History of Company HE HTHE COMPANY THAT MADE THE ENCAMPMENT FAMOUS August I, 1923, found many boys from Arkansas, Missouri, and Kansas assembled at the CMT Camp at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. From this number the enrollment officers set out ISO men to be known as Company UE . The evening of August ISK found the men placed in the tents of the Company Street ready to begin the neW life Which Was to be theirs on the morroW'. On August 2nd the company Was organized into the three platoons and the platoon leaders, sergeants and squad leaders Were appointed. Then all Was in readiness for real Work. This Work Was to be under the supervision of the folloWing officers: Captain F. L. Gerlach, U. S. Army Retired Officer, Commanding Officer of the Company, L. M. Shields, ISL Lieutenant, 17th Infantry, enlisted 1914, served With a Tank Corps in England and France in World War and Was commissioned in 1918, S. Blocker, ISL Lieutenant Iloth Engineers, Who served in the British army 1914-15, transferred to American army, and served With Queen's OWn Scottish Riffes, J. K. Runyan, 2nd Lieutenant ORC, Coe College ROTC, Sergeant Kernan, I6 years service, 3 years CMTC, and has served in U. S. Army in China, Russia, France and Philippines. Our real army life began on Monday folloWing organization When our cadet oHicers Were appointed. They proved to be thoroughly equal to their tasks. These cadets, namely, the White and Blue Course men, entered into their task of teaching the raWest of the raW recruits by the route of persuasion and hard-boildom. However, the hard-boiled cadets had little enough success at first and still less later on. By the successful efforts of our Commanding Officer and his Lieutenants it Was not long until a mere glance at Company ME Would disclose a smoothly running organism that Was training a picked bunch in order that they might' be capable of receiving the World's greatest blessings. The success of the Company through this perfect organism proves the saying, Much effort accomplishes much. In activities of camp life, Company E 7, Was Well knoWn. Because of the late organiza- tion of our baseball club the first game Was lost Which disqualified us in the final series but all others Were Won. In Company E there Were many events of camp life causing pleasure to many and misery for feW. The non-coms received many excuses from the supply sergeant as to Why he could not furnish Reveille Buttons and Skirmish Lines. Our Well knoWn Sergeant Ker- nan, Who is Irish by nature and nationality, is probably knoWn better as the man Who puts us on K. P. to get out of the tiresome drill. He does his best to make other things enjoyable, also. On the coldest of the cold mornings he has been knoWn to Hair-out some candidates by letting them stand Reveille in their B. V. D's.
