One of our proud- est memories was the day we entered the new doors of CHS and took our places in the shiny new classrooms. How we appreciated the spaciousness of our new school! How vast the gymnasium looked as we gazed upon it for the first time! We will re- member the many times we cheered our teams to victory, the memorable proms, eating lunch with the gang at our new cafeteria, the times we were last minute Ubookwormsf' and all the honors we received and friendships we made with both teachers and class- mates. It was not uncommon to see girls wearing leotards and every fam- ily had a hulahoop. A rocket to the moon was in all the news headlines. These are but a few of our treasured moments. But most of all we will remember our dear alma mater. As the curtain rises, you will View the many scenes of our MOMENTS TO REMEMBER at Churubusco High School. Producers 8. This should benefit every student in getting a good education. He has supported all the athletic activities and has encouraged everyone to participate in and attend all sports events. He has also helped to arrange intramural activities of volleyball and basketball, ping-pong tournaments, and noontime dancing in the Home Ec. Room. Other extra-cur- ricular activities he has encouraged are the Science and Camera Clubs. Mr. Smith also teaches government and co-spon- sors the senior class. Secretaries Mrs. Zolman has kept herself very busy all year keeping the business transactions of the school in order. Pat Fromn gave up her assembly periods to help with the minor details and also to learn some office experience. Hermione McCoy serves as clerk to Mr. Clare Alexander, grade school principal, this past year. She answered the tele- phone and served as cashier for the lunch fund in the elementary school, as well as helping with attendance records. Grade Principal Mr. Alexander devotes his days to general supervision of fifteen grade school rooms. Just a few years ago there were only 15 teachers in the grade and high school. Superintendent Our superintendent of schools was Mr. Yoder. Through Mr. Yoder's office filtered the various activities which we had with other county schools. Mr. Yoder and his office co-ordinated the various phases of our school program. His office was re- sponsible for the organizing of the inter-school athletic and speech programs. Through an as- sembly of county teachers. which met with him. the various school books were chosen. His office was also responsible for the setting of our school calendar. Without Mr. Yoder's help, our school could not function so efficiently as it does. Trustees Our school trustees were from top to bottom as follows: Mr. Shew. Mr. Gordon. and Mr. Diffen- darfer. These are the fellows you hardly ever got to know. They acted like a catalyst in a chemical reaction. They co-ordinated the people of the community with the faculty to create the best possible harmony. The trustees were not only responsible for the hiring of school personnel, but they also ordered school supplies and worked with the county superintendent of schools to co- ordinate the school program. K Mr. Shew served as trustee of Smith Township for the first part of our school year. He was suc- ceeded on January 1. by Mr. Gordon. Mr. Diffen- darfer was the trustee representing the Green Township students that attended our school. .-agp, f 12' Z 6 'Wi What can the Senior Sponsors Mr Hoover Mrs Senior demerit list mavbe We hope not because we know the Seniors nexer do anxthing to earn demcrits Do they' All that Here we see the tvuo men who tried to keep the Sophomores quiet in home room Mr Warner and Mr Sell Looks as if thex re haxing a good time doesnt it Mrs Hixelv and Mr Norman led the Juniors see them opening the 51019 for a ballgame crowd I m It all ci fake The Fieshman Clas Sponsoi Vlr Wolfe 'Vlr Scribnei 'Vli Baker and Miss Goller usuallx dont stand in a group talking thex aie kept busx trxing to keep the Fieshmen out of txouble 10 r 4 if , ' , I ,fig ', 7 K gy i 1 ' .X :' -fx x . i nf ' . Janitors These are the two men who are needed by everyone in the school. They not only keep our building clean. but they also help the students when they have per- sonal problems. Our janitors are Dwight and Dallas Parish. l-1 W xy M '1 W 1 w l 'X XQ X R x X Top Siars z ' 'fm It was way back in 1957 that we. the class of '59, started. Because there were more of us little first graders than ever before. another teacher was required to handle us. Out of our original number of 51 uneducated little tots, there now remain 24 of us sophisticated seniors. During our 12 years of attempted education, many of our friends left our class and many others joined. Considering this, it is interesting to note that the number of our beginning class is the same as our graduating class-51. Our first year of high school brought many new members into our class. They came from Busco's suburbs -Green Center and Collins. Since then, they have become some of our most devoted friends and classmates. As most freshmen do. we found our first year of high school something to adjust to. We enjoyed many hilarious experiences as we bowed down to our upperclassmen. But then, after we had finally adjusted to high school. we experienced something new at our school. Our beautiful new school was completed. We moved into our new SENIOR OFFICERS Tom Roberson. What queer looking desks. Look at the size of that gym, IVIy. what a spacious and beauti- ful school. VVe certainly loved our new school: it took such a long time to come to Churubusco. In our junior year we experienced a revolution in the grading of our citizenship. It swept over us like the Black Plague, Gloom and grief were everywhere. What was this great force that tor- mented us? Nothing else but the demerit system. It was rumored that in the first several weeks of this new system an adding machine was necessary to figure up all the demerits. But we soon learn- ed to live with it. and we managed to get our class average up to about a Our junior year also brought with it some changes and the prom to plan. We worked very hard at these, and the results were great. Our junior store hit a new high in sales and our prom was a tremendous success. Our senior year was certainly the most busy year of our school life. There was the senior trip to plan, graduation exercises, the class play. magazine sales. fish frys. and tests. tests. tests. Besides all these activities, many of us were plan' ning what we were to do after we graduated. Some of us decided to go on to college. others chose their occupations. and still others had jobs waiting for them. Our class is certainly proud of its members. We have some of the greatest athletes and scholars this school has ever possessed. From our class rise the citizens of tomorrow. We have just passed our first step in establishing our own place in God's world. We thank you, the people of our school. for the teaching and guiding of our minds towards our goals in making these our Moments To Re- member. JAMES L. Some of these mem- bers were from Green Center, and the rest were from Churubusco or Smith Township. As Sophomores at dear old C.H.S., we still had 60 members, but in our Junior year we had lost some old members and gained new ones to have a total of 58. In September, when everyone was talking about his summer vacation. we elected sun- burned and windblown, yet refreshed officers. They were: President. Robert Egolfg Vice President. Walter Gilbertg Secretary. Mary Jane Adams, Treasurer, Sue Poeg Student Council Members, Tom Flowers and Ed Cookg Booster Club Steering Committee, Jim Hodges and Linda Gordon, Store Managers, Linda Bair. Tim Bangs, and Sally Herron, and as witty class reporters, Joan Geiger and Sally Waltemath. In October we did something which was very unusual for a Junior class. We had a very successful Junior class play entitled Meet Me in St. Louis. As November and the basketball season rolled around, we saw Sally Herron and Sue Poe cheering our boys, Walter Gilbert, Willard Gilbert. Dave Hoover CReserve squadl, Jesse Yates, and Bob Egolf tVarsityJ on to many victories. As the weeks and months wore on, we were planning and looking forward to our Junior- Senior Prom and the time when we could claim the title of THE SENIORS OF 603' 7 M ,fy 32' f f ' ' Z 'wi W2 uf? ?74 'v 7f,' ' V 'ff L f ' 6 W f X sw ' N Zig i 1 ' AJ? The class had a very successful year selling Christmas Cards as their money making proj- ect. The Christmas Card committee was Sharon McDaniel. Deanna Marks. John Gil- liom. and Steve Gordon. and they were aided by captains Jim Geiger and Judy Siebern. The committee did a great job and made the project a success. The class chose as their class colors black and white. and they decided to order black sweaters with white letters. U , . - , V- - ,- IC, Basketball To start things off this year the Churu- busco Eagles came back from summer va- cation with the Hoosier Basketball Bug feeling that the Eagles would go places. Since most of the boys had previous ex- perience together, they did as predicted. The Eagles picked up one man who was not with the squad last year. but came in this year to be of help. The Eagles. feeling mighty. took off with a big leap at the first of the season. and did quite well until the Holiday-Tour- ney. The Eagles chalked up a 7 and 2 record winning 7 and losing only to Wolf Lake and Huntertown by 2 and 4 points respectively, The Eagles. feeling proud of their record. were badly disappointed when they dropped two games in the Holi- day-Tournament making their record 7 and 4. The Eagles finished the season with some very well played games. They finally closed the season with one of the best records that has been attained by the Churubusco squad in the past several years. Although the seven seniors on the squad will be missed next season, the four returning lettermen will form the base of a new team. SEASON RECORD CHS 49 e to .c.,. Kathleen Konger, Pat Fromn, Pat Addis, Betty Taul- bee, reporters. The Tattler was published once a month except for January, in which there was none. The staff worked very hard to make each issue better than the last issue. We were especially proud of our Christmas issue. We had light green paper for the covers and we added a few extra feature articles. The next three issues were not as big, but the Tattler for May made up for that. The May issue was devoted almost entirely to the seniors. We hope the Tattler staff for next year will enjoy printing and publishing the Tattler as much as the staff of 1959 did. On these days the high school chorus of 45 members met so that they could blend their yoices in perfect harmony. Of course. the perfect harmony did not come until a con- siderable amount of work had been done by the Various sections. The chorus this year used accompanists at the piano and the or- gan. It was the first year for the organ to be used to any great extent. and it proved helpful to eyeryone. The chorus chose seyeral numbers to memorize so that they could enter the Dis- trict Yocal Contest. lt was the first year that the high school chorus had entered such an eyent. Besides the contest the chorus pre- sented a formal program at Christmas time and another one in the spring. They also plan to provide seyeral yocal numbers for the Baccalaureate seryices in May. TWIRLERS Our tyyirlers for this year yyt-re Deanna Marks. Drum Majorette. and her assistant. Donna Duffee. BAND The Churubusco High School Concert and Marching Band began the 1958-59 season under the leadership of Mr. J. Tide Cook with 44 members. Early in January the band was join- ed by Marianne Fauber to make the member- ship 45 members strong. At the beginning of the year Deanna Marks was chosen to be the drum majorette of the marching band. Deanna led the band in sev- eral local festivities. and when they performed on the gymnasium floor at half time of the varsity games during basketball season. She also led them in the Fall Marching Contest that was held at Columbia City this year. lt was the second year that the band participated in this contest. The band also presented sev- eral programs during the year. one at Christ- mas time and another one in May. After basketball season was over. very serious work began on possible numbers for Tl the District Band Contest which was held at Elkhart. Indiana. in March. The goal for such extensive work and study was the hope that they would receive a superior rating thus being eligible to advance to the State Band Contest at Indianapolis. The band had parti- cipated in this contest on two previous occa- sions and the old saying third time is charm could very well hold true for the band in this attempt. Several members of the band entered the District Solo Contest in Fort Wayne in Feb- ruary in hope of gaining a superior rating So that they could advance to the State Solo Con- test at Indianapolis. The band will lose only three of its members this year by graduation. so it will have enough nucleus left to do a very nice job next year and in several years to come.
