Today very few communities are as purely agriculturalas this area. In the days of early settlers of our country, our state, and our community, a very high percentage of these folks derived their living from the soil. As the years have passed those engaged in pursuits of agriculture have become more efficient in their work. As a result, the number of farmers continues to grow less while the population of our country grows rapidly. Today in this Empire state very few com- munities earn their livlihood from agriculture although this area continues to earn its living from farming. Farmers enjoy more freedom than their friends from centers of population and are, therefore, noted for being more independent than people in other walks of life. It is necessary to guard against becoming too conservative and thus be too far behind thetimes. However, the opportunity to experiment with new ways is always present. We note that our rural schools in New York State have made tremendous progress in the past three decades and are now examples of the finest in the land. As many country boys and girls as their city counterparts go on for further education. They are as well dressed, as well mannered, and as well poised as their city cousins. Many of the handicaps of farm life have disappeared with the advent of automobiles and specialized farm equipment. Yet most of the freedom and independence of our forefathers has been preserved. I, there- fore, most sincerely feel that you cannot find a more honorable and satisfying way of life than that of living from the soil. H. D. F acult y Division Page EDUCATION Mark Hopkins sat on the end of a log And a farm boy sat on the other. Mark Hopkins came as a pedagogue And taught as a elder brother. I don't care what Mark Hopkins taught, If his Latin was small and his Greek was naught, For the farmer boy he thought, thought he, All through lecture time and quiz, The kind of a man I mean to be Is the kind of a man Mark Hopkins is. Theology, languages, medicine, law, Are peacock feathers to deck a daw If the boys who come from your splendid schools Are well-trained sharpers or flippant fools. You may boast of your age and your ivied walls, Your great endowments, your marble halls And all your modern features, Your vast curriculum's scope and reach And the multifarious things you teach - But how about your teachers? Are they men who can stand in a father's place, Who are paid, best paid, by an ardent face When boyhood gives as boyhood can, Its love and faith to a fine, true man? No printed word nor spoken plea Can teach yotmg hearts what men should be, Not all the books on all the shelves, But what the teachers are, themselves. Our com- munity's farm families reap real value from the school's life - related offerings in agriculture - homemaking, business methods, and driver education. In Junior High School youth may early explore these fields as well as the basic citizenship and language arts courses. Vocational, educational and personal guidance and a well organized emphasis on personal health round out our school's program for the ed- ucation of the whole child.
