As a corps commander he displayed the same fine qualities that characterized his service with a division. Awarded the Distinguished Ser- vice Cross for extraordinary heroism displayed in action at Santiago, Cuba, July 2, 1898, with the following citation: Charles H. Muir, major general, United States Army, then first lieu- tenant, 2d Infantry, United States Army. For extraordinary heroism in action at Santiago, Cuba, July 2, 1898. At the risk of his life, he voluntarily exposed himself to a heavy hostile artillery and infantry fire in a successful attempt as a sharpshooter to silence a piece of Spanish artillery at the battle of Santiagof, Awarded the Silver Star Cita- tion for gallantry in action against the Insurgents at Taal, Philippine Islands, January 19, 1900. Awarded the Croix de Guerre with Palm by the Government of Pug: Eiglitren Offensive. Commanded the Fourth Army Corps in its operations on the Woevre. . Since the World War General Muir has served at several stations in the United States and on im- portant Boards of Officers. Was Commandant of the Army Service Schools, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, 1919-20, and was in command of Camp Lewis, Washington, when he received orders to proceed to Balti- more to take command of the Third Corps Area, upon the retirement of Major General Bailey, assuming com- mand on December 3, 1922. Awarded the Distinguished Ser- vice Nleclal with the following cita- tion: 'fFor exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services as division and corps commander. Commanding the Twenty-eighth Division during the Argonne-Meuse offensive, and especially in the difficult operations which resulted in the clearing of the Argonne Forest, he proved himself -5 1 4 HORACIE B.
