Students of C. M. LOOK! LISTEN! THIS IS YOUR SCHOOL LIFE. Let us take you back to September. DO YOU REMEMBER . . . The election of cheerleaders; the pep rally before our first football game; how Margret and Richard were just two of the 639 students who renewed and made new ac- quaintances at the Friendship Dance; and how before many days of school had passed, the art students found themselves hard at work! Our marching band really improved the half-time at our victorious Home- coming game in October; from these lovely candidates. Jenny. Donna . and Margret. a Homecoming i(L Queen was chosen; from all the clever floats the F.T.A. took first place; while our defeat over Madison made the day perfect. At the first assembly in November. Rev. Kolb presented Bob. a represen- tative from his team, with first place for the Halloween window painting contest; Joanne and Charlie helped the Juniors stop time with their performance in 'Turn Back The Clock ; Bud received his “Outstanding Player Award at the first an- nual Wood River Town- ship Football Banquet; and the D.E. students made displays for Par- ents’ Night. vr In December, even the boys became good cocks in Family Living Classes; there were surprises and thrills at the GAA Carnival: the baseketball season really got underway; and the Christmas season was spotlighted by many pot- lucks. such as the FEA annual affair. Wc began the New Year by inviting Student Council representatives from near-by schools to visit us; weren't those semester exams (especially Sec- retarial Office Practice) ter- A rible? Remember the excite- ment of the Varsity Team at winning first place in the Blind Tournament at Cahokia and how proudly Millard presented the trophy to Melba, our Student Council President. Members of the Girls’ Glee Club cer- tainly sparkled at the beautiful and successful Winter Concert in Febru- ary: June displayed her ability on the trampoline at GAA play-night. What's with Judy buying the tickets for John? It must be Twirp Week. Art students. Jim. Jerry and Bill, learned a new way to make posters. I % o SP Coach Logan announced the numeral and letter winners at the Annual Ath- letic Banquet; March was the month of district music and speech contests, and we found Ann as a pianist; Ann. Jackie and Rosemary as vocal winners; Jim, Gene, Judy, Mar- lene. Ray. Shirley, and Terryl as speech contestants with Ray as a State contestant; and Curtiss. Richard. Rosemary. Ken and Danny doing their best in the instrumental sec- tion. In May. final exam time came: Judy. President of the GAA. proudly es- corted her mother to the Mother- Daugter Banquet: the Juniors (especially Ann and her es- cort) dreamed of feting the Seniors at the Junior- Senior Prom, and on Award Night we receiv- ed our rewards for the year's accomplishments. The Seniors really sparkled at the Prom: and the Autograph Party brought graduation nearer as w c proudly displayed The Best Spec- tator’ ever produced: sadly, we realized the year was end- ing when we presented the gavel to the Juniors; but we recalled many happy memories as we proudly beamed at our diplomas and so ended our Senior year. THE SPECTATOR GOES TO PRESS Twenty-Six THE SPECTATOR STAFF The Spectator Staff spends the year busily engaged in collecting a history of the school life of C. M. students, thereby, giving them a permanent record by which they can record many happy memories in years to come. The staff is composed of Senior students, who are elected by their classmates, a Junior editor and business manager, who work to- gether to make the book an interesting and worth-while publication. Each and every Senior student is given an opportunity to help with the production of The Spectator. Upon the arrival of the book from the printers, an Autograph Night is sponsored by the staff, and all the students not only get their book but spend the evening gathering autographs and comments from their many friends and faculty members. The Spectator is one of the biggest projects of the year and it takes continuous co-opera- tion on everyone’s part to make it a bigger and better book each year. The Ad Sellers compare notes. SERENADE OF THE BELLES CHORUS The Senior High chorus is composed of 90 girls and is directed by Mr. Ernest Opp. Due to the large numeber of stu- dents, there are two classes, but these meet three times a week for rehearsal. The chorus gives an annual Christmas and Easter concert. The Glee-club, composed of 40 girls, is selected through try-outs. They meet every Monday at 7 p.m. to practice for coming programs. They perform at various school activities as well as give concerts throughout the year, but they work their hardest when contest time arrives in the hope that they can win a “First.” The sextettes are always happy to provide entertainment at school activities and club programs. Whether the 50 members were doing difficult formations on the football field, marching down the street in a parade, or playing for various other school activities, they always gave a top performance. The majorette and letter girls added sparkle and variety to the routine of the marching band. When it came to rhythm and dancing, our combo took the limelight. They furnished entertainment for many informal affairs throughout the school year. TURN BACK THE HANDS OF TIME TURN BACK THE CLOCK A three-act comedy was aiven by the Junior class November 12. The play is built around the universal truth that all generations are more or less alike. In the prologue Ray Gooch and Joanne Leonard, waiting up for their children, spend the time harping on the irres- ponsibilities of the younger generation. The clock was then turned back to their childhood and we got a glimpse of their antics in 1928. Charles Pelan and Ann Drennan are the distracted parents in three lively scenes which follow. Children in this be- wildered but lovable family are Jim Berry. Diane Mad- rey. and Joanne Leonard. Others in the play were Marlene Meisenheimer (love- able cook). Gene Sellier (ardent lover and salesman). Virginia Virgin, and Joy Zimmermann (flappers). Judy Doolen (who packed a powerful wallop). Carl Guthrie, Gisela Emde and Joe Depew who came to the party. All members of the class worked hard to make a very fine production. The play was directed by Mrs. Catherine Slavik. The Charleston is Revived. Usherettes The Stars Forty-Five HOME SWEET HOMICIDE Cast of Home Sweet Homicide” Where’re Dinah and April? HOME SWEET HOMICIDE Home Sweet Homicide was presented by the Senior Class. April 15. in the File Gymnasium. The play was directed by Martha Goette. Dinah (Jackie Chappee) wishes they could find an ideal man to marry mother (Jo Ann Cosby) and the other children (Donna Lindquist and Paul Hargraves) feel that what their mother really needs is a big pub- licity break on her next novel. As they work about their own dates and their mother - - two shots ring out. The young people realize that here is a chance for the publicity their mother needs — and when the good-looking police lieutenant (a bachelor) appears - - then maybe their other problem can be solved, too. The young people decide to play detective. They come up with some valuable clues that bring many suspects into the mystery of the murdered woman. The excitement mounts swiftly, and in a thrill-packed third act, they not only solve the mystery but bring off the romance between mother and Bill (Bill Kay lor). Oh! Dear! My purse! What happened? Mr. Wofford? Our present Board of Education is composed of the same seven men. who were elected when our school district became Community Unit No. 8. These seven men have worked coop- eratively for the past five years with the only aim in mind to produce the best edu- cation for the boys and girls of our com- munity. The outstanding businessmen and com- munity leaders give freely of their time and effort and through their legislative fore-sight and planning have helped pro- duce an outstanding educational system for us. The Seniors of '55 wish to express their sincere appreciation for the many and varied educational opportunities, which the Board of Education has helped to provide for them. Superintendent Bethalto Community Unit 8 Mr. Wilbur R. Trimpe. our present superintendent, came to us with the form- ation of Community Unit No. 8 in 1950. Mr. Trimpe brought to us not only pro- gressive leadership but also a wide edu- cational background and a wealth of ex- perience in civic and community activ- ities. Mr. Trimpe has had a varied teach- ing experience ranging from three years of teaching in a rural school in Mason County: five years as an elementary principal and teacher in Forest City and Manito: eighteen years as City Superin- tendent in Havana before coming to our school as Unit Superintendent four years ago; and has taught college classes at Western State College. Shurtleff and McKendree Colleges. Through his dynamic leadership, perse- verance and guidance, our school has shown enormous growth. Through his sincere efforts, we find that we have a curriculum, which helps us in any voca- tion we chose: a better-qualified faculty to guide our learning and experiences in the classrooms; special education for those in need of it: a new Junior and Senior School Building to house 700 students: transportation for those who qualify; a cafeteria serving daily hot lunches: fed- eral aid for building and maintenance of buildings; an increased tax rate which assures more and better education in Community No. 8; and a football field to help the Eagles achieve victory. Even though Mr. Trimpe is an ex- tremely busy man. he still takes time to talk with students, faculty and parents, who seek his aid. His energetic, enthusiastic personality spreads throughout the school and makes the atmosphere of our school friendly, cooperative, loyal and willing to achieve. The Seniors sincerely appreciate all that has been accomplished by Mr. Trimpe and hope that in years to come, when they visit C. M.. they will be greeted by his hearty handshake and smiling face. Sixty-Seven AND MAINTAIN OUR BEST INTERESTS KERMIT HARDIN Administrative Assistant Curriculum - Supplies JOHN A. MULL. Principal Civic Memorial and Junior High Mr. John A Mull, became our principal five years ago when our school district became Bethalto Community No. 8. He is not only an energetic school leader but takes an active part in com- munity and professional activities. He guides our school activities and learning with a friendly, firm and understanding policy. Faculty and students alike look to him for approval of deeds well done as well as for help in times of need. Mr. Kermit Harden, the Assistant Sup- erintendent of Schools, has given much of his time to the improvement of our curriculum. He is not only an aid to the administration but helps the teachers and students as well. Our school has come a long way under his tolerant, understanding guidance and we know it can not fail with Mr. Mull at the helm. To make sure that all athletic events have been recorded correctly. Mr. Harden has been the official time-keeper at all Civic Memorial varsity events. Sixty-Eight WILLING HOME ECONOMICS AND ABLE SPONSORS HARRIETT ANN STEINRAUF B.S.. Carl McCleland. a former student at C. M. A dark-haired, lively boy was he. Happy and smiling he would be. And on a dark December eve Carlie from this earth did leave. It was God who took him from us here To live with Him, free from fear. There he lives in a new kind of life Free from care and all worldly strife. He knows not the troubles of the day But only the fair and godly way. One Hundred Thirty-Three Autographs Engraving...........................................Peoria Engraving Co.
