L THE DEFENDER k f Q is at Our efiicient Ex- ecutive Officer, l,ieut. Colonel 'l'. M. Hunt- er, has had a great work and he did it well. His position is similar to that of the Chief of Staff and it is for him to make decisions and see that all the orders are carried out as given by the Camp Commander. There A was never any dim- culty finding Colonel Hunterg he was al- ways faithful and quick to help as well as to decide what was best for the camp. He saved much of the 'VHQMAS IIUNTIQR VVOI'k that YVOUld have Lirur. Cofmzrl, QillC.,!U. S. flrmy fallen upon our Com- P'xCC t 'c Olhccr manding General and there is much fine comment about his work and the delightful and firm manner in which he conducted his duties. NVe hope for his return next year. Perhaps no one - in Camp handles and approves more papers and gives more de- cisions than does the Camp Adjutant, This year the Camp has t been very fortunate in having Lieut. Col. H. R. Smalley. His genial personality and executive ability have kept things running smoothlyg he was al- ways alert and keen for any suggestion that would help the esprit-de-corps. Lieut. Colonel Smalley was keenly interested in and es- pecially put forth Cvcry CHO,-t loyvard I'l0NVARlJ R.SMA1.i.m' keeping CMTC stu- dents properly caretl forg he also took great interest in the organization of the CMTC band and the general entertainment and recreation for the entire Camp. GN THE DEFENDER FROM THE CAMP COMMANDER CAMP MEADE, MARYLAND, July 30th, 1924 To THE CMTC IVIEN or 1924: It is a pleasure to write this word of appreciation and thanks to you fine young men of the 1924 CMT Camp, whose intelligent and earnest compliance with all instruction produced extraordinary results in the brief period of your stay and incidentally made the work of your instructors a most agree- able duty. The camp life necessarily included a great deal of hard Work which you met cheerfully and willingly even when the reasons therefore were not always apparent to you. By so doing you subjected yourselves to a mental discipline, which, I am sure, steadied and strengthened your character, while the regular life, diet and controlled exercise were quickening and improving you physically and mentally. I think you can hardly doubt that your month at Camp Meade was good for you individuallyg but, more important than this, you should pride yourselves upon the voluntary performance of a high duty to your country. Camps of this character are still in their infancy. You are, therefore, in a sense, pioneers in this great movement which promises incalculable benefit to thewhole manhood of the Nation by the production of higher character, better physique and all the other attributes of preparedness for the duties of the good citizen whether in peace or in war. I hope this book will prove a happy reminder of the mauls job you ac- complished this summer and of a tour of duty, which, in its associations and comradeship, must have contained its full share of pleasure as well as of work. With best wishes for the future of each individual and with repeated assurance of the great pleasure I found in working with you and for you, . I am, Very sincerely yours, H. B. FISKE, Commanding.
