Jefferson City, MO Hisfory of Company GU THE GO-GETTERSU BY GEORGE ADDISON , The first man reported to G Company on the 3Oth day of July, but practically nothing was accomplished in the way of drill before the second of August, by which time nearly all of the men had reported. At the first drill formation the men were divided into platoons according to size. The Company started off the month with one hundred and fifty-eight men, including those from the White and Blue Courses, but due to sickness, home, and otherwise, we lost continually until we ended up with only one hundred and forty-two. The officers of the Company are Captain Wm. A. P. Moncure, ISL Lieutenant F. C. McFaland, 2nd Lieutenant L. L. Comfort, and 2nd Lieutenant H. A. Dougherty. These officers immediately turned the practical instruction Over to the Blue Men, placing Mr. Knight of Hamburg,,Arkansas, in charge of the Company, Mr. Chamberlain of Jefferson City, Mo., with the ISL Platoon, Mr. Addison of Salem, Mo., with the 2nd, and Mr. Wilder .of St. Genevieve, Mo., with the 3rd. The first week was a bit dry and uninteresting since we took up close order drill and the Manual of Arms as prescribed by the I. LD. R., but even at that we had one event which came as a very agreeable surprise and which also had no precedent in CMT Camps. On the fourth morning in camp, when we came in for a thirty minute rest period, the Mess Sergeant presented us with a pint of milk and since that time We have become so spoiled that it will be necessary for the 'chome folks to get an extra pint every day when we get back. . During the second week we took up Extended Order work which Was quite a variation from the Work of the previous week. The Blues and Whites had many interesting demon- strations which took up the details of Scouting and Patrolling. While the advanced men were observing these demonstrations, the Reds were taking up the Principles of Rifle Marksmanship, and judging from scores made on the range one would say that they got something besides the principles. The third week was mainly taken up by active firing on the range for the Reds, and by demonstrations and lectures for the Whites and Blues. These class hours for the ad- vanced men were mainly devoted to Machine Guns and Signal Communications. These lectures were exceedingly interesting and consequently very beneficial. One day of the week was devoted to athletic contests of different kinds. On Saturday night we were the guests of the Leavenworth Chamber of Commerce which gave us a fine lawn party at the Court House. This was undoubtedly the crowning social event of the month, even sur- passing the camp dances which were held every Wednesday and Saturday night. Pagr Sixly-nine
