THE DEFENDER sf? N 1 A 'I H L E T I C S MfXJOR MEDORUM CRAWFORD, JR. '-'sv f Supervised athletics were held daily from 2 to 3 p. m., Saturdays and Sundays excepted. During this period the activities are by means of massed games and calis- thenics under the personal super- vision of experts in each sport. The purpose of this particular kind of activity is to effect proper co- ordination of movement and scien- tilie development of the human body. From 3 to 4 p. m., athletic instruction is given to those who elect the same. During this period special coaching in track and Held athletics, in boxing and in summer football practice. These are under men of wide experience in order that students may prepare them- selves for sports while at their respective institutions, and further that they may learn to know and care for their bodies and hence be physically lit for their work in future life. A baseball league was established and games were played every day with the exception of Saturdays and Sundays. Three great athletic events took place during the month, the of the RCTC attending campg the next for the members of the CNITCQ and finally a dual meet between the ROTC and CMTC. In addition, a swimming meet was held. Gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded point winners in the above meets. Large silver cups were also awarded to the highest point winner in the meet. The athletic program during the afternoon has been made as extensive and elaborate as time and facilities permit and this program greatly benefited all students. To give an idea of the number of men participating in the several sports, following is the approximate number of candidates who turn out in the afternoon for the various events: football, l50g track and held events, 300g boxing, 250, baseball, 5003 minor sports such as volleyball, medicine ball and the like, 000. Regular hours have been allotted to the several organizations for use of the swimming pool and candidates have an oppor- tunity each day to take advantage of this pool, and approximately 1000 to 1500 men use the pool each day. There was a swimming instructor detailed and also life guards to prevent the occurrence of accidents. The coaches assigned to coach the various forms of athletics were giving their personal supervision to the men who turned out for their respective branches. The coaching received by the candidates was of the West Point System and this system of coaching was closely followed throughout. T l -and . ri g. across from the Red Cross Hut. Again there were the bouts held every uesc ay Thursday night at the theatre in conjunction with the movies. Under the supervision of Chaplain Cleary and Lieutenant Rennagel a series of bouts was held which lasted until the finals of the closing week of Camp. After the companies had picked their best boxers who were to represent them they all pointed to the exhibition bouts which were held in the afternoons. Those fights were fast and furious and were attended with much enthusiasm on the part of the gallery.
