'IIiE ZKRIHHIVHE 1959 CIN CIN N ATI COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL WE DEDICATE, This issue of the Archive to Mrs. William J. Btockman and Mrs. Edward C. Schlotman--two long time members of the School family who are as much responsible for the smooth running of Country Day as anyone, from the Trustees on down. 6mm??? These two secretaries have a total of nearly twentyeeight years of loyal service under three headmasters of the School, Mrs. Brockman came in May, 1944, during Harwood Ellists last year; and Mrs. Schlotman followed in August, 1945, after Ronald Dixon's first year. With the exception of one year's interruption both have been here ever since and have seen the growth from 63 boys to a total co- educational enrollment of 350. To recount the part that they play in the life of Country Day would be to touch every activity except actual teaching, and even here most of us realize that we have learned a lot from them. Book- store, correspondence, orders, filing, telephone, duplicating, records, helping the Archive staff and other organizations, paying salaries, and bills, bookkeeping, greeting Visitors, lending a sympathetic ear, and in general being the expeditor and steadying influence in a large and very human organization are part of their long list of accomplish- merits. We extend our warm good wishes to Florence Brockman and Maye Schlotman, and we wish them many more years of friendly, efficient helpfulness to the School. IUNTENTE Dedica'liou ........-.--.2. J im Giannestras 43 Steve Schmidt 1958 Football Season Country Day's 1958 varsity football season was one of the most successful in the school's history Led by co-captains Jim Giannesttas and Pete Strauss, the team bounced back with seven straight victories after losing the opener to Madeira. Besides having the fourth best record in the area, C. D. also ranked fourth in the city in offensive scoring with 247 points, a school record. For the greater partaof the season, the team consisted of Don Schroeder and Gil GillesPie at ends, Pete Strauss and John Berk at tackles. Will Heathcote and Pete Blanchard at guards, and Pete Visset at center. The backfield included Rusty Reaves at quarterback, Jim Giannestras and John Mount at halfbacks, and Steve Schmidt at fullback. The offensive attack was well balanced with the hard running of Schmidt and Giannesttas, the speedy, elusive running of Mount. and the passing of Reeves, who threw for nine touchdowns. The scoring was equally distributed with each member of the backfield scoring at least six touchdownsi Schmidt being the leader with 58 points. The season opened at Madeira with the Mustangs avenging last year s defeat 24-14. C, D. then came back with a 16-6 win over New Richmond and began its seven game winning streak. The next two games were easy for the Indians as they walioped Batavia, 56-0, and Williamsburg, 36-8. After a tw0-week layoff C. D. met Amelia, undefeated and champions of the Clermont County League. The Indians proceeded to pull a 26 w20 upset, the winning touchdown being scored in the last minute of play. Next Country Day took on Park School for the Tri-State trophy and C. D. soundly defeated its Indianapolis foe, 39-0. An equally important game followed with atch-rival Indian Hill, and C. D. again brought home the traditional head-dress which goes to the winner. The score was 46-0. In the season's finale the Indians edged past Milford, 12-6, for its first win over that school in six years. This was a fitting ending to the season of one of Country Day's finest football teams. The next week the team went to Columbus to play in the state Class A base- ball tournament. They came up against Northwestern from Toledo in the semiefinals. In the first inning Northwestern scored the only run of the game on two errors and a disputed play at the home plate in which the Country Day catcher, Mike Grace, was called for interference when he ran out in front of the plate to stop a runner from stealing home. C. D. held Northwestern scoreless for the rest of the game. but Country Day was not able to score desPite the fact that several men got on base. After the first inning C. D. had tremendous fielding as several double plays Were reeled off and Rusty Reaves made some sensational stops at third. Andy Luther held Northwestern to only three hits and all in all had a marvelous season. 54 L: :IL, aha 7th 8: 8th Baseball BACK ROW: Mr. Irwin, Ralph Nelson, Steve Watson, Ward Lamson, Tom Foote, Tim More, Sandy Warner.
