THE DEFENDER lag ll FAREWELL OLIVER H. DOCKERY, JR. Colonel, Infantry, U. S. Army Third Corps Area CMTC Ofiicer CMTC! 1924! Wliat a thrill of pleasant memories and happy associations comes back to thousands of manly young American Citizens in the meaning of those four Letters and Figures,-CMTC! 1924! Since the Citizens' Military Training Camps were started in 1921, more than ten thousand young men have attended them in this Corps Area with 3,444 at Camp Meade this year-the biggest, best and most popular CMT Camp ever held-and General Fiske C The Old Mannj says: Our high class men themselves made this Camp what it was this year and to them is due the credit, God Bless 'em! Many of those who were at Meade have purchased copies of this Defender , the CMTC Annual which is the official history in attractive form of that memorable month of their lives with the group pictures of themselves and their Comrades. The CMTC Questionaire, answered by all attendants at the close of Camp in july, shows the true sentiments of their hearts, where practically everyone joined heartily in praising the Camp, its training schedules, the food served, accommodations in barracks, the recreations and diversions, its physical developments and moral and religious influences and practically all expressed their intentions to come back next year. Truly a remark- able record ofthe character and conduct of these representative young men from the good States of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia! But what less could be expected in a Military Training Camp, Where only 19 out of 3,444 had to be sent home for disciplinary reasons? These young men, assembled together on a common ground of equality, comradeship and patriotism, represented the best blood and citizenship of their generation, a true cross-section of sterling young American manhood, the leaders of the future and defenders of the Nation. All honor to those Whose long and faithful Work made the CMTC such a success, to General Fiske, the Camp Commander, and his worthy staff and assistants, who handled their problems so Well, to the earnest, hard-Working CMTC enrollment agencies, Whose efforts brought these high class young men to the Camp. We must not forget Chaplain J. Monroe Stick, and his competent staff of Editorial Assistants, who prepared The De- fender for publication, and the Military Training Camps Association, which made its publication possible. All these have rendered a great and grateful service to many thous- ands concerned, not alone to CMTC graduates, but also to their parents, relatives and friends back home.
