-ZGQTULLQZBQTACKOQQ History of Batlery K Artillery 'CTHE REGIMENTS OWN BY JEFF L. HENDERSON Battery K , was organized on August Ist, IQ23. The personnel consisted of eighty- eight candidates, two non-commissioned officers from Battery A , oth Field Artillery, and four commissioned officers-Captain D. White, 9th F. A., who served as Commanding Officer of the Battery, Captain L. M. Skerry, F. A., Ist Lieut. W. C. Boylan, 9th F. A., and Ist Lieut. C. C. Zimmerman, FA-ORC. To these four officers belongs the credit for the successful work of the organization. Their own interest in the work and in the candi- dates, and their consideration, insured them the friendship of the battery cadets, and commanded their respect and obedience. Battery K started trudging up the path of success right off the bat. Practically all of the candidates were Blue or White Course men, so the close order drill for the first few days was more in the nature of a review. After several days of udough-boy drill, we were introduced to four French 7575. They looked mighty strange at first, but we came to regard them as old buddies before we left. The same applies to the sixty horses whose acquaintance we made soon after some instruction in the mounting of guns. The first step in establishing friendly relations with the horses was instruction in mount- ing. QWhile mounting guns and horses sounds alike, there is considerable difference-the most outstanding feature being that the guns stand still.j The first twenty men to get clear to the saddles of the horses acted as though they were riding Rolls-Royces. Next we took a lesson in grooming the mounts. This was pretty hard on the horses, but practice makes perfect, and we are regular groomers now. A After more instruction in the art of riding a horse, and not getting off till we were ready, we went back to the guns, where, under the supervision of the battery officers, we were taught how to sight the guns, get the aiming points, and other 'necessary details in the make-up of a good artillery man. 4 We received several opportunities to do our stuff in parades and reviews, the first of which was the regimental parade in Leavenworth in respect to President Harding. Only twenty of the battery rode, the rest walked all the way out there and all the way back, not a man dropping out despite the intense heat., We were also in the other regimental reviews, and in one review with the 3rd Battalion. A One department which ranks high in our estimation, is the Culinary Section. The Mess Sergeant was a pretty tight fellow. He would allow us only four dishes of ice cream at one meal. The fellows liked to do K. P.-except on Saturdays and Sundays-and they were certainly a funny sight grouped around a sack of potatoes or onions. We don't want to forget the other two Sergeants-King, the Supply Sergeant, and Gay, better known as I-Iappyn, the Top-Kick. Both were good men when they were asleep, but they got hard-boiled once in a while when they woke up. We got so we could overlook these faults, though, and could laugh at how they looked when they were mad. We were fortunate in having several celebrities in our ranks, comedians, darn fools, and sometimes worse, according to how you were feeling. But they made life easier after all. One of them was a little runt known as Sarne. Another was Gilbreth or S1ats , who was also a talented-vocalist and horseman. In addition, Battery KW ranked first in the production of Jelly Beans, for instance, Robert Bell, John Titus, and George McLean. The fellows argued at great length about the desirabilities of their home states, many of these debates getting very heated, but in spite of this, we lived up to the artillery men's motto-'CONE FOR ALL-ALL FOR ONE. We are firmly convinced that we had the best uoutfitf' in the IQ23 CMT Camp at Fort Leavenworth. ' The men wish to take this opportunity to thank all the commissioned and non-com- missioned officers for the kindness and consideration shown them in the course of instruction and in the camp life.
