Qi We, the Juniors of '41, started out in '38 as seventemf ag, verdant Freshmen. Class officers were Lon Braoh, President, 751 Metabolle Hilliard, Vice Presidentg Louise Mendenhall, Sec- Lgj retaryg and Hobart Kiger, Treasurer. The teachers were Mr. fQQ!L. P. Henson, our class Sponsorg Mr. O. S. Barnard, and Mr. EmflKelly Taylor. Mrs. Uphoff took the place of Mr. Henson when gg: he resigned his position in Qisne High School. Several boys played Basketball, and J. Ayers received a letter. We entertained the whole school with a Christmas Party in the gym. We enjoyed the other parties given throughout the yearg and, on the last day of school, we went to St. Louis on a picnic. Before we knew it our vacation was over, andwe returned to school not as Verdant Freshmen but as Snappy Bophomores. We now had fourteen in our class. We had the misfortune of losing Louise Mendenhall and then Harry Blllingtong but we were fortu- nate ln getting Jack Williams and Ivan Barker. Our class offi- cers were Wilma Miller, President: J. Ayers, Vice Presidentg and Willis Crooks, Secretary-Treasurer. Our teachers were Mr. Kelly Taylor, our class Sponsorg Miss Marguerite Summers,and1k.O. S. Barnard. Jack Williams and J. Ayers lettered in Basketball this season. Our class was greatly reduced in our Junior year as J. Ayers went to Colorado for his healthg and Wilma Miller, Willis Crooks, and Arlene Dickey attended different schools. Lon Brach withdrew about thendddle ofthe first semester and Jack Willlams withdrew the second semester. We were fortunate in having Ennis Gibson of Mexia, Texas join our class. We had many haopy experiencasg but, aside from gradu- ation, the making ofthe annual was, perhaps, the most outstan. ing.' As all good things must end, our school days here at Cisne High School must end also. We shall never, forget thetm-r way our knees wobbled and the way our voices quivered when we marched up and said nThank youu for our diplomas. So, with a mingled feeling of sorrow and happiness, turning our faces toward next year and the schools we shall my attend then. As I was about to pass by, a natlve girl came down the old path and stopped me. She was dressed ln brlght colors, and told me that her name was Ma- damamazon. She asked me to let her tell my fortune and to my delight she spoke of my classmates of Clsne Hlch School. I ask her to tell me what each one of my classmates were doing, and this is the answer shefqave me: Glenn Galbraith ls now presldelt of the GALBRATTH EROS WATCH CO., Clsne's largest manufacturing establishment. Hls most startling invention ls a sun-dial that can be used in the black hours of the nlght. Metabelle Hilliard la now a great opera singer. Her 'tal- ent woe recognized when she saw a mouse ln the living room. She was running wildy down Broadway when she was rescued by the manager of the Metropalltaln Opera Co. The manager engaged the Fire Department to catch her so that the greatest find of his life would not escape. Ennis Gibson ls riding his own horse ln the nKentucky Ter- byn, the horse ls the first cousin to the world famous 'Spark Plugu. J t last week 'Hammerhockn, Enn1s'a horse, won over Spark Sfhalr. Q2 '+ 'rw is Montgome y is now one of Roosevelt's right-hand men. His job ls taking him to all parts of the World. He travels ln a Pullman wlth Mr. Roosevelt, and has proved his ability to do a job of great lmportance., Otls's work, that requires the mzst intelligence, is earring Mr. Roosevelt's cone. Robert Squire, now known as Bobbie Dean, is getting much publlclty ln New York. He is now plavlng ln a show on Browd- wny. Robert, better known as Bobbie Donn, ls the star of the production. The most astonishing fact is that the Star appears not once in tho entire performance but provides all off-stage noises. Evelyn Lowe ls the first woman to be elected from the 46th District to Congress. She was elected by u great majority on the Democratic ticket ln 1954. Her vocabulary, which won her the Senctorshlp was acquired during her young married life with her Round Prairie-hubby. a u.a14w3fQ' v2 J .Lf f ' ' z' 1 5 4: ' ' 4+ gg. ' ,.g. Soon after school began we were initiated at a party in the gymnasium, after which we felt we were full-pledeednwmbers of Cisne High School and were weprmdll Our class sponsor was Nr. Barnard. We enjoyed two other parties during the term, a Christ- mas party and a Valentlne party. That happy year ended with e school picnic at Mt. Vernon park. Before we knew it vacation was over and .ourQ Sophomore year had rolled around. This time we enrolled with a firmer smile, feeling much more sure of ourselves than we had the year before. During this term we lost two students, Harry Flllington and Byron Barrett. Lois Walker, who was not one of our group as freshmen, joined us as sophomores. Most of the boys took part ln basketball while the girls took part ln the G. A. A. We also acquired some new members, Edna McGill, James Morris, and later on Rovenis Payne, whom we were very glad to have. The whole team had to be built around him. The first game of the season proved to us that we were not going to be disappointed in him. Before the second bame Bill met with a serious accident that would have stopped most players for the rest of the season, but not Bill! He was back in th game before Christmas, doing his best even though he knew every game meant suffering for him. Bill is a swell ball handler and a long-shot artist. We are expecting great things from this six-foot-three-inch boy next year. Ellsworth Duke - -Forward- Ellsworth, being one of the boys depended upon for this year's team, came through in excellent form. His speciality was long shots although he kept his opponents plenty worried with his one handed shots. He was also a good rebounder and was fighting in there all the time. As he is only a sopo- more, wa're expecting a lot from him next year. Neil Long -Forward- Neil, another sophomore, came through with flying colors this year. Neil is one of the scrappiest ball players on the team. Neil is a good ball-handler and has a one-handed shot that scored nmny points this year. He was fast and was alyays in there. The members of our staff are eight in number and it has kept us hustling and hurrying to get the hook published in time. We have tried to present a better annual in a smaller number of pages by putting ell our effort into our work. If one should happen to glance in at ns while wo were. at work, he would see a confusion of boys and girls going about their various tasks with papers and other articles piled so hgh that you could scarcely describe it. The various other persons, other than the staff, who have contributed to the writing of the different articles are looked upon with thanks from the eight brain-wrecked members of 'this 'Echo' staff. We wish to thank B111 Jd1nson in particular, who has written up the sports section of the annual. The annual has kept us busy for several weeks, scratching our heads and trying to think of various wave 0' imoroving it, and we are glad that we have succeeded as well as we have. As a whole, the staff wishes to thank Miss Leach for the good work which she has done in making the annual what it is. McCrae In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our plaeeg and in the sky The larks still bravely singing fly, Scarce heard amidst the guns bulow. We ere the dead. Short days ego We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lic In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe! To you from falling hands we throw The torch. Bc yours to hold it high! If ye break faith with us who die, We shell not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. Contributed by Metabel TREES By Joyce Kilmer I think that I shell never see A poem lovely as a tree, A tres whose hungry mouth is pressed Against the earth's sweet flowing breas A tree that looks at God all day And lifts her leafy arms to prayg A tree that may in summer wear A nest of robins in her hairy Upon whose bosom snow has laing Who intimately lives with rain. Poems are made by fools like mc, But only God can make a tree.
