Lester Nichols. Director of Public Relations PUBLIC RELATIONS BUREAU The Public Relations Bureau has achieved for the College, what in former years had boon considered virtually impossible, namely a good “press. Good not only in the sense of favor- able — in itself a notable achievement — but also in quantity. Many of us will remember the pleasant mo- ments reading tho nows clippings on the per- petually over-crowded Collcgc-in-tho-Nows“ bulletin board adjacent to the Cafeteria en- trance. In actuality the clippings on the board were but a fraction of those items concerning the College which appear daily in the metro- politan press and out-of-town newspapers. Everything from tho Centennial Day celebra- tion to the House Plan Date Buroau got more than adequate coverage. The Public Relations Bureau was organized in 1933. its purpose to keep the New York City taxpayers constantly informed of the program and services offered by tho College. The first director of publicity at the College. Irving Rosenthal, was indirectly responsible for the choosing of a college mascot — in 1934 he or- ganized the contest in which the beaver was chosen. Les Nichols, tho present director, has since his appointment in 1946 reorganized the Bureau and is primarily responsible for its present success. He is ably assisted by Israel Lovino. Lawrence Weinor. Ed Walzer, Ann Marie Petrenko, Bob Avery. Bob Rothstein and Bob Stein. LIBRARY Professor Jerome Wilcox, the college's chief librarian, who would like to dump some of his quarter of a million volumes instead of coal in the hole adjacent to the Library Building, eased the book shelf situation somewhat this past year by setting up an annex in the base- mont of the Army Hall building. Present plans call for the gradual improve- ment of the Army Hall branch with better light- ing facilities, private conference rooms and a special section for access to the large binded newspaper files on catalogue. While budget oxpoctations aren't too rosy at present, Wil- cox assisted by associate librarians Charles K. Angrist and George E. Nelson, are constantly making surveys of areas on the campus proper where extensions can possibly be set up. The growth and expansion of the library stock hero has been directly attributable to some 29 trust funds contributed by alumni donors. Professor Jerome Wilcox
