Page Six The Presidents Message AS THE close of the school year draws near, we are reminded that the members of the Class of 1939 will soon be numbered with the graduates and former students of The Cincinnati Bible Seminary. WE REJOICE to see you complete the courses of study leading to the various degrees you seek and receive the proper recognition of your efforts to prepare yourselves for your life work. We are happy to see you eagerly enter upon your service in the harvest fields of our Lord. THE JOY of the Season, however, is tempered somewhat with a feeling akin to sadness. While we rejoice in your preparedness to serve and are happy that you are now to begin your service, we do not like to say goodbye. THIS FEELING of mingled joy and sadness, felt at every graduation exercise, is especially keen as we come to the Commencement of 1939, because I have had the honor and the pleasure of serving as your sponsor for the past four years. DURING THIS time our relations have always been cordial and now that you are about to leave your Alma Mater, we regret that these frequent and happy associations must end. HOW VIVIDLY I recall the first meeting of your class! Your hopes, your earnest- ness, your consecration, and loyalty to the Seminary, so emphatically expressed then, have characterized all of your endeavors since. IT HAS been a source of great encouragement to know that I could always rely upon you for any help you could give to promote the interests of our beloved school. Your readiness to receive counsel, your willingness to serve and the many expressions of your personal friendship have endeared you all to me, until you seem in truth, to be my very children in the Lord. AND NOW that the time has almost arrived when I shall no longer serve as your sponsor and teacher, I wish to express to you individually and as a class, my indebted- ness to you for the joy your friendship has brought nie. A'S YOU leave The Cincinnati Bible Seminary to find the place in the world, where you can best serve your Lord, our best wishes, our affection and our prayers for your happiness and your usefulness shall always accompany you. THE FOUR years that you have spent in the Seminary have been years crowded with important and far-reaching events which shall determine the character and policy of your Alma Mater for generations yet to come. IT HAS not been an easy task to keep the Seminary moving steadily forward in influence and power for Christ, keeping faith with the founders and true to Him for whose glory it was established. THE FORCES of liberalism and infidelity have been augmented each year by the graduates of atheistic colleges and universities, who have assumed places of leadership in government and society. The graduates of modernistic theological institutions have contributed their full strength to the forces opposing the faith in Christ Jesus. THE DEMAND that Christian colleges shall be standardized as to czzrricula, educa- tional requirements for teachers, endowment and physical equipment is constantly be- coming more insistent. The requirements for such standardization are often determined by the forces of atheism, infidelity and modernism and are identical for atheistic, liberal, and Christian schools. Schools that do not meet these requirements are discredited, regardless of their high ideals and the scholarly character of their work. THE CINCINNATI BIBLE SEMINARY does not seek academic recognition by comply- ing with such regulation because it is a professional school preparing its students for Christian service. Nevertheless the force of the drive for standardization is constantly felt.

As YOU enter upon your work in the field your freedom in Christ will be constantly threatened by this same force for it pervades every field of human activity. RUGGED INDIVIDUALISM is decried in business and finance. Those who by frugality, hard work, and sane investment have been able to accumrlate a fortune are considered enemies of the public weal, regardless of their great benefactions and sterling character. The freedom of life and action that has made our country the foremost nation of the world is now held to be undesirable. THIS SAME spirit has laid hold on the Church of Christ. Leaders demand that all missionary endeavor shall be directed by a central board. Independent missions and missionaries are spoken against. It is desired that all money shall be given to approved agencies to be used for approved missionaries who follow approved methods. We are advised that only students who have been trained in approved theological schools are entitled to be ordained and that all others should be discouraged. ANY ORGANIZATION, school, or individual, daring to challenge the forces of stand- ardization necessarily feels their displeasure. So intense is the conflict that many of our people have grown weary of the battle and have affected a compromise with the forces of evil. SUCH COMPULSION is entirely foreign to the spirit and teaching of the Lord Jesus Christ and His inspired apostles and is inimical to the free Churches of Christ. YOUR ALMA MATER battles to maintain the liberty that is Ours in Christ Jesus and therefore contends earnestly for the faith once for all delivered to the saints. That the position of the school 1nay be clearly seen the following paragraph from The Policy of The Cincinnati Bible Seminary is called to your attention: THE WORK of the Seminary is conducted independently of all other agencies and organizations. The school is happy to cooperate with all other agencies as far as they follow the teaching and spirit of the Word of God, but no farther. The Seminary desires no direction or control of other agencies and resents any suggestion of control from them. The Cincinnati Bible Seminary recognizes responsibility only to God and the donors and friends who have made the work of the institution possible. YOUR ALMA MATER calls upon the class of 1939 and all loyal Alumni for unani- mous cooperation in maintaining the freedom and integrity of the Seminary so that the school may continue to send forth intrepid young men and women who will dare to contend for the truth and who will die as martyrs, rather than compromise with error and thus deny the faith. SUCH A course will require courage and the sacrifice of personal comfort and pleasure. It will bring hardship, the loss of friends and the scars of battle. But it will bring the peace that passeth understanding, the satisfaction of duty done and the smile of approval of the great Leader who guides, guards, defends and rewards his soldiers. MAY YOU resolve in the depth of your hearts to be good soldiers of Christ Jesusg may you always have a good conscience toward God and men, may you fight the good fight of the faith, without faltering or flinching. Stand fast in the liberty wherein Christ hath made you free. Be not entangled in any yoke of bondage. THIS IS the way of life, the way of peace, the way of self respect and honor, this is the way that leads to life eternal. MAY GOD bless you, each and all, and keep you in this way is the earnest prayer of your sponsor, your teacher and your friend. IW Page Seven
