wind, and a rugged W.M.A. team combined to make a tough opponent, but the high flying Eagles soared to a 13 to 7 victory. As an added feature of the day, the Student Council sponsored a reunion for the class of 1952. Amid shimmering decorations of silver and blue, the queen and her court were individually spot- lighted under a cascade of stars and a gigantic blue moon. A silver crown cradled in a sparkling moon and table centerpieces of tiny angels fur- thered the illusion of a celestial paradise. The crowning of a new queen, Miss June Schmidt, marked the end of a perfect day of homecoming festivities and the beginning of Miss Schmidt’s reign as Sports Queen. After an impressive recessional, Queen June and her royal court joined the assembled throng in dancing under star-sprinkled “Blue Moonbeams.” “Who Dunit?” A mystery-comedy was presented by the Junior Class on November 15, 1957 at File Gymnasium. In classic detective style, the leading character, a mystery writer, rounds up all the suspects as he tries to outwit an archangel and thus discover his murderer. The role of Alexander Arlington, well-known mystery writer, was played by Gerald Davis; and that of Michael, the Archangel, by John Hickerson. Members of Arlington’s household, rounded up in turn as suspects included Annie, the Maid; Harry, the butler-gardener; Miss Jenkins, the capable secretary; and Andrew Arlington, the nephew. These characters were portrayed by Linda Wesley, Dennis Pointer, Jean Miller, and Ronald Davies. Others who became implicated were Alexander Arlington’s fiancee, played by Donna Zimmerman, her muscular boy friend, played by Richard Sand- bach; and Flo Baker, friend of Andrew Arlington, played by Mary Morrow. A neat bit of celestial deduction clears up the question: “Who Dunit?” in a humorous surprise ending. Green Valley A comedy-fantasy in three acts, by Frank Wat- tron, was presented in the File Gymnasium on April 25. The action of the entire play was in front of Eldon Berry’s cabin in the fabulously fertile Green Valley. Senior Class Members turned into hillbillies, spirits, and old-time settlers in the performance of this play. In true Berry tradition and as part of the costuming, bonnets, overalls, vests, boots and beards were all in evidence. For a hundred years the Berry family has owned Green Valley, but in the opening scene of the play we learned that Eldon, the only living Berry, was about to lose it to the unscrupulous hands of Tobias J. Everheel. Stirred by the threat to their valley Eldon’s ancestors came back to fight, to laugh, to love, and above all to help save it. The ancestral roles were as follows: Ruth Ann Schoeneweis as sharp-eyed Granny Berry; David McGaughey as peppery, fun-loving Grandpaw Ber- rv; Norman Halliday, Robert Stieglitz; Tom Mc- Carthy and Joe Wright as the stalwart brothers, Jeb, Calhoun, Ransome, and J. D. and Anna Aug- ustine as Prudence Berry. Of the Live Ones, Tom Berry had the lead as Eldon, the farmer with the “green thumb.” The part of Primrose Stokes, native girl in love with Eldon, was played by Donna Smith. Don Emde turned Villain in the role of Tobias J. Everheel, the land grabbing sharpster. Supporting roles were Tinker Smith, the perplexed tractor driver, by William Landers, also Martha Mears, member of the local Historical Society, by Barbara Oettel and Eva Friese, creamery maid, by Paula Nicolet. As peace was restored to Green Valley, Shade Stokes and the displaced settlers returned to their homes. The settlers were as follows: Rufe Thomas, good-hearted native by Donald Beeman; Sarah, his wife by June Johnson; Hip Cooley, a dispos- sessed farmer by Donald Tarrant; Mamie, his wife by Jackie Webb; and Shade Stokes, Prim’s father. Junior-Senior Prom The Senior Class of 1957 entered the sea of romance as honored guests at the annual Junior- Senior Prom when C.M.’s gym was transformed into Neptune’s Kingdom. Below calm aqua waves, they swam to the music of Walt Schlemer and nibbled the leaves of undersea plants. Sunken treasure, gilded fish, deep- sea divers, and a huge pink shell enchanted the depths of that watery place. Queen Aphrodite, Joan Bria, and King Neptune, Dave Cain, granted every wish of their subjects while members of the Junior and Senior class, invited guests and faculty, enjoyed the wonders of being a fish as they collected “MEMORIES IN MIST.” Page 65 Page 66 FADS AND STYLES OF 58 The Big Snow. A world of satellites, missiles, rockets, jets, automation, and world conflict is your future. We sincerely hope that your four years here have given you the background, the insight, the attitudes, the courage, and the ability to cope with your world. Your teachers have trained, counseled and guided you: To think for yourself; the methods of solving problems; to work together; to be dependable and responsible; to be physically fit; and to live in a social world. The Board of Education and the administrators have given you a modern, progressive, well-rounded curriculum from which you could choose to prepare yourself for the career you preferred. Your future is yours to do with as you will but, we, at Civic Memorial will be wishing you Success and Happiness as you solve the problems of the world. Page 69 KERMIT HARDEN Assistant Superintendent of Community Unit No. 8 Those of us who completed our schooling during the last quarter- century felt that we had witnessed great and fantastic changes in the world about us during that time. Our generation saw the advent of the supersonic jet plane, the atomic and hydrogen bombs, that one-eyed mon- ster, television, and the anti-biotic wonder drugs. Compared with the changes that are destined to be made in our lives during the next 25 years, these de- velopments will seem small and in- significant indeed. Manned space ships are just around the corner. Fully automated factories will be commonplace. Most major diseases are certain to be conquered. Life expectancy will continue to increase. The horizon is unlimited and defies even the imagination. Have you prepared to take your place in tomorrow’s world? Have you laid a foundation of the basic know- ledge and skills that will enable you to keep up with the rapid changes that are being made in your world? Or will you be left behind, trying to get by on yesterday’s knowledge in tomorrow’s world? The choice has been yours. SHELTON C.
