On July 1, 1924, the members of Battery CU arrived at Camp Meade prepared for a month's training. Nlost of the members of the Blue and NVhite courses were in Batteries BH or C in 1923. Many old friendships were renewed when the boys met again this year. We went through the regular routine of being examined and , getting our uniforms so that by the first night in Camp most of us X i were soldiers, at least in appearance. During the first few days some of the candidates had difficulty in hearing first call at 5:45 a. m., but with the able assistance of the other members of the xi: ' Battery they soon learned to snap into it',. Our regular training schedule started the day after we arrived'in Camp. Each day four Blue candidates were detailed as Officers and fifteen White candidates were detailed as non-commissioned Ohicers. During the first part of the month we had a short dis- mounted drill each morning. The members of the Blue Course spent most of their time in school during the first two weeks studying tl1e following subjects: field gunnery, topography, hippology, firing data, conduct of fire, duties of officers and battery mess. The White course also had some class room work including reconnaissance, signal com- munication and duties of non-commissioned officers. While the Blue course was in school in the morning the White and Red courses took equitation, care of animals and equipment and gunners, and cannoneers' drill. The Red course also took pistol marksmanship. Dur- ing the last three weeks we had three mornings of mounted drill with student officers and non-commissioned officers in charge of the battery. VVe had one day of service practice with the Blue candidates firing the problems and the White candidates acting as gunners and section leaders. Our big social event of the season was the banquet which we had on July 28. Our mess hall was decorated for the occasion, and we had music by the 6th F. A. orchestra. The regular officers of Battery C were present and also the reserve officers attached to the CMTC Camp. Souvenirs were given to the officers and to all of the candidates. The banquet was a great success and was enjoyed by everyone. Much of the success of the CMTC battery was due to our officers. Lieutenant Colonel Birnie in command of the 6th Field Artillery was known by everyone. Captain Phillips, the Commander of CU Battery, was also the Commander of the CMTC battery and the instructor in equitation. Lieutenant Cort X- instructed the Blue course in service practice, field gunnery and con- duct of fire. Lieutenant Blanchard instructed the Blue course in topography and orientation. Lieutenant Mitchell was the athletic instructor and also the instructor in dismounted drill. Captain Milne was the instructor in Hippology and Lieutenant Horton instructor in battery mess. The other instructors were Lieutenant Long in duties of cannoneers, Lieutenant Keyser in communication, Lieutenant P4 ij 5 ' Patton in citizenship, Lieutenant Hampel in pistol marksmanship ' and Lieutenant Kratzke in the care of animals. fit ti Page Om' Hundred Twelve V v.v.V.V.v.v. . . - . . . . . 4 . . .
