THE DEFENDER N f 13,5 t if . HISTORY OF CO. HO 12TH INFANTRY On July 1st, 1924, the day that the CMTC opened, Company C of the 12th In- fantry was organized as one of the numerous like units of this camp under the leadership of Captains Hutchinson, Barnwell and Lyon. Too much cannot be said in praise of the three named. Not one man in Company Cn, I can safely assure you, has the slightest grudge against them. Why should we, for they have at all times been as square with us as anyone might expect. That first day we surely needed the excellent leadership which was provided us, for we were certainly greenhorns',. After that long physical examination, which few of us will ever forget, we were taken in trucks and assigned to barracks, C-26 and C-27. Although we failed to realize it then, we now appreciate that ride in those army trucks, especially after the many tiresome marches that we had. In assigning us to our different duties, and aiding us in every way possible to become adjusted to the camp life here, some word of praise should be given the regulars of Company CH, who did their utmost. I have introduced my company as a group. I will now speak of its members. It would not be safe to suggest that our company is the best in Camp Meade. There would be too many protests. However, we feel that we are, even if others may disagree. We proved our superiority, I believe, at the inspection of July 12th. At that time, if you will recall, we received the enviable praise of General Fiske, commander of Camp Meade, an award granted to few companies during their short stay here. As a result of the riHe test made upon the range, Company C Twelfth is able to present a worthy record. 32 men have won medals. 1 expert, 5 sharpshooters and 26 marksmen is our enviable record. In the issuing of the final awards which were presented July 28th, Company CH was well represented. Philip Kratz was termed the best Basic Red in our company. The award was well chosen, for those who know Philip, agree that he is the kind of a chap that works with will and determination, in whatever he may be entered. Another figure, representing Company C 12th, who has brought fame to himself and to our military unit, is H. Steiner, who won the fancy diving event in the recent aquatic contest. Another feature we might mention, which will be appreciated by anyone who has ever happened around 'our barracks, is the entertaining by Steiner, Frye and Company. Steiner and Frye are two young athletes that have provided tricks of skill and strength for our enjoyment, which, I believe, could be equaled by few in this camp. I have now to mention our track men. In the first meet between the various regiments of Camp Meade we were well to the front in the number of men that placed. Clarke Turner won the hundred yard dash and Armand Keller was a member of the winning relay team. In the recent meet between the ROTC and the CMTC we are proud to speak of our worthy representative, Earl Thompson, a member of the winning relay team. It might be interesting to know who our most popular man is. Ask anyone of Com- pany C who Silverberg may be. Remember, I don't vouch for the answer that may be given you. Last, but not least, I want to say that we, members of the Company C Twelfth Infantry, are every one of us from the good old state of Pennsylvania. That is our proudest boast.
