Magazine Ark Hisiory C0 mpany D THE PRIDE OF THE REGIMENTH On August 1, 1923, there assembled from the states of Arkansas, Missouri and Kansas, a body of young men at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, bent on a month of pleasant association, instruction, and physical development. As fate Would have it about ISO stalwart young sons of Arkansas were thrown together and were formed into Company D , Which Com- pany later in the month attained a record of Which all members Were proud. Commanded by such Officers as Captain F. C. Foley, Ist Lieutenant Wm. Baxter, and 2nd Lieutenant Arthur Bell, Jr., the company Was rapidly Whipped into an organization as efiicient as Was humanly possible Within the short time allotted for the many subjects to be covered. I ' l ' Our Company Commander, Captain Frank C. Foley, Was commissioned November 30, 1916, and assigned to the 9th Infantry. He served With this outfit throughout' the World War, going over seas September, 1917. While in France he saw active service on many of the principal battle fronts and received three citations for Gallantry in Action. He has qualified as expert rifie and expert pistol shot. Captain Foley is a graduate of the First Corps School, A. E. F. School of the Line, A. E. F., and the Infantry School at Fort Ben- ning, Ga. ' First Lieut. Wm. Baxter, Engineers, ORC, was commissioned March 8, 1917, and served throughout the World War. Before this he saw service on the lkfexican Border. U 2nd Lieut. Arthur Bell, Jr. received his commission May 31, 1923, before which time he attended Kemper Military Academy at Booneville, Missouri, being commissioned Cadet Captain of the 128th F. A. He also attended ROTC encampments at Camps Custer and Knox. TWO incidents Served to mar the otherwise happy days of the boys of Company HD . Calvin Redford of Stuttgart, Arkansas, Who died in the hospital from an attack of acute appendicitis on August 9th, Was a member of Company HD . A subscription provided for a floral Wreath, and members of the Company composed the pall bearers Who accom- panied the body to Leavenworth, where it was met by the bOy's parents. Cadet Redford here made many friends during the short period he was in camp and the news of his death brought a feeling of sadness throughout the Company. Shortly afterwards Top Sergeant Warren of the 17th Infantry, attached to .Company MD , received notice of the death of his mother in New York. Out of respect for Sergeant Warren and in appreciation of his kindness and help, a popular subscription was taken and 871.00 was given him to help defray expenses to New York. I Page Fifty-jivc'
