THE MEDICAL DEPARTMENT A Citizens' Military Camp is thirty days of combined military and physical training. To receive the maximum beneficial effects of such training students must meet certain physical requirements at entrance and be in the best of health throughout the thirty days. To insure these conditions, there were on duty, for the duration of the camp 14 Medical Officers, 3 Dental Officers, 6 Nurses Cfemalej and 52 enlisted men. The personnel of the Medical Department was selected and Scnt to this camp because of its training and record for maintaining the health of large bodies of men. At the opening of the camp 3,595 men were given a complete and thorough physical examination. Of this number 20 were rejected and returned to their homes. Those ac- cepted did not in every case come up to the physical requirements of a soldier, the in- tention being to accept all defects that could be remedied by the camp training and to reject only those with defects which could not be benefited. A record was made of every deviation from the normal and corrective measures instituted either by advice, treatment or letters to his parents informing them of his condition. A special company was formed in which were placed all men who were not able to stand the regular course of training. They were given special diet. Their exercise was graded according to their ability and special exercises prescribed for each individual to correct his condition. The environment of the student was most carefully supervised. His food and water were examined, watched and inspected from their source until consumed by him. A careful check was kept on the kind, quantity and variety of food to see that it met the requirements of his body. Constant supervision of the kitchen insured that the food was prepared under sanitary conditions and served in an appetizing manner. The schedule of instruction allotted certain hours to the Medical Department. These were used for lectures and talks on personal hygiene, camp sanitation, first aid and the correction of physical defects. An attempt was made to impress on every student the principles of healthful living. The Medical Department was so organized that no matter where throughout the Reservation student activities of any kind were in progress, a Medical Officer was present to render first aid in case of an accident or care for any who might become ill. An Infirmary was maintained in each organization area with competent medical personnel on duty 24 hours a day. A 24-hour ambulance service was operated from the Hospital. Ambulances were stationed in each organization area and on the Range and accompanied troops on maneuvers. Only 120 men were admitted to the hospital.
