Newspapers, journals,and magazines of all kinds have widely announced the opportunity of camps. The Xklar Department and the Camps Association hdilitary Training have responded to public interest thru messages by airplanes, radios, moving pie- tures, billboards, poster cards, electric signs, window displays, banners, bands, public meetings and private conferences. Special writers of national fame, notably Arthur Brisbane and Frank Crane, car- ried the message ofthe camps to millions of readers. ln order that this opportun- ity might be fully known the Wlar De- partment prepared and widely circulated two illustrated posters, one 4o x3S and the other Cin colorsj I8 x25 , the latter used also in smaller form on the official application blanks. together with a map which indicated the training centers in all parts of the United States. Beebe, l.t.-Colonel Raymond XV. Briggs and Captain Charles C. l.owe, ORC. Corps Area Commanders issued their own camp announcements in llt- tractive form,notably in the l ifth,which printed a 12 page illustrated pamphlet with the cover in colors. Civilian Aides generally assisted with supplementary publicity material, particularly in the Fourth Corps Area where li. C. Riley, Civilian Aide for the State of Florida, prepared, printed and distributed an artistic I6 page booklet enriched with well-chosen photographs of camp life. hlr. THE DEFENDER f B- ? MILITARY RECORD MAJOR GENERAL CHARLES HENRY MUIR UNITED STATES ARMY Born in Michigan, July 18, 1860. Appointed from Michigan to the United States Military Academy, graduated june 14, 1885, standing No. S in a class of 39 members. Served continuously as an ofiicer of the Regular Army from graduation to the present time, passing through all grades in the Infantry from Second Lieutenant to Colonel. Graduated from U. S. Infantry and Cavalry School, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, in 1895, standing No. 1 in his class, and after- ward serving as instructor in both law and engineering. Served at several Army posts in the West until the breaking out of the Spanish American War. Participated in the campaign against Santiago de Cuba, June 22nd to July 17th, 1898. Served in the occupation of Cuba and afterwards in the suppression of the insur- rection in Philippine Islands. Served as Inspector-Instructor of the Illinois National Guard, 1911 to 1915. Served at various posts in the United States, the Philippine Islands, the IVIexican Border and the Panama Canal Zone until the United States entered the World War, when he was commissioned Brigadier General of the National Army, August 5, 1917 and subsequently promoted to Major General on November 28, 1917. Appointed Brigadier General in the Regular Army on November 0, 1918, and Major General, Regular Army, March 8, 1921.
