I you, the Citrus students, this day by day journal of Citrus My life. We hope that the journal, with its photographs and illustra- tions, will help to recall to your mind many of the pleasant experi- ences you have had during the school year of 1939-1940. And in the years to come, when you pick up this book, we hope that it will con- tinue to be a pleasant reminder of a pleasant and worthwhile year. If La Palman has a theme this year, it is that of a diary which any of you might have kept, that is if you were given to keeping a diary. The sketches on this page are our artist's conception of typical Citrus students. We hope you like them. Quite a hit of excite- ment-giris squealing' and rushing into eaeh others arms, Ili! What did you do all summer? The beach? How wonderful! ,I stayed at home most of the sunnner but went to the mountains for two weeks-and, say, 1 met the eut-e-s-t boy! -boys guffawing and slapping' eaeh other on the hack. Ilut in spite of the excitement of meeting' old friends, classes proceeded according to precedent, the first elass beginning at 8:00 o'elock, the last one ending' at 3:10. Between the third and fourth periods Mr. Hayden ealled an assem- bly to welcome new students and to t1'y to make them feel at home. Mr. Sturges and Mrs. Sheldon, the vice-principals, when not meeting' classes, were in the general office helping' Mr. Hayden, tirace, and Ruth as trouble-shooters. 'l'he freshmen had so many new things to see, to do, and to learn that they were probably dizzy by the time the day was over--in fact, so dizzy that doubtless several of them took the wrong' bus home and had to return to school with Sandy or Bloc and start all over again. Probably every student had the problem of adjusting' himself to at least one teacher he had never had before. At the beginning' of each period one found his classroom, g'rabbed a seat, and, if the teacher was new to him, looked him or her over to try to decide if re- ports about him or her could really be true. After it appeared that everyone had filed in and found himself a seat, the teacher usually passed out text-books, having' each person sig'n l.y,,,,,.,A B. 5,,,,L,,0N as a library record. Other preliminaries might Vice'Principal of gms follow, depending' upon the teacher, but thc1'e were never enough pt'eliminaries to prevent S the teacher from finally opening the text-book and making assignments. Then one knew that vacation was really over and school had begun. NOVEMBER 17-The most thrilling football game of the season was played today on Merritt Field with our Varsity nosing Chino out of the Tri-County League championship picture with a 2 to 0 win. We scored our safety in the last two minutes of the game after two touchdowns, one by Jarvis and one by Lode, had been disallowed and in spite of 110 yards in penalties. Dick Cone's block- ing of a punt made the safety possible.
