B 12TH INFANTRY VVhen we, an unorganized crowd of men and boys from practically every walk of life, sipped lemonade on July lst, 1924, after our arrival at Camp hfeade, little did we know what an active and instructive month of our life we had embarked upon. Some had come for the benefits that are the natural result of the vigorous outdoor life of the army, while others were seeking a pleasant and inexpensive vacation with little or no work and a great deal of fun. In a very short time the efficient office force which had taken temporary quarters in the station, had armed each candidate with an envelope, containing all the information available concerning the students since the embryo soldiers had been born. Processing, or the act of fitting out the men in the well known khaki uniform that has never yet failed to thrill the heart of every red blooded American youth, was next on the program, after each candidate had been physically examined a11d proved himself able to maintain the pace set for the month. Not until we tried on our new outfits did we begin to feel like honest-to-goodness soldiers, then we threw out our chests and squared our shoulders with a feeling that we looked mighty imposing and soldierly. We were then informed that we were attached to Company B , 12th Infantry of the regular army, commanded by Captain Edwin E. Aldridge, which was the best drilled company in the regiment. WVe citizens were given to understand that we were expected to maintain that standard, and from our records, I think you will find that we have succeeded. ' The next morning, at 5:30 a. m. at the thrilling notes of an army bugle we plunged into our military life with a vim, when we were lined up in a formation known as reveille. We were then assigned to squads and platoons, which we have gradually become greatly attached to, and we are very proud of every accomplishment of these units. Close order drill was our first work and began on the second day. It followed day after day until the commands of our ofiicers became so familiar and were executed with such precision that the company won much praise from officers attached to Headquarters as well as its immediate commanding ofiicers. The benefits of the concentrated drill were clearly demonstrated when the results of the battalion competition were announced and Company B CMTC won first place in the three events which it entered. Sergeant VVilbur F. Coyle, Jr., won the Blue Course competition, the fifth squad in the first platoon led by Corporal F. D. Fehrman won the squad competition and Private Jack Mathias won the Red Course competition. Great stress was laid upon riHe marksmanshipg we spent many days on the riHe range, accomplishing many things, most important of which were sore shoulders, ringing ears and best company average in the battalion, to say nothing of a great many qualified men which of course means prospective members of the Camp Perry Rifie Team. Of course the daily schedule did not call for all work and no play, and one of the things that tended to break the monotony of all workf' was the athletics in which we were given the opportunity to take part. Did we stand out head and shoulders above the rest of the company in athletics as we did at drill? W'ell, just look at our record and at the same time take a look. at Private Matthew F. Cassidy, the best Welterweight boxer in camp. We also produced a show that would have made the theatrical producers green with envy, the only show exclusively produced by CMTC students. i Page Thirty-:rem 1111111111v11111V111Y1111111111 11111111 G M I E 11 11 11111111 1111Y1i111 1111 111 1
