FUELING AT SEA An oiler must be an integral part of any fleet at sea. No ship could perform her tasks for any extended period of time without replenishing her fuel supply. This replenishment is the mission of an oiler such as the Cimarrong it is the primary purpose for her being. It is easy to see the paramount importance of our mission. The ships of the Navy depend on the constant flow of a thin ribbon of black, oil and therefore replenish- ment facilities must be near at all times. During this cruise the Cimarron has pumped over gallons of black oil to all types of ships, ranging from huge carriers to small destroyers. Black oil is not the only commodity the Cim handles. Jet fuel - JP5 - for jet aircraft and aviation gasoline - Avgas - for the propeller aircraft are also carried. When the Cimarron engages in underway replenish- ment, it is an all hands evolution. Every department has assigned tasks to perform. C ooperation is the keynote of any unrep. Operations Department plans the unrep with regard to course, speed, communications, and the overall tactical situation. The Deck Department handles the endless maze of hoses and rigging thatfmust be extended to the ship alongside. Engineering Department is responsible for the actual pumping of fuel to the recieving ship. The Supply Department computes and accounts for the quantity of fuel transferred. Cimarron is proud to state that she has never. missed a commitment during the past cruise. This is a tribute not only to her excellent training and pre- paration, but also to the high degree of spirited dedication of her officers and men.
