MQYULL' , l3,kC'K 99 g Baseball Camp had not been in progress a week until baseball was in full sway. Games were played on two diamonds whenever time could be found, the winners on each diamond and the losers playing for further advancement in the tournament. Teams were selected from every Company in the CMTC. ' Some good teams were eliminated at the start because of lack, of practice. Paramount among all of the games was the championship game between Company A and Company lv, August 26, on diamond number one. The Company A pill smashers were victorious by a score of five to four, thus winning the silver loving cup given by the camp authorities. ' I The game was a thriller from start to finish, and was not decided until the last batter had hung up his willow in the final game. Although four runs were scored by the lv Company team, only one of them was earned off the delivery of Clyde Smith, who allowed only two hits. The remainder of the runs were the direct result of four errors on the part of the Champions. Twelve Company I fence busters looked at the final strike. While Smith was performing so well behind the bat, he had a team mate to whom much of the credit for the victory should go. He acted his part like a veteran in the field, as well as having a good day at the bat. Shifflet, third baseman, played a great game, both offensive and defensive, getting two singles and a double out of four trips to the plate. He roamed about the hot corner in the field nipping several rallies in the bud by his brilliant fielding. Plumlee, who threw the slants for the losers, deserves much credit for his work on the elevated slab, allowing only eight hits which unfortunately were bunched with errors for the majority of the victor's runs. A West played a good game around the vicinity of the third sack, handling ive putouts and two assists without a bobble. T l COMPANY A CHAMPIONSHIP BASEBALL TEAM LEFT TO RIGHT-W. Hamilton, Sub., T. J. Athletic and Recreational Officer ' e SPORTING SPIRIT All sports showed an excellent example of the fair play and discipline taught to the cadets during their period of training at camp. Each individual was very careful that he did not take advantage over his opponent, thus trying to set an example before the younger men and also being true to his fellow men as well as himself. On behalf of the candidates of the Leavenworth Camp, we wish to insert a word of thanks here to the officers and the men from the Regulars who arranged the sport program and put it across. We have not been appointed for that purpose, but we are simply putting down on paper the unanimous expression of the boys in their con- versation. In the athletic efliciency contests, the general average of the entire encampment was 266.86 per cent. By states the average was as follows: Arkansas, 268.045 Nfissouri, 268.395 and Kansas, 26I.69. Tennis Championship This was the first time that a tennis tournament was conducted by the Citizens Military Training Camp, and it proved to be one of the best sports in camp. There was a very large entry list, forty-three in all, and it took three Weeks for it to be run oil. There were a lot of good players eliminated dur- ing the tournament. It was Well attended from start to finish. 1 Q The four who Went into the semi-finals were Donald McMullen, John H. Henry, Thomas Records and Paul Duncan. Henry and Duncan Won their matches and met in the finals. This proved to be a very exciting and interesting match, because the players were evenly matched and it Was anybody's game until the final ball was served. Duncan of Company F was the victor, defeating Henry of Company K by the scores of, 6-4, 2-6, 6-I, 4-6, and 6-4. Both players Were cheered heartilyby the members of their respect- ive Companies. L A great deal of credit should go to Mr. Jimmie Grier of Fort Leavenworth, who put in a lot of his spare time to make the tournament a success. His efforts were certainly appreciated.
