Uss CIMARRON qAo-225 U S CIMARRON, grand old lady of the fleet, pumper of precious oil, mover of mail and movies, carrier of cargo. This is her story.. Conceived as a civilian tanker and acquired by the Navy prior, to her completion, CIMARRON was built on the ways of the Sun ShipfBuilding Co., and commissioned in the Spring of 1939. Upon joining the fleet CIMARRON served in both the Atlantic and Pacific prior ,to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. In every major campaign of the Pacific war CIMARRON was there, With Halsey, Mitchner, and Doolittle 's Raid- ers, in the Coral Sea, at Guadacanal, and Okinawa, millions of barrels of oil flowed from deep in her tanks giving life and movement to a powerful fleet. ' ln Korea, at Quemoy-Matsu, with the Taiwan patrol, CIMARRON was on the job never stopping, rarely resting and receiv- ing a Navy Unit Citation for her efforts. Proud, poised, purposeful,the CIMARRGN, a venerable 27 years old, continues on yet today. The waters of Vietnam teem with Navy ships of all types and CIMARRON is among them, providing services and carrying on in the tradition set many years ago.
