OUR SENTIMENTS It takes aghard job, faced and accomplished cooperatively, and with many congenial agreements and disagreements, to bring out the strong points and abilities of a man, and to establish friendships. Unfortunate indeed is the man who has never had these experi- ences, and correspondingly fortunate is he who can meet such conditions in a manly way. For this reason, among many others, we who have had the privilege of engaging in the constructing and assembling of this Annual, can forget the hours of hard work-harder because of the good times the rest of the candidates were enjoying-and remember only 'thejoy of accomplishment and of new friendships formed. It has been the hope and effort of the staff to instill into this book something more than a mere recounting of the hard work, namely, the interesting experiences and the comical situations of the camp. Those who sacrificed to produce a tangible memory of our month here are in camp for a purpose, and that purpose has as its guiding beacon the Starry Banner that floated at the center-of the camp. We have thrilled to follow it in Review. We have been proud and glad to salute it at Retreat. And we hope our lives will be a fitting sacrifice should they ever be required. Page Twenty-eight .

.Pa l'iUl.L 'ZBQ laACK 4 9 Q H Camp Religious Program BY A. D. SUTHERLAND, CHAPLAIN U. S., D. B. V e A CCamp Chaplainl 7 During the early part of the summer the Protestant chaplain for the camp had not been appointed, so the Executive Officer asked the Fort Leavenworth Army Y. M. C. A. to start the organization of a religious work program. This duty was placed in the hands of Mr. Hugh S. Richards, who arranged the following excellent schedule of activities. First-The religious services in camp on Sundays for which he secured speakers and musical talent from dilqerent localities for morning tent services and evening outside as- semblies. Second-He secured transportation from city churches for young men who wished to attend morning worship in the city churches after the tent service. Third-The prep- aration of suitable lessons for Bible Classes and the selection of leaders from the city churches as teachers. ' T The plans for all this work as outlined by Mr. Richards met with a generous response from the city pastors and church people. ChaplainA. D. Sutherland, who had reported for duty at the U. S. D. B., Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, on July 18th, was detailed as Camp Chaplain and found this work splendidly organized and awaiting his coming to make it effective. All the services and classes have been exceedingly well attended. The Rev. Bert C. Stover, pastor of the First Christian Church of the city of Leaven- worth, was also active in religious activities and helped arrange many interesting programs. Chaplain Babst of Fort Leavenworth returned from leave on August 3rd, and was detailed on temporary camp duty. He immediately made his arrangements for a complete religious ministry for the men of Catholic faith. The Y. M. C. A. tent was used for Mass on Sunday mornings and the men had also an opportunity to attend mass in the beautiful Catholic Church at the post. Both Chaplains were given a place on the training schedule and delivered addresses on Wednesday evenings on topics of helpful interest. T The men of the Jewish faith were welcomed to the temple in Leavenworth by Rabbi Ellinger, who met them soon after their arrival in camp. The entire program had the full support and encouragement of the Camp Commander and Executive Ofiicer, and the Camp Chaplains here acknowledge the help extended by the various organizations and individuals in and around Leavenworth.
