Everything in the Lost and Found Depart- ment, which hasn’t been claimed, is sold to the highest bidder. The Student Council is composed of three elected representatives from each class and also non-voting home-room representatives. Under the leadership of Mr. John Stewart, this organization sets up rules and regulations for the Student body and conducts all-school elections. The Student Council sponsors the Homecoming Parade and the coat-check at basketball games. Future Nurses of America IT IS TIME FOR THE IMMUNIZATION PRO- GRAM AGAIN. Several of our future nurses will be absent from school to help with the work. They go to the different grade schools in the area to assist in giving shots to the children. This is just one of the ways in which the girls are being taught about the work they expect to do in the future. They take tours through different hospitals in the area to see how they operate. Latin Club “I’LL TAKE ONE OF EACH KIND”. Each kind of what? Why, the Latin Club’s candy, of course. Each Christmas, 87 Eager Beavers get out to sell candy for the Latin Club. With some of the profits from this adventure, they have a field trip each spring. In the fall, they use some of it to initiate the new members at their annual potluck. Almost every Latin student joins this club. Their sponsor is Miss Dorothy Rainey. Future Distributors of America EMPLOYER-EMPLOYEE BANQUET. Who are those well-dressed young men and cute girls escort- ing those prosperous businessmen to the cafeteria for a banquet? Glad you are interested. They are members of the F.D.A. Club showing their appreci- ation to their “Bosses” for providing them with jobs during the past year. Oh! Look! there is Stan Cox, President of the Club and Vice President of Area II escorting his Boss, Mr. Robert Klein and Mrs. Mary O’Neal, the Co-ordinator to the head table. Stan must be M.C. tonight. Only students enrolled in Distributive Edu- cation have the privilege of belonging to the club and it has 100 per cent membership every year. The club members have the privilege of plan- ning and participating in an Area Meeting with the Wood River, Alton and Belleville clubs and four of the members attend the State Leadership Confer- ence in Springfield each February. Their money-making activities are running a school store and selling contacts, a telephone direc- tory of the students. Their club activities are securing business and outstanding speakers to further their training and education in Retailing. THE DEADLINE IS FRIDAY! Will they make it? This is the question that puzzles the Eaglet Staff when the paper is due. This bi-weekly paper, which is mainly a senior project, has a staff of about seventy people. All of them, editors, re- porters, typists, and printers rush to get their as- signments in, so the paper can be printed on time. The Eaglet contains a variety of news and spe- cial events. Everything that happens around CM can be found in an issue of the Eaglet. Mrs. Smart, the Eaglet Sponsor, has her re- porters working around the clock so they can meet the deadline. Future Employees of America ORDER YOUR CHRISTMAS CARDS TODAY! That is the “theme song” of the F.E.A. They work very hard during the fall months selling their cards because their activities depend upon the amount of money they can make through this project. Their hopes for this year are to buy another “Football Light” and a record player for the Busi- ness Education Department. Any student enrolled in Business Education may become a member of this Club. They are in- terested in learning more about business, the op- portunities for them in business and how to secure jobs when they graduate. Their monthly meetings are planned around interesting speakers, educational movies and panel discussions. Mrs. Mary O’Neal and Mrs. Olive Brawn are Co-sponsors of the F.E.A. Mrs. O’Neal assists the officers in the planning of the meeting, while Mrs. Brawn assists in the financial affairs of the club. The Spectator Staff WILL THE SPECTATOR COME OUT ON TIME? Everyone waits anxiously to hear “THE SPECTATOR IS HERE.” The Spectator Staff works hard all year to make this year’s Spectator the best one yet. Ad-sellers cover the area selling ads to the businessmen to help pay for their books. With the aid of their sponsor, Mrs. Mary O’Neal, Senior Members of the Staff and the three Junior Members write articles, take pictures, sell subscriptions, collect money for pictures, and do any work that is necessary to accomplish the dif- ficult task of producing a book. The typists held to get all the ads and material ready for the printers. With hard work and crossed fingers, the Spec- tator Staff tries to beat the deadline. Hi-Y “YOUTH IN GOVERNMENT.” This is the motto of our Hi-Y, which is a service club of our school. Its goal is to serve the school and the com- munity. Our club participates each year in the “Youth in Government” program. Our representatives are sent to Springfield and with other club members take over the legislature and pass laws which are presented by the various clubs. The Hi-Y sponsors the Friendship Dance in the fall; Twirp Week in February and other recre- ational activities throughout the year. 33 Future Teachers of America “TEACHER FOR A DAY.” That is the prize offered by the F.T.A. to its senior members. On one day a year, they are given the opportunity to teach any grade they choose. The purpose of the F.T.A. is to stimulate and foster an interest in teaching. Various programs throughout the year tell of the importance of teach- ing and stresses the need for more teachers. Under the direction of Mrs. Marie Schrieber, the F.T.A. has sponsored a pencil machine and bake sales to make money. Girls' Athletic Association “STEP RIGHT UP FOLKS, THE SHOW IS ABOUT TO START. Come one, come all — the G.A.A. Carnival is about to begin.” The annual Carnival is the G.A.A.’s main event. Approxi- mately eighty girls take part in the active sports. Mrs. Martha Swann sponsors the girls as they play basketball, volleyball, softball, tumbling, and bowl. Cheerleaders “READY-O, LET’S GO!” begins all of our cheers. C.M.’s six Cheerleaders are elected by the student body, two members from each class. The girls cheer for football and basketball games, plan social hours, and promotes sportsmanship among the fans. The girls are sponsored by Mrs. Martha Swann. The Pep Squad “GO! YOU EAGLES!” — “FIGHT! TEAM FIGHT!” Do you recognize these words? This comes from the pep squad, who backs up our cheerleaders and urges our team on to victory. It is sponsored by Mrs. Martha Swann. Science Club “I’VE GOT SIXTY, WHO’LL MAKE IT SEV- ENTY, SEVENTY, ONCE, TWICE, SOLD FOR SEVENTY CENTS.” Yes, here we are at the Box- Social-Dance sponsored by the Science club as its money-making project. The Science Club, under the sponsorship of Mr. Dubbelde, is in its second year of existence. Its purpose is to promote interest and activities in the world of science. The only qualification for membership is to have an executive council approved project. Mem- bers of the club work on their projects in their spare time and on Science Club “Work Nights.” Chorus - Glee Club - Band MAY I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION, EVERY- ONE? This show has to be ready by tomorrow night and we’ve a lot of work to do.” The speaker is Mr. Opp and the audience con- sists of the members of the band and glee club. They are getting ready to put on one of their many programs. Last-minute rehearsals are going on all over the place. The sextette is trying to find their accompanist and the Combo is tuning up its instruments. This year, we have two sextettes composed of members of the glee club. The Combo has seven musicians selected from the regular band. The letter-girls are an important part of the marching band. The music department has the largest enroll- ment of any in our school. Its various groups give numerous school programs throughout the year and they do an excellent job of entertaining at com- munity activities. Our music groups participate in district and state contests each year and bring home their share of awards. National Honor Society WHEN OCTOBER ROLLS AROUND, THE JUNIORS BEGIN TO FEEL SOME TWINGES OF NERVOUSNESS. Why? Well, this is the month when the National Honor Society chooses its new members. If you are in the upper part of your class, you have a good chance to become a part of this honorary society for outstanding junior and senior students. Under the leadership of their sponsors, Mrs. Florence McGee and Mrs. Mae Rhine, the members sell mums for the Homecoming, promote scholar- ship, and try to keep their own grades at a high level. It is certainly an honor to become a member of this club. Industrial Arts INDUSTRY CALLS! The Industrial Arts Club, now celebrating its second birthday, is a club for Senior High boys who have had two years of shop. The main purpose of the club is to create and maintain an interest in Industrial Arts. Under the sponsorship of Mr. James Compis, the members hold a “Project Night” each month and work on their hobbies. This young club plans to affiliate with the national organization next year. The Library Staff CHECK YOUR BOOKS OUT HERE! The library staff is rendering valuable aid in our school libraries. This year for the first time, members have regular meetings to discuss library problems. This is something new for C. M. High. It is sponsored by the Senior F.H.A. They hope to make it an annual affair. The club’s annual affairs are the Sweetheart Dance in February; Mother and Daughter Ban- quet, a Christmas Potluck and Party, and the Style Show in the spring. Initiations also rolls around for the new members in the spring. The girls work hard all year to be able to sponsor these different affairs for their club and the school. They sell hot dogs, hot coffee and po- tato chips at the basketball and football games. The girls do not spend all the money for fun. Every year they give money to the United Christ- mas Fund. In all, the F.H.A. has a well-rounded activities program for the girls. It helps to train them to live in the world as a woman and a mother. The Eagles Club WHERE'S YOUR LETTER? That’s the key to membership in the Eagles Clubs, which is spon- sored by Coach Robinson. They have done an outstanding job in secur- ing money for the football lights during the past year and will continue until the light deficit is wiped out. Each year they sponsor the Athletic Banquet, which is one of the most outstanding events of the year. This page is sponsored by V. T. Church Co., Lebanon SPECIAL EDITION EAGLET Athletic Events of 56 - 57 Cross Country Basketball The Civic Memorial Cross Country Team, un- der the coaching: of John Logan, has completed another successful season. Althought they didn’t win any big meets, they had many “to place” and gave good performances. Baseball Coach Robinson’s Eagles played seventeen games this year; the most they have ever played. There was fine sportsmanship shown and every- one tried hard. We are looking forward to a good season next year with the juniors and sopho- mores. Track The Eagles Track Squad had many young boys on the team, and with the interest they have shown, 1 am sure that our future track teams will continue to show improvement. The Civic Memorial Eagles had a fair season under the supervision of Coach John Logan and Assistant Coach, Don Simpson. They turned in good performances against Belleville, Highland, and some of the better teams in the area. The juniors and sophomores show great pro- mise and everyone expects much from them next year. Football The Eagles of Civic Memorial High School had a fair season this year; winning five games out of nine. The coaching staff of Robinson and Hauser expected a better season than the records show. Having lost too many conference games, the Eagles received fourth place in the Midwestern Conference. I- Eagles vs. Madison The Exciting Activities Homecoming THE FIFTH ANNUAL HOMECOMING WAS HELD NOVEMBER 13, 1956. As usual, everyone had been eagerly awaiting the full-to-the-brim day. It began with the parade bright and early Saturday morning. Most of our clubs and organizations had been planning and working steadily and in the end the Junior F.H.A. came out on top as first prize winner. The all-important game was played that afternoon and our Eagles were defeated by the Madison Trojans, by a score of 27-0. Saturday night, the Homecoming Dance was held. An air of tense excitement and anticipation captured the scene as the crowd awaited the entrance of the 1956- 57 Homecoming Queen. In contrast to the noise and confusion previous to the entrance of the royal page, a hush fell over the crowd as each maid made her appearance. Then, to climax the evening Miss Roseann Hanks entered and proceded to the stage for her coronation. She was crowned by the retiring queen, Miss Joann Montgomery. The Queen and her court then retired to the dance floor for the Queen’s Dance. EAGLET SPECIAL EDITION Social Activities of ’56 -’57 “A Boy Named Beulah” JUNIOR CLASS PLAY “A Boy Named Beulah,” a three-act comedy, was presented by the Junior Class in File Gym- nasium on November 16. “Corky” Corcoran, (Charles Rushing), is the boy named Beulah. He allows his rich aunt in Eng- land, Lady Castleton, (Sue Gholson), to believe that he is a girl in order to inherit her fortune. Corky is in love with Polly McBride, (Barbar Oettel), who with her brothers Hank, (Jess Bunch), and Ted, (Robert Stieglitz), has inherited a spooky old farmhouse. The McBride brothers, who are in love with the Dushane sisters, Ava, (Sharron Vogel),’ and Nanelle, (June Johnson), disguise themselves as doctors. The Kayo Brothers, in order to outwit Aimee, the girls scheming step-mother, Mrs. De Forrest Dushane, (Anne Augustine). Scat Katz, a young chemist (Don Emde), who is perfecting a new lie detector, Thrthcola, tried to escape the amorous attentions of a lady wrestler, Beulah Zubysko, (Jackie Webb). Chilford Gold- stone, a banker, (Tom Berry), and his nephew, Grant, (Paul Lane), are also involved in compli- cated love affairs, while Bertie Castleton, (Byron Beck), is quite willing to transfer his affections from the pipe-smoking disguised Beulah to the more refined, lovely Dushane sister. Norah O’Cassidy, the Irish cook (Ruth Schoene- weis), and Marmalade Jackson, the Negro maid, (Polly Nicolet), who abhors ghosts, become hysteri- cal over the appearance of Tongo, the frightful Leopard-man, (Glen West). When the diamond, The Star of the Congo, is found, the mystery is solved with truth and love prevailing. The play cast, the officers of the Junior Class and Sponsor, Miss Amy Stallings, and members of the various committees assisted Mrs. Ruth Scott, who directed the play. Junior - Senior Prom The C. M. gym took on the gay, festive air of the Mardi-Gra for the annual Junior Senior Pron). Jhe decorations were a multitude of colors and two huge drama masks of black and white crepe were spotlighted at the far end of the gym. Everyone danced to the music of Walt Schlemer. Jim Acton and Betty Davis were crowned King Rex and Queen Regina of the Mardi-Gra. 54 “Curtain Going Up” SENIOR CLASS PLAY The Seniors presented “Curtain Going Up” in the File Gymnasium on the evening of April LJ. Junior White, Senior Class President, served as Student Director. The play is the story in comic terms of the production of a senior play in high school, and the action took place on the stage and in the audi- torium as well. The arrangement was novel in th$t various actors were at times seated with or near the audience, yet did not become a part of it. Joyce Plegge in the role of the pretty young dramatic teacher, Miss Burgess, was faced with a myraid of problems. One “problem” was “Old, Tony, the school janitor with a sharp tongue as played by Charles Brunk. “Jocko”, Jack Patterson, “Andy”, Dave Cain, “Buck”, Jim Milligan, with Joan Bria, Sharron Pruitt and Annabel Kessler all featured in a se£ of crossed-up high school romances with a capita) R. In fact some of these characters, double-featured, in the play within the play, were seen as rivals for the hand of “Belinda”, Joan Bria, charming heroine, the Belle of the Deep South. Charles Bishop started in a straight comedy role; first, as “Milt”, the teen-ager; later, as “Luke”, the ancient negro retainer of the planta- tion. Linda Staas as “Elsie”, Mary Reuter as “Syl- via”, Barbara Berry as “Joan”, all proved useful as well as pretty in “Curtain Going Up,” for it was because of their action in the play that the curtain was opened and closed. Almost everything that could happen did. When advice was most needed, there appeared from the audience a professional actress “Kyle Roberts”, (Roseann Hanks). Things began to shape up quite happily when the banker’s daughter (Sharron Pruitt), who was driven to theft and dirty tricks by the ambition of her father (John Neunaber), repented and was forgiven. Perhaps most unexpected of all was the ro- mance which developed between Miss Burgess her- self and — yes — Mr. Norman Carter, the journal- ism teacher, (Dave Kassing). It was as Miss Burgess sighed, “Oh Norman” - - that the curtains came together for the last time on the senior play of ’57. Mrs. Edna Tucker was the director of the play. 48 REGIONAL TOURNEY, 5 NO SCHOOL 1 ( ' 21 22 3® QUARTER Ea. 4T 2 Spectator Staff makes a float 3 Selling' ads for the Spectator 13 Homecoming - Event of the 17 F.
