Conceived as a civilian tanker and acquired by the Navy prior, to her completion, CIMARRON was built on the ways of the Sun ShipfBuilding Co., and commissioned in the Spring of 1939. Upon joining the fleet CIMARRON served in both the Atlantic and Pacific prior ,to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. In every major campaign of the Pacific war CIMARRON was there, With Halsey, Mitchner, and Doolittle 's Raid- ers, in the Coral Sea, at Guadacanal, and Okinawa, millions of barrels of oil flowed from deep in her tanks giving life and movement to a powerful fleet. ' ln Korea, at Quemoy-Matsu, with the Taiwan patrol, CIMARRON was on the job never stopping, rarely resting and receiv- ing a Navy Unit Citation for her efforts. Proud, poised, purposeful, the CIMARRGN, a venerable 27 years old, continues on yet today. The waters of Vietnam teem with Navy ships of all types and CIMARRON is among them, providing services and carrying on in the tradition set many years ago. coMMANDiNc oFFiCER if , F ,i L Q 1 -CAPT. BATTLE EFFICEENCY AWARD The Battle Efficiency award for fiscal year 1966 was awarded to the Cimarron as the best all around oiler in her class. Competing among eleven oilers of the Pacific Fleet, the Cim' proved to be tops and came away with the prize. Com- petition is based on ability in navigation, communications , seamanship, damage con- trol, engineering, gunnery, and most im- portant, day to day performance. The Cim' now wears proudly the coveted E on her bridge and flies the battle efficiency pennant. The competition is keen and the final results were close. The award is but official recognition of the dedication and diligence that has long been a hallmark of the Cimarron and her gallant crew. I What is CIMARRON? The correct answer is - 24,830 gross tons of the oldest metal on continuous active duty in the U.S. Navy today. ls this in itself Worth noting? Yes, to some extent. Perhaps though a better question is - what makes CIMARRON? The correct answer is - 300 fine young officers and men of the quality that our great country is noted for producing. This meld of the old and the young has embellished a new lustre to the Navy's shield of accomplishment during this year of our Lord 1966. A fictitious Admiral in James Michener's novel T-he Bridges of Toko-Ri , informed of the ultimate sacrifice of a member of his command, stated, Where do We find such men? We don't find them, we borrow them from you parents, wives and loved ones, and for you and country they are what they are, It is with a great deal of pride then that We present to you the pictorial story of the 1966 western Pacific deployment of the legendary CIMARRON as experienced by the latest and perhaps most proficient of her many illustrious crews, It is hoped that by reliving with us many of our moments of glory, some of the tortures of separation will be forgotten, T x EXECUTIVE GFFICER f A LCDR THOMAS W TROUT U S NAVY Lieutenant Commander Trout enlisted 1n the Navy during WW II at age 17 and served about 2 1X2 years After the war ended he attended Ohio State University for one year and then accepted an appointment to the U S Naval Academy graduating as anEns1gn in 1951 He served as a deck officer on board the USS WORCESTER CCL 1443 before going to Pensacola where he was designateda naval aviator in 1953 LCDR Trout was attached to Jet fighter and attack squadrons until 1957 deploying with At lanti c and Mediterranean Fleets on the carriers INTREPID ROOSEVELT and SARATOGA Shore duty brought assignments as jet flight instructor, a staff officer with Naval Air Advance Train- ing Command, and postgraduate student at Naval Intelli- gence School The Commander then went overseas to Spain for a two year tour as Assistant Naval Attache, Madrid, after which he was assigned to an A4D Squadron. In 1963 he rejoined the surface Navy as navigator of USS BOSTON CCAG lb for two Mediterranean cruises, and joined CIMARRON in 1964. Approximately one third ofthe crew is directly connected with some phase of engineering. There is no area aboard ship that does not at some time or other fall under the watchful eye of this department. The range and scope of the snipes are many and varied: M Division is con- cerned with the smooth operation of our main propulsion machineryg B. Division insures the proper flow of steam from our four boilersg E Division maintains and controls our electric al power and equipment through- out every space aboard shipg A Division sees to it that our Winches, launches, refrigeration gear, and anyother auxiliary machinery are kept in superb conditiong R Division divides its time between the delicate tasks of cargo handling and damage control procedures. Each of the preceding could be subdivid- ed into a maze of assorted tasks. It is enough to say that any member of the depart- ment must be well versed in a variety of skills. Though their tasks be many and arduous, the men of the Engineering Department take a fierce pride inajob well done. CIMARRON is proud and indeed grateful to have these fine men as her ever watchful guardians. The Deck Departmentis responsible for all topside spaces and gear on the ship. This responsibility increases in importance on an oiler, which maintains fueling rigs and transfer stations at various locations. On the Cimarron the Deck Department is divided into three divisions: First Division maintains the forward part of the ship, These men service and operate such equip- 20 ment as the ground tackle, motor whale boat, and utility boat. Second Division is responsi- ble for the after part of the ship, maintaining the Captain's Gig, Motor Launch, and three replenishment stations. Fox Division is the gunnery and fire control division. Their task is to guard the safety of our ship and men by maintaining our five inch mounts in sure fire working condition. Aside from thier primary duties, the men of the Deck Department fulfill avariety of collateral tasks, the most important of these being bridge and sentry watCheS- There is a tremendous amount of Cimarron heritage and tradition to be maintained by these men ofthe sea. As we listen once more to the shrill pipe of the Bos'n's whistle, We know with certainity that these high standards are being upheld. FIRST DIVISEG C Top Row: Rogers, T. BM 3, Crawford, D. The technological knowledge and training that is part of each member of this depart- ment is honed to a fine edge. The radarmen, in our Combat Information Center, plot any contacts and provide Warning of approach- ing vessels so that our bridge may take early and correct action. Our external communic ations were ably handled electron- ically by our radiomen and visually by our signalmen. Our quartermasters determine ship's position, maintain all charts and navigational instruments, and keep a log of all important events occurring on the ship, The delicate job of repair of all our intricate electronic gear is managed by our electronic technicians. The yeomen. main- tain the multitude of correspondence that is part of the daily-routine of aship, and the personnelmen see to it that the files and records of each man are kept up to date. Last to be mentioned but certainly not least are the corpsmen who see to it that the health and well being of the crew is kept at the high standards the Navy demands. It is evident that the Operations department is composed of many and varied ratings, yet they all Work as a team to get their important tasks completed. No ship could perform her tasks for any extended period of time without replenishing her fuel supply. This replenishment is the mission of an oiler such as the Cimarrong it is the primary purpose for her being. It is easy to see the paramount importance of our mission. The ships of the Navy depend on the constant flow of a thin ribbon of black, oil and therefore replenish- ment facilities must be near at all times. During this cruise the Cimarron has pumped over gallons of black oil to all types of ships, ranging from huge carriers to small destroyers. Black oil is not the only commodity the Cim handles. Jet fuel - JP5 - for jet aircraft and aviation gasoline - Avgas - for the propeller aircraft are also carried. When the Cimarron engages in underway replenish- ment, it is an all hands evolution. Every department has assigned tasks to perform. C ooperation is the keynote of any unrep. Operations Department plans the unrep with regard to course, speed, communications, and the overall tactical situation. The Deck Department handles the endless maze of hoses and rigging thatfmust be extended to the ship alongside. Engineering Department is responsible for the actual pumping of fuel to the recieving ship. The Supply Department computes and accounts for the quantity of fuel transferred. Cimarron is proud to state that she has never. missed a commitment during the past cruise. This is a tribute not only to her excellent training and pre- paration, but also to the high degree of spirited dedication of her officers and men. Signals flash in the air. An unrep is near. The replenishment detail is set and the men move quickly to ready the lines, Winches, and other gear. The signal flags indicate our course and speed as a rapidly approaching customer moves into position. The sun shone bright and clear as the crew in their fresh liberty whites assembled to hear Captain Dewing and Captain Heg read their respective orders. The ceremony was short and simple as the two skippers completed the change of command, and Captain Dewing said goodby to the men who had served under him since August of 1965. In afew minutes, the formalities complete, the commissioning pennant was hauled down and presented to Captain Dewing as another was run up to replace it, signifing a new man at the helm of Cimarron. The Cimarron anchored a short distance from the beach as the Repose, listing slightly to port, began her approach. But the modern floating hospital came in a bit to close and before she could correct the error, her bow had made a slight dent in the side of the Cimarron. Under the watchful eye of hundreds of spectators on both ships the Repose moored alongside and the refueling began. A junk is overturned, the men are in the water. And so began the drama on a warm August afternoon while the Cimarron was attempting to gingerly pick her way through a maze of Vietnamese fishing boats. Unable to manouver clear, the boat narrowly missed the stem of the ship and was swamped by the bow wave. The Cim' immediately swung about and put its whale boat in the water to render assistance. Fortu- nately no one was injured and there was only minor damage to the junk. The overturned hull was towed back to the ship where it was righted and bailed out. A gift of rice, fruit, fresh water, and manila line, sent the fishermen on their way under the watchful eye of a swift boat. Righted once more, the bailing begins. Coming alongside. Many times the task to be performed is long and arduous with little time for rest and relaxation. The brief periods of leisure are usually filled with those events that best develop a 'spirit of unity and cooper- ation among the crew. The Cimarron has always endeavored to supply it's men with a wide range of activities during the idle hours. Sporting events such as softball, bowling, golf, swimming, and skeet shooting abound. There is a keen rivalry between depart- ments and divisions, and a challenge is never left unanswered. Of course, movie call is always popular and there is an ., L. ..,. Activities also includes such events as inspections and advancement in rate. We must also by necessity include the miscellaneous category-the time spent with a good book, writing letters to loved ones, shooting the bull, and general loafing. Everyone needs a certain amount of leisure activity, a brief period away f1nOIf1 the worry and tension of his job. The Cimarron sailor tries to use this time to best advantage so that he might capably perform his demanding tasks in the com- pletion of the vital mission of our modern Navy. It has beena journey that has carried us south to the Philippines, west to Vietnam, and north to Japan. Danger and excite- ment, tedium and boredom, hard work and horseplay have been our watchwords. Heading east, the Cim now looks homeward. Soon she will be coming down LOOKING HOMEWARD the Catalina Channel and rounding the breakwater into Long Beach harbor. And there after seven months, two weeks, and three days, the Westpac cruise ends. While it is true that the Cimarron will sail again and that new adventures will be spawned, they will never replace the ones of the cruiseuof '66, ljlfgr Q ' i t ulbogmpxndanqmaby WAISWORTH Maxtelinu.
