WRIGHT On August I, 1923, various awkward looking groups of strangers followed guides down past the Camp Exchange, across a little gully, up to the top of the bank where they were greeted by a little white sign with the single letter-HI . The street in which they stood was grown high with grass and weeds, and littered with papers and other trash. This is a month later, the street is seen now swept smooth and free from trash. The reason is simple-we don't throw litter on the grounds. The rule is- Keep trash boxes full. ' The improvement in the street finds its parallel in the candidates. Then they were awkward and uncertain. Now, though they may not be graceful, they know their stuff, and know they know it. Then, they went and returned in confusion. Now, each man knows his place and occupies it. There are four reasons for all this, and the men met these reasons the next day. They were the officers of Company UI -Captain C. B. Howard, Company Commander, is a veteran of long experience in the army, is a forceful speaker, and greeted us early in the game with the slogans, Put CI' in F-I-R-S-T. And, The way to do it is to knock the Generals' 'eye' out. That indeed became the highest aim of the Company. We tried to knock his eyenoutwith our snappiness in dress and salute, in drill, and especially in review. It is even reported that candidate Goodner was heading up the Company Street late one night when his buddies stopped him. Let me go, he demanded, Pm going to knock the General's eye Out. It was with difiiculty that they Woke him up and persuaded him to return to bed. First Lieutenant Edwin Stitts, and Second Lieutenants E. P. Coyne and Guy A. Waters, were the Platoon Commanders, and in them the captain found able and enthusiastic allies in his move for the General S eye . Page Sevenly-nina
